This song has been covered all the way to one of my favorite characters in Rock...Ted Nugent. I thought this was a good performance of it...

I went to my first concert when I was 13 and saw Ten Years After. I've also seen Alvin Lee solo. Alvin Lee is the best live performer I've ever seen and he's still in my top 10 most played on my ipod.

Man oh man,the things you learn here...The Cure covered Purple Haze?..I may never be the same...lol

One of the things I find hard about these music threads, is the amount of music you can apply to "name your favorite" this or that.
If your like me, and I think there are a few people here, that like me, listen to a very broad range of genre's.

But sticking to Kim's original pick of genre..how many remember this...

I don't remember exactly when and where I heard that song but I have to say I was blown away the first time I heard The Cure do Purple Haze. It was on a Hendrix Tribute CD which I immediately went and got after hearing it.

I was also a big Uruah Heep fan. Ken Hensley was a very important part of the bands sound,along with David Byron,of course.

I like Neil Diamond..and I'm not even a blue haired old lady...another 'strange' cover (IMHO ...of course)

In 1985, I saw Deep Purple at Budakan (which was about 10 times smaller than I had envisioned it) in Japan...when I got out of the military they said I had lost 15% of my hearing...at least 5% had to be from that concert..lol

I was going to say you and Bill are showing your age with those songs...

Reminded me about when my son was about 5 or 6, his mom and I were going thru both our old LP vinyls. My son took one look at those and said, "Dad, those are the biggest CD's I've ever seen". Kid's certainly know how to make you feel old, without even trying.

Where would this old timers reunion be, without The King?...and a fried nana samich.

  That's standard McClinton. Dude is just pure fun. I think the only reason he never made it bigger is that he's impossible to classify. I'd call it Texas roadhouse rockin' blues, but I wouldn't argue with a lot of other tags for him.

I think 6-7 of Led Zep's songs are Willie Dixon songs...Here's another Blues classic LZ covered, this one by Sonny Boy Williamson:

I'd say I have a fairly big collection of blues songs and I listen to blues more than anything else. To be honest, that Howling Wolf version of Killing Floor is the #2 most played song on my ipod. I really love that song and have for many years.

And Leadbelly is great. I listen to Leadbelly more than I do Led Zepplin. I've posted these two videos before, but anyone into the history of modern music should check these out and see how "modern" Leadbelly was back in the 1930's. He's singing "grunge" songs in the 30's:

Swishy = Gay Boys. Pretty Gay Boys = Freur

Swishy = Sorta easy going next to my normal punk and hard rock taste = Modern English (may be gay also)...

You guys have brought alot of good memories along with ones I was not familiar with.

Ten Years After was one of my favorites, being a guitar player I loved the way Alvin Lee played the guitar. Alot of great songs in different styles, which made them stand out.

I actually had two chances to make a career playing drums.
The first came in 68 when the drum instructor I had recorded me and sent the tape to a friend of his in NYC. Next thing you know I got an acceptance letter to attend a music school in NYC. My parents wouldn't let me move to the city at 15 (not to mention we didn't have the money). So I missed a chance to study under this guy, which most likely would of led to studio work.

I always liked Keith Moon's drumming, I know he wasn't the most technical drummer around, but he had an 'effortless' fluidity to him.

Looking around I found this...looks like it was filmed the day before Keith discovered drugs and alcohol. lol That's old.

Both Moon and Bonham were incredible drummers.
Jim, I saw The Who about that time,and while I don't know if its the real thing,I found a site that claims to have the setlist from then.

I once saw Aerosmith...must have been mid seventies at Anaheim Stadium south of L.A. Well Asmith was in the middle of their 'let's drink the bong water too' stage of life and were allright. I remember Rick Derringer came out all by himself and just killed it with Rock n Roll Hoochie Koo.

Lou Reed wrote this song after leaving Velvet Underground...he's kind of like the Desi Arnaz of the music world...so much influence, a lot that holds to this day...behind the scenes. I never thought he was a great performer, but he could write some tunes...He certainly did his own thing

Yea, like I said he had his ups and downs as a performer.
Did you ever see Trainspotting? They used that song pretty effectively in that movie. If you haven't, it's a little off the wall, but good.

