Quit drinking water with fluoride in it, Gareth - and cut down on the alcohol - both will result in weight problems and beer will actually concentrate in the gut area.

Exercise - do twists. If you have a machine with a disc you stand on and bars like bike handle bars to grip while you twist just the lower half of your body - that's the machine you want. Careful the first few times cause you can over do it real easy. A few minutes will make it hurt to stand up the next day - once you are used to it, fire it up. You will lose inches real fast.
If you don't have one of those machines available, take something like a broom handle and put it behind your head across your shoulders then hang on to it. Keep your hips straight and twist from the waist up - back and forth from left to right and just keep it going for several minutes a day - once it stops hurting the next day, gear it up.

You just need to lose weight. Doing situps or any other exercise for your stomach isn't going to burn the fat in one specific area. You should know that gareth. What is your body fat percentage?

Are you sure about that? I saw your photo and I know how it is to have that extra neck stuff. I used to weigh 250 about 15 years ago.

Get Covert Bailey's book "Smart Exercise". It works.

I used to sell exercise equipment on straight commission, no draw.
We had a 30 day return policy.

So, I was not about to kick back my commissions.
I studied his books and taught the customers and had astonishingly low returns.
    Because the buyers got results.

Get a heart rate monitor, read his book, exercise as he suggests.
Key is to burn stored fat NOT sugar. Proper heart rate is the key.
It is a % of your maximum based upon your age.

Another way is if you are lazy and prefer not to exercise,Raw Food Diet.

Works like a charm and you will have insane amounts of energy AND it will reduce certain emotions like frustration and anger.(X might argue vehemently about that)

Raw Food niche is a good one to be in as it is growing.

Or if you are into sweating hard research "Kettlebells" also, a growing niche.

Pavel Tsatsouline is one name, Maxwell,Cotter(sic?) are others
    Search Renegade training too.

Heysal is right on too, get off the chemicals.
Beer drinkers also sometimes have enlarged livers from long term over consumption of the mead which causes protruding waists.
    Impacted/clogged pipes too.

Easy peasy too is to just add a moderate more amount of movement to your day. Use stairs, take fido for longer walk, park the car further from the store.

Good luck and take a before and after picture to share with us.

I agree with TimPhelan. You can't resort to crunches alone. Like I always hear, "There's no such thing as spot reducing." In other words, fat loss is a holistic process. You have to work on your entire body to see results.

Gareth, I understand that you want to lose the fat without losing your muscle mass -- wouldn't regular swimming do the trick? Those swimmers competing in the Beijing olympics had good muscle mass and not a gram of fat on them.

      Just a thought....

    Gareth,

First, let me say I'm fat, but I also used to work out quite heavily and have a powerlifting background, so I have a lot of experience with the goal of losing weight and keeping muscle... I just haven't done it in a while.

Here's the answer - carb manipulation. Keep your protein high and gradually lower your carbs. Don't go zero carbs, that's crazy and dangerous. Eat enough high-quality carbs to fuel your workouts and your body for the day, but that's it.

In my glory days of lifting, I used to weigh as high as 280 pounds and cut back to 220 pounds and sometimes even GAIN strength in the process. I'd eat 6 meals a day (small ones) with only 1 serving of high quality carbs - small baked potato, pasta, oat meal, rice, yams, etc. My last 2 meals would have very little complex carbs, instead they'd have a salad or fruit.

Standard disclaimer: The information above is just for informational purposes only. I'm not a Doctor or a nutritionist. Please consult a professional before starting any weight loss program.

Michael you left out of the disclaimer "nor do I play a doctor on TV"

Go on a Raw Food diet and the fat melts off.
(Probably not gunna happen with Gareth though)
Like Michael said several meals a day helps too.

Yeah this is one problem for me - I'm a busy guy and often I'll have a couple of smaller meals but at some stage during the day I sometimes have a gut busting feast just to meet my daily calories.

But yeah i need to get a bit more pedantic about the nutrition. I'm 40 now so I'm paranoid about heart disease.

My body weight is stable around 220/230 for several years. I do respond quickly to running (for burning fat) but I get over trained and get sick like colds.

The HIIT is good I'll persist with that and try spread my calories throughout the day.

What time frame are you suggesting for adjusting carb levels ?

Any body composition change I make I want to be permanent.

OK Gareth, don't blame running or over training for any colds. I think maybe you just don't like this kind of exercise. You can get to like it though you know. I like lifting also. It's a great feeling. But you just answered your own question here. Just start running. Running doesn't cause colds and you will lose weight.

Running itself won't cause colds, but excessive running combined with heavy weightlifting can break the body down to the point of over-training, which will severely diminish the immune system's ability to fight off illness, like colds and flu. This is a common problem. That's why training and running are usually ramped up over time.

Gareth - I understand what you're saying - you want the weight loss to be permanent. knowing this, I should just exit the conversation right now. I'm obviously not a life long weight loss expert. Look at me. I need to lose weight!

