Warriors,

I just saw on the news that Japan was hit with a 8.8 earthquake.

I don't know Kevin Riley except for talking to him in chat rooms and
a couple times in Warrior Forum, but my thoughts are out to you.
Hope you and your family is safe.

Also hope that everyone else is safe in Japan...

Fine here. It was up in Miyagi prefecture. We just felt the tailend. Worried about a family member who is now by the epicenter, but no communication (all phones are down).

Kevin, so glad to hear you're alright! That's one crazy-big earthquake to be close to.

Has anyone heard from Craig DeSorcy? Isn't he based out of Japan?

Wow, I'm watching a tsunami sweep thru part of Japan on TV, and it's incredibly frightening to behold. It looked to be 15 ft tall, and was overtaking roads with cars traveling on it.

Yeah, it looks like the water is over-cresting farm buildings in that field.

      Easily a 15ft wave...

Thanks for dropping by, Kevin, to let us know you are okay. I do hope you hear from your relative soon. Of course we all hope for a low number of casualties. I love Japan and its people and customs and today I am very sad.

I lived in Japan for three years, and the Kobe earthquake of Jan 1995 woke me up as my apartment shook and rumbled several hundred miles away. The Kobe quake was only a 7.2 quake on the Richter scale. Kobe, population of 1.5 million, suffered over 4600 dead. The eipicenter was 20km away.

Remember the scale is logarithmic. "For example, a magnitude 5.3 might be computed for a moderate earthquake, and a strong earthquake might be rated as magnitude 6.3. Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude; as an estimate of energy, each whole number step in the magnitude scale corresponds to the release of about 31 times more energy than the amount associated with the preceding whole number value." from the USGS

So 8.9 is at least 31 times stronger than 7.2 when you remember it is logarithmic. Of course it all depends on where the epicenter is, and this one was 15 miles undersea, but still sounding pretty darn close to a population of 1 million.

This is the largest Richter scale number I have been alive for, I believe. There is no upper limit to the scale, so it is not 8.9 out of 10.

Keeping my eyes and ears on the news...

I have many family and friends in Japan and were able to get in touch with just a few of them. One of them called within the hour of the tsunami hitting to let us know he was ok.

The quake has been officially recorded as an 8.9 mag. 24.4 km deep (that's one shallow quake, thank God the epicenter was so far offshore the main land). The tsunami was reported as 10 feet by someone who obviously couldn't convert meters to feet was a 30 foot wall of water.

Here on the W. Coast of the US all I've been able to find out is that the tsunami has reached the Oregon coast but resulted in only 5 foot waves (so far, they keep coming and the first of them isn't always the largest). The Tsunami is slated to hit San Fransisco in about 2 and 1/2 hours (around 12 - 12:30 here) so I'll be waiting for that update soon.

So far reports are that the nuclear plants are stable even though there were a few problems. They are reporting no radiation leaks.

Kevin, PhoebeSmellyCat - I hope your loved ones turn up safe very soon. My heart goes out to you not knowing where they are. I can't even imagine how that would feel. God grant me never having to find out. Godspeed to you all.

There are reports circulating that the 6.6 "aftershock" happened on a different fault, not the same one that triggered the massive 8.9. If more than one fault is triggering earthquakes in that area, it would seem to be more serious. Fox News now reporting that the quake ruptured earths crust 150 miles long!

"Nearly 88,000 people reported missing according to Kyodo official news agency."

These figures are just staggering. I cannot imagine the total devastation and chaos happening there now. It will take a huge cooperative effort for Japan to recover.

ETA: Update regarding the 88K figure. Taken from this link (Earthquake Update: List Of Reports From Around The World (UPDATED)):

UPDATE: The post originally quoted from a Kyodo news report that 88,000 people were missing. It is now appearing that the number might be much, much smaller and that that number may have in fact come from a typo or mistranslation. Some news outlets are still using 88,000, but we’ve taken that figure out of this post and any other post and will await a more certain tally.
Not sure what numbers are accurate at this point. Even one life lost is one too many.

Another aftershock about 45 minutes ago 85 miles from Tokyo, 5.0 on the Richter Scale.

