I'm guessing this 'Dennis Gaskill' character is a conceptualization from someone's imagination. Who that someone is, is the big question.

I think it may be a better question if you direct it to a specific "thing" like a song "When does a song exist"? "When does a cat exist"?

So I guess the answer is this: It depends on what "something" represents in your question.
