Not a cry for help... Just a plea.

Before I continue to write this post, may I point out something. This isent a cry for help or a sob story! These are desperate times for everyone as you can all appreciate and I am merely reaching to fellow members for help.

Today I feel the lowest I have felt in a long time, as a matter of fact you could say that I have reached the pits. I realized this morning that I would not be able to get my daughter a birthday present as I have no money coming in whatsoever! I feel like such a failiure that I am not able to provide something as simple as a birthday present to my own daughter.

That's why I decided to reach out. Not for charity, for work! I am offering my skills in video production, music production, web and graphic design. Do you need a YouTube channel setup with video's to suite? Do you need a piece of instrumental music custom made for your Video or Podcast presentations? Anything at all that can make me some money in time for my daughters birthday so I can feel less of a looser!

All help or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thank's for your time.

You could make a video for her telling her how much you love her, or compose a piece of music especially for her. Your time spent on her is more valuable than money, but I think that I can find you some work, I'll pm you.

I am very sad to hear about your situation but i can not help you, because i have my own video editor i use.

But i think you should post you skills on to some freelancing pages and offer small gigs in zeerk and Fiverr, they maynot bring in Huge amount of cash, but they should bring in some money atleast 100$ a month atleast.
My video maker got a gig offering him 50$ to compose a 1 min video, and that is not a lot of work.

And for your daughter i think the BEST present would You. spend the day with her.

If you think a material item is the best present for your 4 year old, your values are misplaced and your going to teach your daughter misplaced values.

This may sound harsh, but its the truth.

Some time ago when I had a hard year I gave my Grandson an Indian hatchet head. I had found it myself as a child digging in a field with my Grandfather.

I gave it to him as a birthday gift with the story of how it was found and what Indian tribe lived in the area, etc. In included a picture of myself as a child with my Grandfather and a picture of the farm where we lived.

The toys received that year are long ago discarded - but that Indian hatchet is a prized possession. The story and pictures are framed and hung on his wall.

If a toy is what you want, I hope you can get it. If not, give your daughter your time and a piece of family history she can treasure.

well i talk from a been there perspective, there is no secret we went through years of no money and i was exactly where you are now, I had to do some quick leg work but when my daughter was about the same age, i had your same problem, but i managed to get a few $ together and i purchased 4 or 5 birthday cards and made my daughter a present / all up it was probably under 10$.

I was / am good at art and i made a paper tole picture ( pictures cut out and layered on each other then framed) / I made this by hand and gave it to my daughter for her birthday / it still carries my with love and the date + some kisses and hugs from dad hand written on the back.

Why tell you this story / well, there were also the good years where i spend hundreds on crap, and guess what / all of those dolls are lost broken or missing and every other thing. But this present my daughter still has and treasures.

Here are the pictures below ( i had to round them up today as a midnight fling into her room would have been wrong ) / but you can see it takes pride of place and will probably for the rest of her life / well after I am gone.

a little hard to see but the ribbons and balloon's are are all multi layered

I hope this can help you in some way and gives you some ideas from those that have walked in your shoes.

  • Hey guys. I thought I would give you all an update on everything. First off I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to all the fellow Warriors that helped me through this difficult period both with your suggestions and comments and with the work you were able to give me. The work that came through as a result of this thread was greatly appreciated and was of great help to my cause!

To KimW - While your input on this subject is also greatly appreciated I find you to be exactly what you describe yourself in your signature, a "cranky old man." Yes you are right, there are more important things to life than material objects which she receives in abundance, but to honestly tell me that I am teaching my daughter "misplaced values" by buying her a present or two on her fourth birthday, you my friend, and I say this with the utmost respect to you, are SERIOUSLY warped!

Oh come on Thomas - warped? For asking advice?

Even if it's meaningless to you, it was obviously important to him. And he obviously didn't catch the threads about Kims condition.

But warped? I doubt even Kim would have called it warped.

Oh come on Mike, asking for advice? Really? It looks more like it was begging for work. Did you even read the thread?

It is kind of hard to miss all the threads from Bev's cancer to Kim's kidney failure to Brit's homelessness.

There are more important things in life besides buying a birthday gift. That was what Kim was trying to say and he was called warp for that line of thinking.

Hell, there was a few times I was almost homeless and never asked anyone for help. I dug in and got the money each and every time.

          Asking for advice?

I sure as hell wouldn't come to a forum and beg for someone to give me work just to buy a birthday gift.

I would bet that the OP could have cut something out of their life for an extra $20 to buy a gift.

Asking for advice is one thing but that wasn't what this thread was about.

So from where I sit you were calling him warped for asking help.

I'm a simple guy Thomas. I don't infer what you MIGHT have been commenting on - only what you WERE commenting on.

