What does this have to do with anything?

What does being an Aquarius have to do with me/What does your birthdate have to do with you? Would I have a different personality if I was born in a different month/sign? Does it make sense that someone is destined to have certain traits and personalities because of when they were born?

I'm a Taurus, but I don't believe in any of that bullshit. However, some star gazers might say spoken like a true Taurus.

Actually psychology has its roots in astrology. Of course astrology has it's roots in astronomy - and you can't deny there are planets and stars up there.

As someone who is interested in psychology I have referred to astrology for decades now. I would say it is spot on when it comes to personality.

However you can't look at it simplistically, as there are several aspects in a person's chart other than the day they were born - these various alignments can completely negate or enhance traits that would otherwise be associated.

Used for BS 'fortune telling' and missued by charlatans, it's too bad so many people are now ignorant about it.

I am a Christian, born under the sun sign of Cancer (the Moon), with Cancer rising and a full moon in Capricorn (Saturn).

...and yes I read Linda Goldman - just for the hell of it.

Well when it comes to astrology and the zodiac, I am not even on level 1. I'm a totally clueless level 0. I have no idea who Linda is and I know there are stars and planets up there but I have no idea what they have to do with anything. Also when I read something like saturn is here or venus is there I have no clue what it means. And I think horoscopes are pure BS.

But I read about the Aquarius personality and it's pretty accurate for me. So is that just a coincidence or are all Aquarians the same and all people born under the same star basically the same? What if I was born a month later, would I have a complete different personality just cause I was born later? What about genetics and nurture or lack thereof? Which is stronger, the sign you were born under or genetics or environment?

No, it's not a coincidence. And no, Aquarians are not all the same. Astrology is a lot more complex than that. Aquarius is your sun sign because the Sun was in Aquarius when you were born. But there are many other factors to consider. There's the moon, ascendent, all of the planets, and more.

I don't know the date you were born, but there is a good chance that if you were born a month later there would be something fishy about you.

Horoscopes have been disproven. They rely on cold reading technniques, and other psychological factors come into play. First, people read into them based on their own lives and experiences. Second, they remember the "hits" and forget about the "misses".

I would say on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being horoscopes having complete control of our lives, that they rank a 0. I was going to say a negative number, but there are people who choose to be guided by them, so that brought the number up by default.

They are not nonsense, but just basic psychology that leads people to believe them.

I did my own (admittedly unscientific) test several times. Over the years I have asked people who I knew read their horoscope if I could read theirs out loud to them. After they agreed, I'd ask what sign they are. Then, I would read the horoscope to them and ask how accurate it was. Without fail, their eyes would light up and they would comment that it was so accurate it was almost spooky. You know what I did then? I pointed to the horoscope - then their facial expression would change when they realized I was pointing to a sign that was not theirs.

The Amazing Randi has debunked them very effectively, the Skeptical Inquirer has also proven they are false, and other studies have been done. EVERY scientific study, and I mean double blind with scientific controls, has proven they are nothing more than glorified BS.

But, if someone wants to read a horoscope, who am I to stop them?

    ~Michael

p.s. That's my take on it anyway.

      Michael,

That was a dirty, rotten trick. You should have been a Taurus!

I'm a scorpio (believer or not - you gotta have expected that one). I have followed astrology little but have read books about my own sign. When it comes to moons and rising, descending, etc. I am completely clueless. I know the daily horoscopes in the newspaper are trash. But I did have my horoscope done once by a guy from India - and it was absolutely uncanny. As I said, I have read some books on my sign and all in all they seem to fit me fairly well.
The horoscope I had done for me made my blood run cold when I read it. How this thing was put together I have no clue, but it seems to me that maybe there is something to it at the expert level. I believe that the charts are graphed according to certain energy alignments so there might be something to it that science has yet to explain. I know that dowsing was laughed at once upon not too long ago - yet major corporations employ dowsers to this day to find minerals, water, etc. Roosevelt was a dowser.
Using crystals for healing was also considered witchery, but come to find out some of the minerals contained in the crystals and the frequency of the vibrations particular to each can actually have therapeutic benefit. So why not astrology? I don't live by it, and am not all that curious about it -- but I don't think anything can be ruled out just because we don't understand it completely and in depth.

Now what I wonder about is the star in the middle of my left palm. Seems like that would be a good thing - anyone know anything about that?

Ah, Here is something I have to disagree with you on Michael.
Horoscopes are not based on cold reading. Of course, being a corpio I can see how you feel that way
After all, A great number of Scorpio's may be found in the helping professions ... because they are so keyed in to people's pain and the struggle of those trapped in their own darkness. But laziness and weakness Scorpio will not abide. ... What he fails to realise is that people are made differently, and not everyone has his capacity for ruthless self-discipline.

I believe that the way a person is raised and the environment they are brought up in has a lot to do with their personality. And what does it mean if the sun is in aquarius or leo or sagittarius or any other sign? How does the sun go into aquarius?

HeySal, that star must mean you are special. What else can it mean?

Thanks Kim - I am moving right now (Escape from NY part 2). In fact this is my last post before I close down and load up. Gonna stop at my dads for a tad and if he has a scanner I will do that.

Until then - it is between my head and life line - large. It is 6 radials - two intersect the head line in a triangle and go beyond it. One that goes through
the headline goes the other direction from the center and hits the lifeline, and goes through it. The prong that sits to the left (toward the wishbone part of the head and life line) splits just a tad out from the center (making a 7th radial) and hits the headline forming another triangle.

I will remember your offer and the next time I can get where there is a scanner I will send you a scan - but until then, if you have any guesses, please do so.

If X=Y, then its not XY, its X or Y, which means that if you are born somewhere at some time, it dosent mean you become like X because of that, but it does greatly effect your future. I would rather ask: is there something like free will? Do I make choices, or does it only feel and look that way?

After thinking about it for 20 years, I would say, I have a will, but its not free...

      My Sign?

      STOP!

      (laugh)

Seriously though, I am an Aquarius too.

I just learned recently, that only Aquarius is compatible with all signs in Zodiak.

Also, Aquarius is the only sign, better off with their own kind...another Aquarius?

      Odd.

If it is any consolation we are supposed to be in the Age of Aquarius (insert obvious song)

PS; In the Chinese Zodiak I am horse and should never marry a rat.
