Hey, I just saw this question posted on another forum and I thought, "wow! what a great idea."

So, I thought I'd copy the question here and see if my fellow warriors know if anything like this exists.

I've got a few dozen DVDs with backups of various courses and music and stuff I've collected and archived over the years.

They might as well be in the trash because there's no easy way for me to see what's on them or search them.

Maybe I remember I have a "My Hero" mp4 episode one one of those DVDs. No way I'm going to insert 30+ DVDs to look at the listing to figure out which one it's on.

And, some of them have dozens of files, so writing them on the front of the DVD is not practical, either.

So, does anyone know of a disk cataloging application that does this...

  • I insert a disk
  • It reads and indexes the contents
  • I give the disk a name or number (and label the disk with that name/number)
  • Repeat for all disks
  • Any time, I can open the catalog app and search for a file
  • It will tell me what disk it's on
  • Maybe even take me to that file when I insert the disk.
Is there an app like that?

They exist! I wrote one once and that was BEFORE the IBM PC! Still, I can't claim to be the first OR last!

TODAY though, you almost wonder why? I mean you could put SO much on a disk, MAN!

When I did it, the source AND target were FLOPPIES!

BTW regarding name and number, I think the apple had something similar but on the pc:

Volume in drive C has no label.
    Volume Serial Number is 88E1-2F2E