I still say calling him "warped" for that is harsh. The man just wanted to get together a few bucks for a birthday gift. That doesn't mean he doesn't get that there are people worse off then he is. And it doesn't mean he's "warped" for asking for help.

Every day on this forum we admonish people for looking for handouts - we tell them to work for it...there must be some skill they can offer. This is what this person did.

Unless we have a different definition of warped...

            Mike

Edit: Thomas, I have been reading your posts for quite a while (although I don't remember you ever posting in the OT section) and I think you're a stand-up guy with integrity. I am also a customer (Tiger Software) and always think of you as an ethical business person.

What we have here is a simple difference of opinion. We're both entitled. And I have no desire for this to escalate into anything more than that. No hard feelings on my end

Yet you infer the person was asking for advice instead of asking for work like it clearly states.

Yeah, I think begging on a forum for a birthday gift is warped. He isn't working but begging for work unlike the rest of us.

I didn't beg for work when I was almost homeless. I got the money myself.

The OP could stop smoking, drinking, stop buying cola, don't eat out, sell something he has on ebay, etc... There is something they could cut out to get that birthday gift.

Honestly, it is all about how this person feels. He doesn't want to feel a loser. He already stated he has it better than a lot of people.

No harm, no foul. I never thought this would escalate. I like you Mike and I don't have any hard feelings over a disagreement. Thanks for the kind words. From your posts, I think you're a stand up guy as well.

                Hi Thomas,

Actually I mis-spoke. I said advice by mistake

I didn't ask for handouts either. I came from a background where we constantly had homelessness hanging over our heads. And as a young father we nearly lost our house twice. This was pre-internet for me. Spent many winter days with no heat...

But I still have no issue with someone coming here asking for work. Better than commiting a crime. And I still don't think its warped

                Ah well. Opinions, eh?

      Thomas and Mike,

For me the above statement stood out as the weirdest in the OP's converstation with Kim. The juxtaposition of that statement with this statement " I feel like such a failiure that I am not able to provide something as simple as a birthday present to my own daughter" makes this whole thread seem a bit bizzare.

Perhaps the lesson here is to use the proper channels for soliciting work from others instead of pulling out the pity card and tying your need for work to a single instance that only tends to confuse others.

I hope the OP does get the work needed, and I hope others find a lesson in how to package their requests for work. The current model used here has a basic flaw. That flaw allows for confusing commerce with charity on the part of others.

Interestingly, when I first read his post I intended to respond with that very suggestion. But damn, it's been crazy busy these days and I got side-tracked and never did.

Back in 2003 I was suddenly out of a job with a wife 8 months pregnant. I was a member of the WF, but didn't feel comfortable posting my need for work. I just looked for opportunities to offer my services and it was a great supplement until I was able to secure full time employment.

Hopefully those days are LONG behind me, never to return...

  • OK. First and foremost!

I was unaware of Kim's current medical condition and my thoughts and prairs go out to Kim and his family.

To those of you who considered my post begging. Well maybe you are right, but it's not like I was sticking my hands out to you and expecting you to give money! I earnt the money that came from the generous job offerings from fantastic Warrior members and I worked hard! I know there are people in considerably worse situations other than myself, but atleast I took the initative to put something into action as opposed to sitting back! If you call that begging, then I am guilty as charged!

And for your information Thomas... I don't drink, smoke, eat out at fancy establishments or anything else you decided to conjur up with that vivid imagination of yours. I worked to get to where I wanted to be, selling my skills in order to make money! Wouldent you consider that taking action!? I originally wrote this post with no intentions what so ever of playing the guilt trip on ANY of you! But somehow this is what I have been protrayed as doing. I just wonder, WHAT IF THE SHOE WAS ON THE OTHER FOOT???

No need to wonder about what I would do.

Actually, if you have read my posts, you would have seen the part of almost being homeless. Far worst than not affording a birthday gift. I never asked for help but took care of it myself.

So, I am very doubtful I couldn't come up with birthday money on my own. If I couldn't get the money then I would make a gift or do something special with my child like a picnic. Something that shows I love my kid and they are special.

First off, the reports of my demise have been greatly exagerated!

While its true I have just gotten out of the hospital after 4 days in Critical care Unit, and I am in kidney failure, I am not going to leave this body anytime soon. So if you want to take chops at me, feel free.

But I am only reposting in this thread now so the OP can get my message, which was NOT it is bad to give a child a gift, but for the child to get the idea that a birthday celebration is about getting monetary gifts.
I am not going into it anymore.
    Everyone have a nice day.

That is great to know! Now, I can get to convincing you how great Lady Gaga is.

(but I have to convince myself first)
