I used to smoke about a pack and a half a day. I quit several years ago and haven't had so much as a puff since then.

    All the best,

I used to smoke, starting in late teen years, but quit after awhile. Actually developed an allergy to it, and it made me sick

Defensive much? I wasn't being judgmental of smokers, but you sure seem to be judgmental about non-smokers.

The OP asked a question and I answered. The post wasn't titled "Smoker's Only", so I thought it was okay to mention I used to smoke, but was able to kick the habit.

Michael I honestly didn't even see that you posted and wasn't that defensive, although reading my post again, I understand it may come across that way.

I'm not trying to attack anyone specifically here, and yes it's a free forum, post as you wish.

I just made an observation as I've seen these smoking posts done many times before.

I just get slightly annoyed at people who like to brag that they don't smoke and try and force their ignorant views on smokers, while most smokers don't bother replying to these kinds of threads, because they have their own life to worry about..

        Anyway carry on....

Unfortunately I do smoke. A pack or so per day depending on my stress level (I have 5 daughters with 1 daughter on the way, so quite high stress levels lol). I have tried numerous times to quite, all to no avail. I even tried chantix and it messed me up pretty bad. I'd rather just smoke and take my chances, I guess.

I use to smoke for more than 20 years. All these years of smoking I've been annoyed by friends and family to quit and it just pushed me further away from quitting. At some point I realized that I stopped enjoying it. Then tried to quit but the habit was there for quite some time until I found those filters. What I am trying to say that everyone have their own breaking point if you will, when you simply know that it's time to quit. I did it more than 8 years ago now and never looked back. So if you trying to help somebody, don't force it. It can't be done by force.

I raised 4 girls, my own daughter and 3 step-daughters so I know your pain (and joy).
In all seriousness smoke a joint or bowl in the evening it will help with the stress and could help you quit cigs.

What's really funny is that I was thinking the opposite thing earlier today. That these threads always seem to attract more smokers.

To be fair, I remember what smoking was like. I wasn't trying to brag, just stating a fact.

But yeah, the smoking posts, in general, tend to irritate me a bit. But that's just the fun of the OT.

I don't know if they force me to do 100 other things, but YEP! At least I am not hurting OTHERS by doing them! BTW there are FAR fewer smokers now than when I was a kid. I FORCED my mother to stop smoking. I kept hiding her cigarettes! My step mother and my FATHER'S doctor forced my FATHER to quit. MY FATHER!!!!!!!!!!! He was a DIE HARD SMOKER!

I used to have to deal with smoke EVERYWHERE, and now it is RARE! I EVEN went to GERMANY and it wasn't as bad THERE as I was told it has been. I even went to DENMARK, where many say they have the BEST cigarettes, and there wasn't much smoking.

So you REALLY think the 60+% of messages here are because smokers aren't coming here?

But YEAH, I travel and am often given only junk food, etc... Everything seems to have aluminum in it. I got addicted to coke, also one of the few commonly available non sugar things I can trust a little. And now the GMO food, etc... Believe me, most of the harmful things that happen aren't because that is what I want.

    Yes; I do smoke.

I've whittled the number down to about 5 per day now, but if I go for a "night out" (drinking), then I'll still get through about 20 in a single night.

I'm ill at the moment (got a virus, it seems), and feel too sick to smoke, so will probably hold off for a couple of days until I feel better.

(I can do that, you see. )

Both of our parents smoked and that totally turned us OFF to smoking. We grew up in the 60's and 70s when smoking was hip and cool. I remember driving home from my Grandparents on Sunday nights in the winter with the car windows rolled up, the heater blasting, and my parents smoking with all four kids in the back seat. I thought I would never get out alive Luckily, we all made it, but my poor old Dad passed away with lung cancer at the age of 77 in 2006. Mom quit a long time ago, and is still with us at 78. Whenever I smell cigarette smoke now, I think of a Casino

I do smoke, and i do enjoy it. by the way i dont think smokers has to be point as criminals just for doing so. I just read in the newspaper that the government is planning to bann the display of cigarettes in the store so they will be hidden and they are trying to force the tobacco companies to produce plain packets.

All because according to them the NHS spend 50 million pounds a year treating illness caused from smoking. But is that any good? i mean since those companies were banned for advertising they earn 1.4 millions pounds more a year (the marketing budget they used to have for it) because they didnt lose any customer.

Im going to keep smoking although i will cut it down, Respect those who doesnt want to live that long

I smoke half a pack to a whole pack a day, depending on my activities. Definitely more on the weekends. I try not to smoke at work because I hate smelling like it. I never smoke in my car or apartment, either. Some rules that help me limit my smoking. I've never tried to out and out quit, though. It feels like my one last indulgence ever since I quit drinking!

Sometimes its weeks before I fag and sometimes daily. Its a bad habbit and I will leave it someday. Its killing me slowly lol..and as it is, this is effecting my gym training.

You know I am recently single.

And I was talking to a beautiful lady yesterday. I was right on the verge of asking her out and she pulled out a pack of (wait for it...) ....Marlboro cigarettes!

