How are Warriors in Japan?

Anyone up on this at all?

I know there are quite a few warriors that live in Japan - Just wanted to see if anyone knows if anyone was affected by the quake/tsunami? I sure hope not...

My thoughts go out to them and their families. The tsunami footage that I've seen thus far is devastating. One of the worst quakes in history.

Been wondering the same thing... afraid to ask.

I know Kevin Riley's in Japan. Not sure who else.

Hope all's well with Japan Warriors.

Interesting. I keep hearing more and more things unveil. Trying to keep up with it all across a few websites and news channels.

What about the west coast of the U.S.? I heard that was supposed to be coming soon, too. Anyone know?

Well I'm on the west coast of Canada (Vancouver), and we got nothing. Though we do have Vancouver Island that buffers stuff like this.

From what I've seen, a few places along the US coast got some pretty big waves that dragged a few boats out of marinas, but no major damage.

    Hey Warriors,

Dunno much about this, I only seen some glimpses on the news. From what I have seen though it looks terrible. Really hope everyone is okay. Seems the south east of the planet has been getting pummeled really bad recently. Just hope it's not as bad as it seems on TV, they do tend to show the worst of worst, as stated by Craig and John. (We don't know each other Craig, but nonetheless I'm glad you weren't affected too badly.)

James Brown, James B Allen, Stu Sterling - at hotel in Tokyo. Stranded but unharmed. Their families at home OK too.

Craig Desorcy - walking his dog at the time, might have brown trousers, but otherwise OK.

Dave McGimpsey - here in Osaka, where we did not get hit.

Kevin Riley - our family is fine. We had the tailend swaying down here - which was like being drunk. Family members who were in Sendai (main devastation area) are safe and accounted for.

I was walking my two dogs when it hit.

heart-attack maybe? At 44 and in very good health?

Then I realized what was happening. The biggest earthquake ever,
    here in Japan was happening.

  • Some would say this is due to the moon Due to the moon moving on an elliptical route, the moon will be at its closest in 2 decades on the 19th of march. It has to do with the gravitational pull and this affects the sea...

Some venture as far as to say that it could also cause earthquakes, though there is little evidence to back this up.

The gravitational attraction that the Moon exerts on Earth is the major cause of tides in the sea; the Sun has a lesser tidal influence. If the Earth possessed a global ocean of uniform depth, the Moon would act to deform both the solid earth (by a small amount) and ocean in the shape of an ellipsoid with high points directly beneath the Moon and on the opposite side of the Earth. However, as a result of the irregular coastline and varying ocean depths, this idealization is only partially realized. While the tidal flow period is generally synchronized to the Moon's orbit around Earth, its phase can vary. In some places on Earth there is only one high tide per day, though this is somewhat rare.
The tidal bulges on Earth are carried ahead of the Earth–Moon axis by a small amount as a result of the Earth's rotation. This is a direct consequence of friction and the dissipation of energy as water moves over the ocean bottom and into or out of bays and estuaries. Each bulge exerts a small amount of gravitational attraction on the Moon, with the bulge closest to the Moon pulling in a direction slightly forward along the Moon's orbit, because the Earth's rotation has carried the bulge forward. The opposing bulge has the opposite effect, but the closer bulge dominates due to its comparative closer distance to the Moon. As a result, some of the Earth's rotational momentum is gradually being transferred to the Moon's orbital momentum, and this causes the Moon to slowly recede from Earth at the rate of approximately 38 millimetres per year. In keeping with the conservation of angular momentum, the Earth's rotation is gradually slowing, and the Earth's day thus lengthens by about 23 microseconds every year (excluding glacial rebound). Both figures are valid only for the current configuration of the continents. Tidal rhythmites from 620 million years ago show that over hundreds of millions of years the Moon receded at an average rate of 22 millimetres per year and the day lengthened at an average rate of 12 microseconds per year, both about half of their current values. See tidal acceleration for a more detailed description and references.
The Moon is gradually receding from the Earth into a higher orbit, and calculations[9][10] suggest that this would continue for about fifty billion years. By that time, the Earth and Moon would become caught up in what is called a "spin–orbit resonance" in which the Moon will circle the Earth in about 47 days (currently 29 days), and both Moon and Earth would rotate around their axes in the same time, always facing each other with the same side. However, the slowdown of the Earth's rotation is not occurring fast enough for the rotation to lengthen to a month before other effects change the situation: about 2.1 billion years from now, the increase of the Sun's radiation will have caused the Earth's oceans to vaporize, removing the bulk of the tidal friction and acceleration.

Not to worry you, and I don't know if you were living in the US in 1993. But remember:

1993 Storm of the Century - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Happened supposedly two weeks prior to the moon getting closer to the earth. Some of these things are amazing to find out.