I'm a fan of both these guy's. I've seen Carlos many times in concert at small venues...never disappointed. George Benson is a great songwriter and player, been a fan since I was a young pup. Probably heard a few songs he wrote, Whitney Houston made famous.

Heres a band that had some staying power.
The orginal bass player, Pete Quaife quit.Various reasons have been given,but I saw2 a bio of the Kinks on the biography channel just this week and he said it was mainly due to a severe case of claustrophobia. He was diagnosed with renal (kidney) failure in 1998 and died in 2010 of renal failure. After quitting music,he became a graphic artist and after beingdiagnosed with renal failure he did at least two cartoon books about dialysis. you can see a couple of examples here:

You know I was just thinking the other day Kurt...how much I miss Jerry Reed. I think my kid was watching Smokey and the B or whichever he was in...somehow came up. I heard a few of his songs many years ago, but it was his own character I was a fan of. Whenever he was in a show I would watch.

I'll see and raise your Lowrider (wish I had a dollar for every time I heard that song growing up) with a Cisco Kid.

Jerry Reed was a good character actor and probably better known for that than his songs, but he was pretty successful musically back in the day and underrated IMO. The 2 songs I posted above are both really fun and "When You're Hot You're Hot" caught on as a popular phrase...

Yea, RIP Jerry Reed, he was just one of those guy's it was hard to dislike...IMO.

I wanted to start a thread on Motown hits, haven't looked to see if there is one yet. Along with the rock of that era, I was a huge fan of most of the bands in Motown.

The Funk era...I would have to look hard in that one.

Well I'll damn near have to fold on that, because there was very few like Parliament.

I've just noticed,but I think this guy has been MIA in most of our music threads, and if you don't know his music,you should. This one most people are familiar with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version. David Bromberg. Mr Bojangles.

I think it was the genreless period...lol

Check this out...it gives you a short guitar riff and you guess which song it is.
Some are easy some have 2-3 albums by the same band...which is where I got tripped up...I got a 73 out of 100...

I posted this song on the obscure music thread, and while it's used in a Heineken commercial, it's also a bit of a tribute to the Rat Pack and that era.

The second sentence in the song is something like:
"Hang with the Rats and smoke cigars. Have a break with Frank and count the stars." (?)

I found it cool that a current pop tune referenced Frank and the Rat Pack. Nice to know at least some of the kids today have a sense of history.

I don't know about younger people not knowing who they are, you guy's might be surprised. I know I am sometimes, when I read some of the comments under the youtube videos. Also some of the younger people in the music industry who give them credit. I guess it depends on how much into music they are. I know as I got older, (still probably not as old as some of the fogy's in this thread..lol) I appreciate them much more...for me, especially Dino.
All three (main rats) Dino, Sammy and Frank were good and looked liked they really had a good time doing it.

I know one of my weaknesses had to be which Beatles album that was from, and probably Uriah Heep, they had 3 albums on there... I think...lol I just started wearing reading glasses about 6 months ago.

Your more than welcome, just a tid bit, but kind of play's into why I would like to get something going. How most, (I would think) bands tie together from the early sixties on. You know like The Yardbirds tie to Led Zep because of Jimmy Page etc..etc...
I remember reading something quite some time ago about how one could link bands for a long way. I really wish I could remember what it was. I guess you'd really have to into the history of rock, or Motown for that matter.

That might make for a cool niche site...

Pete Frame founded Zigzag, one of the seminal British Rock magazines, in 1969. A feature of that mag was what he termed "Rock Family Trees" - diagrams which attempted to chart the connections between artists and bands.

These trees were published around the world, including in Rolling Stone magazine, so you've probably seen some examples.

Before the Allman Bros was the Allman Bros - they were Allman Joys (?)

I knew it (?). I had a memory and I was just never sure I didn't get it mixed up with Almond Joy Candy bars or if it was really who turned out to be the Allman Bros.

