It's interesting how many people don't seem to read?

Just a small tiny rant.

It's really remarkable how many people can't seem to read instructions. Whether it is a FAQ, download link right in the body of an e-mail, business proposal detailing exactly what is required to proceed, and the like. It's like they know what they want to say and want to see, so are completely oblivious to the obvious. They'll ask questions which were just answered, or not send the necessary materials in a proposal when it is clearly outlined exactly what is needed.

Do you get the same thing happening, and if so, what do you do to actually 'get' people to read (& then follow) instructions?

Thanks,

John

I use BOLD or Underline to highlight points people might have missed,

You are right, the majority of people are seeing the obvious without reading the instructions.

Well I clicked them, but not because I didn't read what you wrote. I just wanted to be sure whether or not those were real links. BTW, who is the hottest warrior?

  • Hehe, that's actually pretty funny. and a good example.

Although the red tiny text is something people would "naturally" skip, it does prove a point.

Writing directions for people to follow is a real skill and its a lot of work, especially if there is more than one language involved. From my experience in teaching and training, I can say that most of the time when people give directions a lot of extra information is given in the body language and vocal inflection.

When some people write directions they cannot imagine how anybody could understand anything different than what they wrote. And sometimes what happens is that much of the real meaning to the directions is understood and unstated because it has more to do with what the writer is thinking about while they are writing.

Something similar to this is why legal contracts are so long and complex, and people still go to court over their varying interpretations.

I think it was just last week we had that whole big long thread about the difference between an article and a discussion thread in a forum. People just think differently.

And sometimes, they just don't want to follow the directions, and they just want to see if they can get away with something.

I actually put a big heading first on one of my payment pages which says.

    Please STOP and read this!

It works in majority of cases now.

Dan Rinnert and I have relentlessly played with people who do this in the forum.

I have been testing to see how to increase the ability to get things read, and it boils down to copy writing principles.

Most people scan. So you have two choices:

    1. You can put the most important items into variant fonts, as previously described: different colors, sizes and highlighting such as bold, italic, underline and background colors.

    2. You can drop cues into the sub-heads and variant fonts to create curiosity to get people to dive into the text to figure out what the hell you are talking about.

You beat me to it, only I wasn't going to quote Chris.

@ John - yeah, it happens often enough. A few months ago I had someone reply to my email asking what their registration code is for software they bought, and the registration code was in bold type on the next line below the download link.

          Hi Dennis,

Yes, I've found that especially true for software. I think I've gotten 'close' to have a method that works 100% for registration keys in all cases, but from time to time I still get e-mails asking where the registration code is anyways.

Well you just have to understand that most people are less experienced with computers than the general warriorforum member (obviously). I have made a few tests where I have looked over the shoulder when some people visists my sites for the first time. Sometimes I feel like just shouting out loud when they are clicking on the most illogical places possible. It is simply extremely difficult to understand how visitors behave on your site without massive experience and testing.

I really don't understand why you are having a problem downloading a FAQ. You just click the link to it and the page will open up in your browser. Why is that so hard?

I appreciate your business proposal, but I'm afraid I don't believe you are the estate administrator for Mr. Ritelef Linkswere, so I will have to decline your offer of $15,780,000.

    Matt Morgan,

There is a problem with your links! I DID read everything, and tried to click them to see what would happen. You CLAIMED that meant I didn't read your text, but I DID!

It tested NOTHING but my curiousity. 8-(

What amazes me is that people will skim an OP and not read the conversational lines of the posts then post irrelevant and redundant posts. There seems to be some disability developing that retards people's ability to read.

What the hell were all those dead links about?

I will be honest with you I only read the things that don't require a lot of my time. For me the shorter the better. I prefer to read things with larger font of at least 14 it is easier on the eyes and a variety of colors such as red, blue and black seem to get your readers attention.

Yes, Bill. It is flabbergasting that so many redundant and pointless identical posts show up in a thread. That would definitely stop or slow down if people weren't missing the point of...er.... ignoring the actual conversation line.