Such as in 2.1 billion years our ocean will be dried up, and our days increase in-time by 23 microseconds a year :O So in 50 billion years the moon will circle the earth in 47 days.

But I'm sure you'll be fine

Ken Ring is someone who believes in this theory (Predict Weather - the home of long range weather) and has taken a lot of flack for it also, he got chewed out in an interview which was actually the worst interview I have ever seen as the clown doing the interviewing didn't let him get a word in and tried to make him look foolish but it really did backfire on him.

He also predicts something big is going to happen on the 20th march Is 20 March significant? - Predict Weather - the home of long range weather and I see he had a 6+ magnitude predicted for the 12th March give or take a day but it wasn't predicted to be as big as the Japan one was..... I too might be keeping away from big buildings around the 20th!

Predicted a 6 mag quake? LOL - less than 10 days after an almost 9 mag quake? Sorry, I'm not impressed. There are around 140 mag 6 quakes a year, and after a quake as large as Japans, there's gonna be aftershocks for awhile. I'm not sure what he predicates his prediction on - but he's likely to be right just by the pure fact that you can pick a three to 4 day span any time and be more than likely to have one mag 6 hit somewhere. Maybe he'd prefer to pick on mag 5 quakes so he'll have several to choose from every day of the year. (serious stat, not being funny).

There is one major hot spot that a quake is overdue - that's the Cascadia Subduction Zone, 1,500 mile stretch from N. CA up through part of Canada. If that blows, as expected, it will be a Japan size quake but a lot closer to shore. In light of the magnetic polar shift and the resultant crustal shift that's going on, that one will likely blow very shortly. Scientists say 50 year max on that one. I've been tracking stats for 5 years and I'm thinking real soon. The clusters out there are acting funny.

In light of the magnetic polar shift and the resultant crustal shift that's going on, that one will likely blow very shortly. Scientists say 50 year max on that one. I've been tracking stats for 5 years and I'm thinking real soon. The clusters out there are acting funny.
So you are poo-pooing his predictions and then you make your own that there will be one soon??............isn't that ironic?....

No - he predicted a mag 6 quake and given a day either way, he can't be very far off - 2 or 4 a week are normal and that means he's not making a prediction at all - he just said something he already knows he'll very likely be right about figuring that most people don't know the stats on quakes.

What I am talking about is a Japan size quake or larger and it's not much of a prediction either. It's supposed to blow - I just think it's going to be very soon is all. Scientists say 50 years max.
That area produces mag 9 quakes. I'll give the depth on it though - 10 to 35 km. Just like every other major quake in the last year, and with Cascadia about the only subduction zone that hasn't blown off a strong quake in the last 3 years. Magnetic pole has traveled over 100 miles since then and watching the stats every day like I do for my earthquake watch, I've seen some very troubling stuff coming up lately. But I'm not sitting here telling you I have proof of a theory by predicting something that happens all the time anyhow. Get that difference.

No....He has specifically said it will occur within the Canterbury area which has already suffered a couple of major earthquakes, quite different and by no means normal in any case......so you are wrong, he is making a prediction that it will happen in a specific place within a specific time frame, he isn't saying that it will occur somewhere in the world.....

But, still predicting earthquakes is not an exact science and in fact most scientists say that it is impossible to do. All you are talking about are averages. You still are making a prediction based on your theory while discrediting somebody else's and just because you watch earthquake stuff everyday does not make you more informed than Ken Ring or any other scientist. The truth is I could put you in the same pile as Ken Ring as I've never heard him say that he has absolute proof that his theories are correct......unless of course you have proof that yours are??

A lot say we should fear the 19th of march :O

That guy who has predicted a couple of earthquakes was on the news today predicting the March 19th weekend was a likely window for an earthquake somewhere between Vancouver and Mexico.

      LOL

He certainly left a large margin for error, although I would still be impressed if the West Coast of North America was rocked by a major earthquake this weekend.

I JUST got through to my mom & dad. But I was most concerned about my 89 yr old grand parents live in Fukushima, which is one of areas affected (just south of Sendai). Fukushima is where JB and Stu live too.

My grand parents are safe, electricity is running to keep them warm. Water is shut down but say they are okay!

So thankful for all the prayers.

I knew Kevin was in Osaka so first thing I did was look at the map to see what area was most affected. What amazes is that it was felt in Osaka. Powerful quake.

It seems to me the nuclear angle is being played up (overplayed?) on the news here. It might be more critical than I know (know nothing of the situation) but it's reported huge generators have already been put on the site so it sounds like there were plans for such an emergency and they are being followed.

What impressed me was a report that 8000 soldiers were already on duty helping out....less than 24 hours after the quake. Maybe we should send some representatives to see how Japan manages such a quick reaction. Judging from Katrina and the oil spill - we could use the training.

Glad everyone's OK - I would be terrified if the earth started having under my feet!