When my son was under 2 years old, I choreographed a play at the Straight Theatre on Haight Street (Haight Ashbury - called 'The San Francisco Blues') - (got a write up in Variety Magazine)

Somehow Allman Joys was there.

When they went on their break during rehearsal, my baby sat up there on the drums and did a solo. So I always tell people he 'sat in' with the Allman Bros at 18 months old. (autographs $5 LOL)

You know it's funny (weird) I was trying to brush up on some trivia the other day...looking thru...I suddenly realized how many people have passed away.

I knew Bolin had...but compiled, I had forgotten how many.

I don't know what wins the rock race to the Grim Reaper...drugs or plane crashes.

Yeah...Tommy was from Boulder and was a legend with my group of high school friends. Hard to believe he's been gone for about 35 years. Many thought he was on the verge of being a Superstar before he died. Luckily I did get to see him in concert right before he left us...

And he's still one of my favorites...

Wow, I read that it wasn't directly available in the US.

Maybe I can find it on vinyl at a used store around here.

I have a vinyl to digital converter, sometimes I miss the scratch and hiss on vinyl (or as my son calls LP's...the biggest cd's he's ever seen).

Hope I don't have to go to LA to find it (it's amazing what you can find in Hollywood stores sometimes)

I have Teaser and Private Eye (Tommy's two solo albums) both on vinyl.

And I know what you mean about the scratches...I can't listen to Hendrix's Cross Town Traffic without my custom "click click....click click" in all the rigth places.

BTW, I'm either vinyl or mp3 and don't care much for those that came in between like CDs and cassettes.

Hey guys! I dont want to pull up an old thread to say it, since most of the ones who would give a flying flip are on this one... but I FOUND MY AMBER PIC again.

Finally got a break to play with it for about 5 hours, and I have to tell you its amazing. I DO in fact like it bettter than than tort. Shocking to me, because I have never played anything that compared despite alot of big claims.

Its amazing, totally just a flat amazing playing pic. It has no click whatsoever. I hate playing with picks that sound like a playing card going through bicycle spokes...

Then you have thickness, thickness is one matter that decreases click a little...... but Im telling you this pick has so little "click" it sounds as good as playing with your fingers. You get the "Note" and a little cool "thump" on the string, not clicky crapola and 'rings" that cloud your notes. Its so hard that it doesnt give at all and it feels very much like it just rolls right over the stings... even single notes you can play almost twice as fast because it just rolls back and forth with no edges to catch.

Feels great in your hand to , like it sort of melts into your fingerxs... 50 million years of waiting to be a pic. wow!

On the electrics I might get a thinner version so you can get a little scratch here and there where you want it, on not where you dont...

Anyway. Im getting more. Im an Amber pick man now! Sold!

Ps He always confuses me, because I haver a constant battle as to whether I should just keep claw2 picking with a flat pick like I always have, or truly switch gears and just go thumb pick all the way... I mean you can be a Jack of all trades, but you have to have a main one if you want to master it like Tommy... I can play all kinds of stuff with a thumbpic or claw picking style, but if the two sound the same, then you arent very good at using a thumb pick... I keep telling myself Im gonna do it for a straight year and train the claw picking style into straight thumbpicking... However, thats when Im playing the tele... As soon as the strat starts calling, then all thumbpicking thoughts go out the widow again and I start hearing pinch harmonics... and I think "Who needs a thumbpick"?

Then here comes Emmanuel again... Sheeesh.

Lemme show the difference to those what dont know

Well I've always listened to music other then rock, just not that much.
But it was always about the drums with me and how I could play a rock version of whatever I was listening to.
Now it's all about the music no matter what genre it is.
I think the best way I can describe it is, my whole life I was a drummer. Now I'm learning how to be a musician.

He's an example of why I don't play guitar. How the hell does he get his hands and fingers to move like that:confused:

Maybe the most underrated bluesman of all time...Elmore James was pretty much the first to play "Hawaiian" guitar (slide guitar) on an electric guitar. Hawaiian guitar was what bluesman called "slide" and after instruments went electric, they seemed to forget about slide, until Elmore James.

