How many posts have you seen that start and end with "I sent you a PM?"

Wouldn't that be sort of OBVIOUS to the person receiving the PM?

Aren't they likely to see the PM and read it before they hear about it in a thread?

Maybe it is a touch of psychological marketing.

To the rest of the readers of the thread they see, "I sent you a PM".

Instantly they are now interested in the poster of the simply five word phrase, what can this private message say, I want to know!!!!

So the viewers now click the sig link to learn more about the five word poster and what he/she possibly could of said in the PM.

A lot of the time it's also done as a way to carefully slide by the no advertising rule. If you post saying "I sent you a PM." then anyone reading will know that you have a solution to the question or a product that covers the topic. This allows them to put their name out there without actually advertising.

    That is a valid point!

But it does serve a couple of purposes:

1 - It lets others who are participating in the thread know that some of the dialog has been taken offline.

2 - Many people get a lot pf PM's and don't necessarily go and read them right away. This alerts them that one of their PM's is regarding their thread.

3 - If you uncheck the "Show New Private Message Notification Pop-up" option in your user control panel you won't be notified about every PM.

There is also the possibility that the person posting doesn't know how often the other person checks their inbox. So, by mentioning they sent a PM, it alerts the recipient to check their inbox.

Plus, sometimes the original poster asks people to "post here or send me a PM".

Believe it or not, not everybody here is trying to pad their post count or saying "I sent you a PM" for nefarious reasons.

    All the best,

Most likely yes, but not necessarily. There used to be pop ups when you got PM's, but not anymore. Plus I do not get emails when I get PM's, so I have actually gotten PM's and it be a month before I realize it. So I've to train myself to look up there every now and then, or I'll miss any PM's. However it's different for someone selling a WSO, they should check often to see if they have new PM's cause ppl will have questions.

I can see how it's necessary on the WSO section.

A potential buyer may ask a question that requires an individual answer, so the seller will PM. They will also announce they have sent a PM so it won't look like the potential buyer was simply ignored.