The 8.9 quake is now being called an aftershock.

198 earthquakes near Japan in the past week. 10-degree Map Centered at 40°N,140°E

I just read that Mount Karangetang, an Indonesian volcano, erupted mere hours after the 8.9 Sendai Earthquake.

Edit: One hour later: 204 earthquakes on that map now, 5 in the past hour. Everytime I click refresh, that number goes up!

147 earthquakes on that map, which shows all the earthquakes near Japan in the past week. Incredible! Horrific!!!!!

6.2 magnitude was at 18:59 UTC
46 km (28 miles) NNE of Nagano, Honshu, Japan
        Depth
        10 km (6.2 miles)

5.5 magnitued was at 19:31 UTC
38 km (23 miles) NNE of Nagano, Honshu, Japan
        Depth
        10.3 km (6.4 miles)

And there are some serious aftershocks on the Sendai side as well: 5.5, 6.3, 5.1 in the last hour alone.

        Wasn't meant to be funny.
Some poster came up with the death toll being at 88,000. I have checked with several news agencies and can't find anything to confirm this. What I understand is that the death toll is within the region of several hundred, perhaps low Thousands. I would like to know how he came up with this number.

I really didn't see how things could get any worse over there. There is a nuclear reactor over there that is now in danger of melting down. Reuters and the Washington Post are reporting on it. Fox News reported that radiation levels are 1000 times higher than normal.

Interesting what Nostradamus had to say about this:
    Century 3, verse 3
Mars and Mercury, and the silver joined together, Towards the south extreme drought: In the depths of Asia one will say the earth trembles, black waters ravish the lands.

Such a terrible tragedy - absolutely shocking. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Japan right now.

Glad that Kevin and his family are all safe. Tiffany Dow has a post on her blog about Craig Desorcy Is Craig Desorcy Safe in Japan? he is safe.

James B Allen was mentioned in Tiffany's email about being based in Japan, I don't know if anyone has heard from him.

Watched several news shows and they are saying numbers like 800 missing and 800 known dead (but then 250 unidentified dead) - this one in particular coming from Japan itself.

I am pretty sure they don't have much of a clue yet and probably many more than that but a long way to 88,000!

I am here on the water on the California coast and watching the tsunami damage we have had as a result - very minor comparatively, further up north and down south - 100 pleasures boats wrecked.

I am on a quiet bay so not even any small waves - but I will tell you my dream of living on the ocean may be dashed long before I will ever afford it.

Tsunami - happens to other countries - oh yeh? Well it is coming a little too close now.

What I am praying is that they have seen the worst of it now and there will be nothing else - namely one of the nuclear power plants zoning out - which they say would be worse than Chernobyl.

Anyway I am so sorry for all the trauma and death being suffered in Japan...

I am in Japan, and this earthquake has been unbelievable. Totally shocked the whole nation. I am fine, as are my friends and family also living here, but 100's of thousands of Japanese have been severely affected and probably 10,000 plus have lost their lives. It was officially upgraded to 9.0 in magnitude, and with the tsunami (up to 10 meters high) and now the possibility of a nuclear powerplant melt down the country is totally devastated. Your support and prayers are greatly appreciated. I started another link for those who want to contribute to relief via donations to the international Redcross.

gforces, thanks for letting us know you are okay. I watch in sadness as more reports and photos reach us now. I was in Japan when the Kobe earthquake of 1995 struck - there was no tsunami like last week's. Still the mood of the entire country was somber and people felt so helpless. Every night on the TV news the names of the confirmed dead would be shown in long lists. Soon the lists became so long they stopped doing that and people relied on the printed lists in the newspapers.

Yes, it's been terrible out there. It's so sad when you think about it that moments ago things were all fine, and suddenly everything is in chaos. So sad. Hope they are able to curtail those nuclear reactors.

My heart goes out to the people of Japan.
I've always admired Japan as a strong and powerful country, so I am positive they will recover from these unfortunate incidents.
So many tragedies happening this year - citizens revolt in the middle east, disastrous earthquake in New Zealand and now this.
