Need Linux Advice!
To all you Linux guys and gals, im in need of some help.
My PC is pretty old-ish. But I keep it clean and clutter free and it still works faster than most peoples PCs that are pretty new.
Ive got 2.2Ghz AMD, 512mb ram, ATI 9550 256mb, 400GB IDE.
Now I run everything I need to, photoshop, ms office, winamp, dreamweaver etc, Everything runs fine MOST of the time but now and then I get a bit of lag and the computer has a fit.
So then I realised all i basically use my PC for is basic tasks really so I thought id give Linux a try since every I do has Linux alternatives anyway and for the few that dont, theres always Wine or VMware.
So I installed Ubuntu 10.04.....and it seems to be laggy. Like if I try to open a txt file, it takes like 1 second where as on xp its instant (I know it sounds like im moaning about nothing but its really noticeable and doesn't make you feel good when its got to take some time to open something simple)
Sometimes just open a few folders its not instant like it should be.
After a bit of reading apparently its because of my graphics card being ATI and now being a "legacy" card, there's no official drivers for it and the open source drivers arnt really up to the standard they need to be.
I tried ATIs legacy drivers but I wont install because the kernel wont support them?
So I was told to try Opensuse because they have better support, but its the same thing.
So I was wondering what other things I could try?, I saw people saying about using an older version of a kernel? or Ubuntu that would allow the legacy drivers to be installed? but I dont know which ones or what one or anything really....
Its not like its slow and doesn't work or crashes like some people have said about old ATI cards but its just not "snappy" like it should be where as XP is (most of the time)
So if you could give me any pointers of advice that would be great, thanks everyone