I can just tell you what I've done in the past to lose weight - lower my carb intake. That worked every time. Why am I fat today? Simple. I like carbs too much to say goodbye to them permanently. lol

Ok Michael my friend. I know what your saying, but Gareth only needs to run perhaps 20 to 30 minutes 4 or 5 times a week. That shouldn't cause over training according to what Gareth already does. If he is worried about colds, there's ways to keep germs away.

BTW, I love carbs also. I used to buy a six pack of bagels and they would be gone in a few hours. That's why I don't buy them anymore. Rarely anyways. I use my willpower when I am shopping, because when I am home you might as well forget it.

Gareth, weight lifting and bodyweight exercises only make your muscles stronger, they do nothing for the fat.

To shead the fat you need to be doing things like running, cycling, swimming, skipping etc. make yourself sweat. Trust me i know.

If want to super speed the results then change your diet - the simplest easiest way to do this is to only eat: Meat (without the fat), Fish, Fresh Fruit, Fresh Veg.

If you enjoy working out in the gym or at home or whatever then the best way to shead fat is to do CIRCUIT TRAINGIING - look it up.

If you either do CIRCUIT TRAINING workouts on Mon, Wed, Fri OR You go for Runs/Cycles/Rowing/Swimming on Mon, Weds, Thurs then i can assure you that you will lose that weight in no time!

If you need any more help PM me. I am an expert in fitness.

Follow the Mediterranean Diet. See how to lose weight at "The mediterranean diet weight loss plan" and do some exercise. Try to do every second morning, at the bed, as many legs flexions as you can. I removed tmy belly in 2 months. Now I reach 350 flexions (leaned on my back with my arms under my head).

I haven't eaten dead animals in 15 years. Most of my
    friends my age get a gut - but I don't have one. I can't
say it's not good genes - BUT, my mom is heavy, my
    dad isn't.

If you can discipline yourself to not be ruled by the
pleasure of eating you can easily eat food which is
healthier for you but doesn't taste like the comfort
food that made you fat. People are creatures of habit
and under stress turn to the familiar comforting foods
    of childhood.

Also - exercise obviously. A distended gut is sometimes
caused by weak abdomen muscles getting stretched out
by a consistently overstuffed stomach and GI tract. Isolating
the stomach muscles using a Yogic technique called
Udiyanna Banda can be used to correct the condition. Seek
    a competent teacher for this.

Also yogic Sun Salutations and Hindu "pushups" are beneficial
to this abdomen. Backbends lengthen and tone the trunk.
    Twists do so as well.

Thats a funny title my stomach is fat

I think we all have some lard around the stomach.

Heres a basic fact, you cant spot reduce fat

You need to burn more calories than what you take in

Just calculate your bmr or base metabolic rate and eat less than that

People dont realize you can lose weight eating donuts and ho hos, just take in less calories.

The key is feeling good, so eat less calories with balance

    55% Carbs
    35% Proteins
    15% Fats

Eat 6 meals per day every 3 hours

Taper your meals and eat bigger breakfast and less at last meal

Seriosly Garath read up and get into CIRCUIT TRAINING - its how Bruce Lee got such defined muscles, its what Boxers do to get strong and keep the fat off, it works!

Circuit Training in the gym could mean for example:

10x Bench Press ---> IMEDIATLY RUN TO THE LEG PRESS MACHINE ---> 20x Leg Press ---> IMEFIATLY RUN TO THE BICEP CURL MACHINE ---> 8x Bicep Curls ---> IMMEDIATLY RUN TO THE PULLY MACHINE ---> 15x Shoulder Pulling Exercises.

The idea is you go from one exercise to another as quickly as possable, no rest, after you complete 1 full circuit you may have a 2 minute break ---> then you do the circuit again. Do this 3x.

Circuit Training would be the single most effective method for you to lose that fat and get stronger at the same time.

Please look it up - its a winner.

I don't know about that carbs, fat, protein %

Everyone has their unique metabolic type.

Look into metabolic typing and find out what ratios and specific foods are the best for you.

You might be surprised that you may lose fat by eating more fat, good fats like pure olive oil, omegas etc.

Yes I may see a sports nutritionist perhaps.

Unfortunately running does make me over trained because I lift weights pretty hard out. I usually use more weight than everybody else at the gym.

So running screws with my recuperation.

When I was a teen many of my buddies became forestry workers (lumberjacks) They were the fittest *******s I've ever known - even fitter than the army guys.

I tried forestry work once. They would hook a ladder around a tree at full arms length over head. Haul themselves up then stand on the top rung and reach up full extension with loppers.

So they would start lopping from like 25-30 feet up the tree and cut all the way down by hand. Then they would haul the ladder through bush to the next tree on and on.

I swear i did this once and my heart was palpitating at full speed all day. I had sweat hosing out of every inch of me.

I managed 40 trees and was ****ed. Their top guy could do 160 trees a day as his record.

My buddy who was a bit fat when he wasnt working was lean and had a resting pulse of 40 bpm when he was doing forestry.

Shit man and then those guys used to smoke pot and drink all night - they were only young though.
