How do you do this without using photoshop

We see images like this on forums often and would like to try out the simplest way of doing this. The sample image is shown below (image picture varies, so ignore that):

So please let us know (if you know done this personally) the exact method of doing this with a black background and writing text without using photoshop.

You DO NOT need a fancy web application to emulate this style -- it's just a photo with a border and some simple text below it.

You could use virtually ANY photo editing software (even free programs like GIMP, etc.) to create this same effect. The advantage of doing it on your desktop is that you have complete control over the end result -- including size, color, etc.

ROFL that was a good one!

You can use gimp (free) but making the borders etc takes some learning. I like this motivator, it's pretty awesome, thanks for sharing!
