What 3 songs would you use to describe rock and roll?

Okay, let's say you met somebody who had never heard a single rock and roll song in their entire life.

You can only play 3 songs to get them to understand. Which 3 songs would you play?

I understand it would take a lot more than 3 to encompass the entire range of the genre, but you can only choose up to 3. Also, these don't even have to be songs you like, just songs that would help to get the point across.

Rock on!
Michael

Excellent choices! Especially if you wanted to convey the heaviness that can be present in some forms of rock and roll.

I would probably pick T.N.T. by AC/DC, but that's just because I prefer Bon Scott over Brian Johnson, but it's all good.

I'm still thinking about my three.

The GNR song was the toughie for me. I'm not sure I would pick that song now that I have given it more thought. I think I'm going to have to replace it with ONE by Metallica.

They have been around long enough now to be included in this discussion.

I could probably perm any three from hundreds - but I think they'd get the general picture from the following:

          - Eddie Cochran - C'mon Everybody
          - Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar
          - Ramones - Swallow My Pride

This may be one of the hardest questions for anybody who has had as
much exposure to rock and roll as I've had.

In fact, I'd say it's impossible to answer.

What kind of an impression do you want to give the person about rock and
            roll?

            Heavy?
            Pop?
            Meaningful?
            Anthems?
            Biggest impact on the industry?

Rock and roll, as a definition in itself, is so broad that you're talking about
literally thousands of songs in multiple genres.

I could come up with 100 different lists of 3 songs depending on what I'd
want the person to get out of it...even leaving my personal bias out of it.

So, in order to do that, without picking my favorite rock songs, here
are the tunes I would pick for a few of the categories.

            Biggest Impact

Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin
            Hey Jude - Beatles
Rock Around The Clock - Bill Haley & The Comets

            Most Meaningful

            Get Together - Youngbloods
Blowin In The Wind - Bob Dylan
Abraham Martin & John - Dion

            Anthems

            Inagaddadavida - Iron Butterfly
            American Pie - Don McClean
I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home - Grand Funk

Heaviest Rock Songs (without going into underground metal)

            Easy Livin - Uriah Heep
Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
Rock And Roll - Led Zeppelin

I'll think of more tomorrow. My wife wants to call it a night.

If I had to play one band for somebody and say this is pure rock and
roll, I'd probably have to go with Led Zeppelin, even though they're not
my personal favorite. I think, when all is said and done, they have come
to define what rock and roll is all about, at least to my generation.

For those before me, it was Bill Haley.

And I'm sure to those after me, it would be somebody else.

Like I said, almost impossible question to answer.

And the sad part is, at least IMO, the best music ever made in the 60 plus
years of rock and roll was NOT popular.

But that's a whole other can of worms that I won't get into tonight.

            Michael...GREAT idea for a thread.

ACDC's Back in Black is my ultimate rock song! Love the intro, guitar is so crunchy!

I'd also agree wih GNR's Welcome to the Jungle.

Not so sure with Led Zep's.

While Frank's choices would not be my choices, I can appreciate them.
Like Steven, I can't do it.
The one thing I think almost no one will agree with me on is that I think most good music died around the 90s. Oh sure, there might be a few bands that have put out some memoriable stuff, but those groups are in the minority, not the majority.
Most stuff coming out since the 90s and up to today is pablum.
OK folks, hit me with your best shot! ( And if I was listing 3 female singers, Pat would definitely be there, along with Chrissy Hinde. Not sure who I might pick for number 3)

This question would be completely impossible for me to answer if I thought about it, so I'm just going to list the first three that come to mind.

    1. Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
    2. I Put a Spell on You - Creedence Clearwater Revival
    3. The Pusher - Steppenwolf

And what are your three, Michael? I'm guessing the Beatles would be on the list, and really, is any list complete without a Beatles song?

    2. Little Richard - Tutti Fruitti, Long Tall Sally, etc etc

    3. Buddy Holly - Peggy Sue etc

    3. Jerry Lee Lewis - Whole Lotta Shakin' etc

    3. Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced, etc etc etc

I love the answers so far.

So far I think I've come up with some criteria that would get to the essence of rock and roll.

    1. Hits you emotionally.

    2. Questions authority in some way.

    3. Possesses you to move.

Now to figure out which songs do those things.

Like Steven W said above it's virtually impossible to name just 3 songs that cover the entire essence of Rock n Roll.

In the 1950's it may have been possible, but today with so many genres and sub-genres fitting under the RnR banner, the answer could be enough to take up the entire disc space that the WF sits on.

However taking the 3 criteria you listed below, it becomes a little easier (only a little though).

The problem with this is that if asked the same question next week, I may come up with 3 completely different songs

But here goes anyway. The 3 songs that I feel best describe RnR according to the criteria above, and at this point in tiime are (in chronological order):

1 My Generation - The Who

2 Schools Out - Alice Cooper

3 Pretty Vacant - The Sex Pistols

I disagree with #1 and #2. The purest "essence" of rock and roll comes from blues, with the purpose being music to make you dance and stomp your feet and party to forget your blues. The terms "rock" and "roll" are blues terms...