Living in California, I've always considered earthquakes to be an "E" ticket ride ... mostly because I've been lucky enough not to have ever been close the epicenter.

P.S. - For those that don't know, the "E" ticket ride refers to the best rides at Disneyland quite a few years ago before they went to a one price covers all.

Speaking for myself, I think that is about as credible as me sitting down with Godzilla having cookies and milk in King Kong's kitchen.

            Hi blog8491,

No disaster yet! According to the news report that I just watched, there was a minor explosion in Fukushima that did not trigger a huge leakage. They have advised residents to evacuate around a 20km zone as a precaution.

However, I am only relying on the media for this information and I can't speak as to how accurate that it may/may not be at this time.

Thanks to all the Warriors who expressed their concerns and good wishes to those of us who live in Japan.

I myself am OK and as has been mentioned and also, to the best of my knowledge, the other WF members are OK too. Although my place was pretty well trashed on the inside, I got off extremely light compared to so many others and the suffering that they are currently experiencing.

I was actually in my home office when it hit and since we get them fairly frequently, wasn't overly concerned until it started moving sideways and picking up the pace a bit. I stood in a doorway for a few seconds and when things started crashing down around me, decided to take a quick walk outside and join a lot of other folks in the street, who were holding their pets, etc in their arms.

As most of you would be aware, there are a lot of areas that were hit hard. If you are able to assist in any way via donations through reputable relief organizations that you may be aware of, please help if you can.

    Many thanks,

I know! My heart breaks to watch the total devastation of people's homes. Thanks Tiff.

I didn't have any problems getting candles myself in my area. Had to stand in line for 45 min to make the checkout though. Lots of folks panic buying and mass buy ups going on in a lot of suburban supermarkets, but not so much in Tokyo, so I was told. Fortunately, the power wasn't rationed in my area today, but I'll hang on to the candles for a bit.

Thanks very much David, I appreciate it.

With regards to the nuclear issue:

There is always a chance that the wind can change in any direction however, I am not overly concerned at this time.

I am in a different prefecture to the plant myself, but along with everyone else, will continue to monitor further developments.

Basically, it's a case of sifting through the myriad of misinformation, alarmist speculation, what is being played down, what's not being said, what they don't know, general media BS, and what is actually fact, in order to get a more accurate picture.

While this issue is certainly not to be taken lightly and may deteriorate further or improve at any time, neither should it be blown out of all proportion based on wild speculation, ignorance and/or factual inaccuracies.

In addition, attention should not be diverted from other immediate issues and hardships, that so many folks are experiencing in the hard hit areas at the moment.

    Thank you for everyone's prayers.

My grandparent's city (Fukushima) detected radiation level 500 times higher than normal today. I spoke about this in a recent interview with Channel 5 Phoenix local TV news (You can view the video in the article if you're based in US).

On be half of my people, I also thank you for all the aid and troops you're sending to Japan.

I spoke with my father yesterday on the phone, he was awaken in the middle of the night by M 6.0 quake. Two days ago, my mother said she felt aftershocks four times during the day. But they are home with water access and electricity turned on so we're just concerned about the leaking radiation in the area. My grandparents are not ordered to evacuate at this time, but it's getting closer.

The radiation situation is starting to get quite worrisome now, from the latest news I've been reading (I don't really like watching the television as they tend to overdramatize things).

They seem to be stuck in a catch-22 situation, especially since the water pools around the reactor cores seem to have leaked out due to the earthquake, leaving the nuclear cores exposed and causing the radiation levels to reach very high levels. With this level of radioactivity, it's not even possible to get close enough to the reactor to dump sufficient water on the cores or manually fix the situation. The longer the cores are left uncovered, the more radiation levels are going to skyrocket - the cooling systems have been apparently knocked out by the tsunami, and no one is even sure if they can be turned back on remotely.

As of 10 minutes ago, according to the latest report, the situation is simply this..The US government extended their recommended safety zone as an additional, conservative precautionary measure. Some embassies are still advising non essential citizens to leave and assisting many of their citizens to leave in some way or another. Again, as a precautionary measure.

The SDF (Self Defense Forces) have been spraying the reactor with sea water in order to cool it down sufficiently, to allow workers to get closer and also make it possible for power to be reconnected to the cooling pumps. There was some small measure of cooling, which should decrease the heat even further with successive efforts. At this stage, they are hopeful that power can be reconnected to the pumps tomorrow, Saturday, Japan time.

They are working around the clock and doing a mighty job, under extremely adverse conditions. As have the Japanese SDF, International relief workers and volunteers.

I would stress again though, that while the situation can change at any given time, that regardless of irresponsible and factually inaccurate media reports to the contrary, there is nothing to panic about at this time and that there are thousands still missing or in need of emergency relief aid right now, today.

If Warriors can assist in any way and I know that many already have, it would go a long way towards easing the victims plight.

        Mike
