Now I'm having a little success at last, I thought that I would practise what I preach and give a little back. I can't afford a lot yet, but I do think its time to give a little.
Any thoughts on a charity that has a website that is real? You hear of so many that are cons.

I'm partial to the dog charities too. But what are YOU interested in? You can search for charities by name or by type here:

I am quite keen on various animal charities, but this time I thought I'd like to help a fellow human. I'm sure I read somewhere about how it only takes a few £s/$s to help save the sight of children somewhere in the world. Just a little worried about some of the sites out there.

Andy, congratulations on your success & for thinking about giving to others. My first choice would be to give to one of the major charities that do research into curing cancer as it affects a huge amount of families. Cancer Research UK is an excellent one to go for...

        Congratulations on your success.

I wouldn't advice on a specific cause. What I would suggest is that you support something that you are passionate about, an area that you would like to make a diffeence in.

There are many people and charitable causes that would benefit from your support.

I hope you discover your desire to make a difference and change lives in the process.

Lay your worries to rest -- just use the Charity Navigator site I mentioned in my first post. That site ranks and rates charities. You can see exactly how much of your money actually goes to help the cause versus admin costs. You can even see how much the president/head makes each year.

Best way to stay safe is browse that site first.

      Cheers,
      Becky

One of the newer charities is from sports writer Rick Reilly called "Nothing but nets". For a small cost, people in Africa are given mosquito nets. It seems a high percentage of disease is caused by the insects and just a simple net people can use to protect themselves while they sleep can do wonders.

Something else to consider is the "micro loans". The guy that started this won a Nobel...The concept is to lend money to those that really need it so they can start their own business. For example, you may lend someone money in India so she can buy a sewing maching and start a small business in her local town.

The money goes directly to the person, so there's no skimming by governments, etc. I hear that these loans are paid back at a very high rate and that the effect these loans have on local economies are really amazing.