Hey, I am not really a 'smoking snob'. But a woman and Marlboros (yikes).

My mom smoked a pack a day (which is why I don't smoke now).

I even dated a couple of girls that smoked back in my 20's but won't go through it again. I would rather she has a few extra pounds than smoke.

Yep. Anyone has the right to smoke. I just can't deal with it (no offense to smokers meant).

    Hey that's my 2 cents

I understand that people smoke cause it relaxes them but some smokers are just self-centred and don't even bother turning away to exhale the smoke. Ughh

No, I do not smoke because it is very dangerous to my health. Smoking is very bad for the health. It cause cancer which is very serious disease. I do not smoke and also advice other to do not smoke if you want to live a healthy and long life. Passive smoking is also very dangerous to health so be careful.

I do not smoke and I appreciate it. certainly do not think smoking should be the point as criminals just for doing so. I just read in the newspapers that the government plans to ban the display of cigarettes in the store so they hide and try to force companies to produce packets of snuff plain.

One of the perks of IM and working out of your own home: you can indulge in that vice as you please. At least until the nannies figure out a way to make smoking in your own home illegal as well (and FTR, I have no kids whose lungs to pollute with it, while as an adult well over the age of 21 I'm capable of making my own choices in my own castle).

I have never smoked and never will, its a filthy habit. ive also seen first hand the effects of smoking, ive seen a smokers lung being operated on and its all stained with tar and blackened.

my advice - never start. but if you do, go see your doctor and ask their advice on quitting.

on a side note, my auntie stopped smoking after 40 years, her breathing was terrible. after just 2 months she said her breathing was brilliant.

    not worth it imho.

I don't smoke. But I do take nasal snuff. You get a better hit of nicotine (which is no more 'dangerous' than caffeine) and there are no known health risks - unlike smoking (anything).

I used to smoke cigarettes and cigars but quit. The dangers of cigars are 'inconclusive' but studies suggest regular cigar smoking can double the chances of getting oral cancers. To put this in perspective, staying within the recommended alcohol limit triples the oral cancer risk.

My advice to anyone wanting to quit smoking (without a doubt the most dangerous way of taking nicotine) is to switch to e-cigarettes or nasal snuff. E-cigarettes, according to the BMA are 99% less dangerous than regular cigarettes. The country with the lowest % of adult smokers is Sweden with the highest % of e-cigarette users. e-cigs are no more dangerous than patches or gums but a lot more satisfying. They're cheaper two! Cheaper still is nasal snuff, a heavy user will probably spend less than $5 a week.

In the history of nasal snuff there is 1 man who developed cancer due to his habit and he was an unusal case - he put it in his ear!

Whether or not smoking is worth it

Obviously there is a known risk to health that comes with smoking. The harm comes from inhaling smoke. The issue is sometimes confused - often deliberately - by treating smoking / tobacco / nicotine as all the same thing. Tobacco is about as harmful as coffee and nicotine is as dangerous as caffeine. If you're a insect, you'd want to avoid eating coffee plants and tabacco leaves because the caffeine and nictone in these plants acts as an insectide. But if you're a bit bigger, you'll find the effects of these substances quite pleasant. Coffee was discovered, supposedly, by shepherds seeing the reaction of goats after eating the berries.

Smokeless tobacco products are about as harmful as coffee products. And if you smoked tea-leaves or ground coffee you'd run the same health risks as smoking tobacco.

Alcohol is another substance used recreationally by human beings but unlike nicotine and caffeine it is much more harmful. As I mentioned above, drinking what is considered 'safe' quantities of alcohol is more of a cancer risk than smoking cigars or a pipe.

It is easy to say that it just isn't worth the risk of taking tobacco or drinking coffee, or alcohol and that people ought to just abstain. This does make a lot of sense because nobody needs to take any of these substances. However, for some, going without wine with a meal, or champagne to celebrate, beers with friends, etc. makes life less enjoyable and they'd rather run the risk of cancer. This is also a reasonable approach.

Since 2 or 3 beers a week (or a glasses of wine) is more of a cancer risk than smoking a cigar every day, only those people who drink less than that (or preferably nothing at all) can accuse cigar or pipe smokers of taking unnecessary risks.

Anyone who doesn't drink at all but takes smokeless tabacco actually decreases their likelihood of getting cancer (since nicotine helps ward off some cancers).

Smoking cigarettes in my opinion isn't worth the risk which is considerably greater than drinking, or smoking cigars and pipes.

well I did smoke for about a long time , but then I quit and have never looked back. It has been long enough now that my Dr. says my lungs are back to about 85% normal. If you do smoke, please think about quiting. It's better for you in the long run(life) If you don't smoke then please don't spend all of your time ranting and raving at the ones that do. They are addicted and it is very hard to quit! personal experience here. sometimes we just need to think about ourselves long enough to see ourselves doing the right thing.

No thanks. I get enough in my system without smoking them myself.

If you smoke and you're considerate enough to not do it around non smokers, thank you. If you smoke around others regardless, well, I'd rather not get banned so I'll not continue...