      Therefore:

      1. Any Chuck Berry tune

      2. Any Little Richard tune

      3. Fats Domino - Blueberry Hill

If it doesn't make you want to stomp your feet and have a good time, it ain't rock and roll.

Nothing wrong with your criteria. That's the cool part, you get to choose which three songs you would use.

That being said, while blues is absolutely important to the sound of rock and roll, we also have to give a nod to the country influence as well. Rockabilly had a huge impact on the sound of early rock and roll, at least for artists like Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison (to name a few).

Again, I'm not trying to downplay the influence of the blues, just wanted to be sure to give credit to another part of the equation.

By the way, your choices are awesome!

Here are the 3 I came up with, though I may change them.

Money - Barrett Strong. It has a good rock and roll message, and shows rock and roll's R&B roots.

Anarchy In The UK - Sex Pistols. This one shakes you and wakes you up, letting you know it's time to do something. Though, I have to say this is a toss up with "My Generation".

Hotel California - The Eagles. About being trapped by the rock and roll lifestyle, and it helps show a bit more of the sound variety present in rock and roll.

This is a great thread, but I can see that a lot of folks have a very different interpretation of Rock and Roll from my own one.

There's been talk of Motown, Psychedelia, Bubblegum...

I dunno. I have a hard time even thinking of Pop music as RnR. I mean, I love Abba, but I'd never call them RnR. Nor would I class bands/artists such as Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder or even Bob Dylan as RnR.

Sure, they may have RnR roots or influences, but when I think of quintessential RnR bands, I look at The Rolling Stones, Guns n Roses...and a lot of the Punk/Grunge bands. Stripped down to the basics.

Once you start elaborating or incorporating other musical styles and influences, IMO, you move away from the essence of Rock and Roll and toward a different musical sensibility.

Anyway, for someone who loves just about all musical genres to some extent, it's all good.

So, here's what we have so far. Numbers in parantheses indicate the number of times a song was mentioned. Songs with an * are also on the Rolling Stone magazine list of Top 500 Rock Songs of All Time (However, we're not really looking for the "best", just the most definitive).

    * (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - Rolling Stones (2)

89 songs that could be used to show somebody what rock and roll is all about. You would be hard-pressed to come up with a better list. Yet, at the same time, it doesn't even begin to scratch the surface.

11 more and we'd have an even 100.

Anyway, I'm loving the responses here.

    Rock on!

Pretty much created the whole genre of heavy metal, IMHO.

Gloria - Patti Smith (she changed the landscape of rnr)
If the original version was somewhat risque for its time, Smith's version is downright dirty, but it's an awesome take on the song.

Rocket 88 - Jackie Brenston/Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm (the tune that kicked off the whole damn thing)
Whether or not Rocket 88 was the first rock and roll song is still debated by the "experts", however, it's still a cool song, and ranks as one of the very first.

My personal vote goes to Caldonia by Louis Jordan

You can hear how elements of this "jump blues" from 1946 made its way int 1951's Rocket 88.

      Rock on!

Since a Top 100 was mentioned, IMO no top 100 would be complete without:

    Stranglehold - Ted Nugent
(Don't Fear) The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult
Casey Jones - The Grateful Dead
Sunshine of Your Love - Cream
Funk #49 - The James Gang

...I could go on and on. Maybe we'd better do Top 1000.

    Hi Guys,

This is my first post, so first of all:

Thanks for having me here, this is REALLY a great place with a wealth of information to explore. My only regret is not looking for it sooner...

You guys are bringing back old memories with this.

I didn't see the Arrows "I LOVE ROCK & ROLL" --- a Classic "rock & Roll. may not be in the top 100, but defines Classic Rock (IMO)

YouTube - Arrows, I Love Rock N Roll, Alan Merrill

    * sorry but since I don't have 15 posts yet ...can't post the link...just google "I love rock & roll", if you feel like listening to an oldy...

Lot of years, genres, and sub-genres to only come up with three but here goes.

      1. Chuck Berry--Johnny Be Good
      2. The Guess Who-- American Woman
      3. Jimi Hendrix-- All Along The Watchtower
      4. Rush--Tow Sawyer
      5. Billy Idol--White Wedding
      6. Robert Plant--Big Log

I didn't get it down to three so hopefully six will do. If not pick any three.

Willie & The Hand Jive - Cliff Richard

Long Tall Sally - The Beatles

    Jailhouse Rock - Elvis Presley

Yeah I suppose that's fair , give ode to where it began. But rock n roll has seen a few genres . **** I miss it . I don't even listen to music anymore. 90s boy bands killed it all for me. Its cubs games in my office or talk radio. Got a few discs that collect dust in the changer , but man I'm not kidding ya, the boy bands....oh my goodness ...i'll take nails on a chalkboard , before I listen to another group of whiney men. I'll bet that's the way my mom and pops felt too though when I was cranking up the heavy metal. I suppose they're rock n roll was a wee bit different than mine too.
