English is not my first language and I rarely hear this word, but I've heard people say "oh lordy!"

I want to use it in a domain name for a religious web-site.

Is that derogatory?

P.S: I really hope this doesn't fall into the religious (which is NOT allowed in this section) category so please let's not start any confrontations and simply use the poll Thanks guys

It's an old saying that by itself isn't something bad to say. The term "oh, lordy" is used (mainly in the Southern US) "to express surprise or dismay".

Used on a religious site - it might well be seen as derogatory or mocking.

Kay is right. Personally, I don't think it is THAT common, but it is common enough that I've heard it, and it may be nice to know if you are not an American.

I don't think it's used much any more. It was my grandmother's generation that used that term frequently. Back then, though, it would have been bizarrely shocking to say "Oh SH**" or "Oh FU**" as people do today. What I always interpreted it as is an exclamation that allowed the person to make an exclamation without being vulgar about it. I never saw anyone object to it and have heard many staunch Christians use it. It's not an exclamation of disdain for the diety or anger, but rather one that more asks "what the heck is going on this time?" and sometimes used even when the surprise is good, so I don't think it's taboo in any mainstream religious group. You may, however, offend some in fringe Christian groups.

I'm interested, because of the connotation of the exclamation, what your site is about that would make that a relevant and sensical domain name. If the site is about unexpected happenings and how Christians handle them it would be a good name - if it's just religion as you would get at a church it wouldn't really fit the site anyhow.

Yeah, hey sal is right. They have said that "goodbye" came about as a short form of
"GO[O]d Be with YE" The Mavens' Word of the Day So sometimes something may sound religious, or not sound religious, and be the opposite.
