A little request for the forum

It would be nice if there was an indicator on the posting page that indicates if the thread is still there. One BAD thread, that I would have deleted or edited if I could, was up, and I responded in a way that might help through INFORMATION. But I guess paul didn't like it either, and deleted the thread before I could even add my post. 8-(

BTW I wrote this in a vague manner INTENTIONALY, to avoid discussion on THAT subject.

    The thread might have been there when you clicked to reply to it.

    Had it happen to me yesterday when I went to report a thread. By the time I finished typing my "report" and hit "Send Report", the thread had already been deleted.

    Short of having some sort of status bar that checks for the existence of the thread every 2 seconds while you are typing your reply (which would consume a lot of system resources for very little benefit), I don't think there is much that could be done.

      Right on all counts, but maybe every 15 seconds or something,,,

    It's happened to me three or four times. Click post and get the invalid thread message. Since it happens while creating a post there isn't much you can do except chalk it up to bad timing.

      Yeah, I know. It's frustrating when you open up a thread to reply, type in
      this whole long response, click submit reply, and it's gone.

      This is why, if I reply to a thread that I think has a chance of being deep
      sixed, I either keep my response short OR I do so knowing that I might
      be wasting my time.

      As Dan said, there's really no way of preventing this short of sucking
      the system resources dry...if it's even possible.

        Steve,

        In addition to the other comments made, I'd appreciate it if you'd keep in mind that I am not the only moderator around here. If the right combination of members reports a thread, it's just as "gone" for your reply as if one of the mods nukes it. That said, consider Dan's note about resource usage.

        I'd also suggest that your concept of "vague" and mine are very different. This silliness of hinting at political issues is just as bad as the more direct conversation of said topics. Possibly worse, as it's annoying on top of tending to encourage others to get into the politics.

        If it was up to me, "ICSM" and "ICSSMM" would both be replaced automatically by "Steve's at it again. Nuke this post."

          The joke's on YOU paul! The thread in question dealt in NO way with politics! Outside of maybe referencing some bills that passed YEARS or DECADES ago that maybe allowed it to happen, it couldn't have been stretched to be political! BTW had I posted, MINE would have likely been the first response.

          But HEY, I did say it was VAGUE though!

              Well, if you look hard enough, you could make a political statement out of a stop sign on a corner. It discussed NO BILLS, NO LAWS(My response covered one for consumers, VAGUELY), NO POLITICIANS, NO DEBATES, NO NAMES, etc.... The PARTIAL statement you quoted was basically one that meant I would have to go back years or decades to point to bills that could have dealt with the PERSONAL FINANCIAL subject at hand. That would have been senseless though, and I didn't do it.

              The most political statement was one where I said that for one item it might have been worth taking it to court(Small claims or civil) since they earlier judged it to be illegal, and might again.

              But the thread was deleted before my post, and the OP didn't even speak of laws.

              If you spend a lot of time crafting a brilliant reply to a thread you know has gone off track - you just wasted a few minutes. Not a crisis but perhaps a lesson that it's better to just report such a thread instead of trying to correct it or argue the point.

                I would have deleted it because I don't believe in such posts that are USUALLY scams! But SOME people here will gladly BUY into it, LITERALLY.

        Heck, the thread that I was trying to report last night that got nuked before I hit "Send Report" was a thread I was participating in.

          Perhaps you might take a lesson from my response. Said instruction being that you've done this particular routine often enough that it's become a trademark for a specific type of comment.

          A few of the more senior people here seem incapable of keeping that stuff out, and some tend to make their references just vague enough to get others wondering. And, if I don't delete the stuff, it escalates.

          I'm getting tired of wasting my time on this. You and Sal and Tim and a few others are not all that many hints or partisan side comments away from me going back to the "No current events" policy. Which would suck, given how useful and instructional some of those threads have been.

          I'd much rather spend that time cleaning out more of the outright scammers and TOS busters. The problem with that is, you folks do more damage to the reputation of this forum among new members when you get into that crap than the link spammers do.

          There's your rope, buys and girls. You choose: Ladder or noose?

    ICSSMM - (so much more)

    Lately, since I told Paul I would try to stay out of controversial threads, sometimes I just can't control myself and I will hammer out a reply to something that is potentially in a "gray area" -

    Then I read it objectively.

    If there is any doubt, I hit the back arrow and blow it away.

    I said my piece, vented, snarked, etc. = I got it off my chest

    ... but no harm done since nobody else saw it.

    People might think there is a kinder, gentler me, and doing this does make me feel that way.

    ... only the shadow knows.