He was very talented...Maybe even more of a poet almost than a lyricist. But I like Morrison even more for his voice. I prefer men that sing like men and don't care much for the screamers that are so popular in Rock. Morrison sung like a man.

  There are two great tributes to Roy Orbison and this is one of them.
  
  For years I stared at this video on YouTube but never clicked it. The 80's hair....nuff said.
  
  A while back I watched it and WOW.
  
  Watching this video you can see he is nervous and clearly in over his head....but he floors everybody and knocks it outta the park. Congrats Benny on an outstanding tribute.

I agree on the poet part Kurt. If I remember right, Morrison actually preferred being referred to as a poet. Was many years ago, I read that book and I hadn't thought about it being gone till wrote that...lol

I have noticed with little kids, maybe two and younger especially...that they actually prefer a 'deep' voice when music plays.

I have noticed that several times...including with Morrison and a few male singers. Seems almost to soothe them.
Something I noticed quite a few years ago with my friends kids.

And held true with mine.

The closest anybody came in the tribute concert for Freddie was George Micheal...who promptly put out a cover album.

I actually didn't really realize till then...what a talented singer Freddie was.

  Just heard this song on the radio for the first time in ages. It was a UK hit in 1975, but didn't trouble the US charts.
  
  Interesting thing about the band - they were formed to take the place of Fleetwood Mac for a US tour (F Mac split up before the tour, but were under contract to perform) and the idea was that Mick Fleetwood would join them on tour.
  
  However, he failed to appear and the tour collapsed. The lyrics of this song are supposedly a rant against Mick Fleetwood for this betrayal.
  
  Pretty good song, actually - but it was the only hit that Stretch had.

Most people have never heard of Jeff Healey, but they do recognize him as the blind guitar player from 'Road House'. He had a very unusual playing style, and could rip with the best of 'em. Unfortunately, he passed away a few years due to cancer. This is one of his signature songs that still holds up just as well today as ever.

@ Hank Some of the best 'pretty' music I ever heard was from 'local' Hawaiians I used to know. Really trippy to watch these huge 'mokes' sit down and play and sing so beautiful.

@Thom..I would love to go to the Highlands and hear the pipes playing echoing thru the glens...like they were meant for.

@Kim..That Machine was very cool...and your spot on...ahead of their time.

Also, Kim W., I read somewhere in this thread that you had never seen Alvin Lee perform live. Bummer!

Caught Lee, Johnny Winter and Leslie West in a theater in Brooklyn, mid eighties, last show for the theater before being closed down. Fortunately, the rowdies didn't destroy the place until the music was over.

Lee and Winter were great but Leslie stole the show.

Rock Island Line is a folk/blues classic...The version of Leadbelly's I posted above isn't my favorite of his, but I couldn't find my favorite, which is very raw.

In reality, these songs probably aren't Leadbelly originals. He was a "songster" and knew literally 1000s and 1000s of songs. But he should get credit for bringing them to our attention. A song like "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" was probably written in the 1880s, but it's Leadbelly's version that got recorded and made available to us.

McCartney/Lennon's version isn't very good, IMO. But I posted it just to show how wide a range of fans Leadbelly had.

Also...The more I listen to Little Richard, the more and more I think of how underrated he really is. What a great voice that blends blues, rock, country and gospel.

Whistling Dixie or Willie Dixon?

Here's a very old folk/blues song, done originally by Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee. This is a version done in the 80's with Johnny Winter, Willie Dixon on bass and Sonny Terry.

Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee first started playing together in the 1920s...Willie Dixon is a product of the 40-50s and Johnny Winter of the 60s and 70s, so this is three generations of musicians on this song, which I really love. You have the old school blues vocal of Sonny and Johnny's modern guitar. Cool.

Sonny Terry was probably in his 80s when this was recoreded...

BTW, Sonny Terry is considered the first harmonica player to "suck" while he played and not just "blow", something we take for granted now:

Here's a very old folk/blues song, done originally by Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee. This is a version done in the 80's with Johnny Winter, Willie Dixon on bass and Sonny Terry.

Just about every song I post I have in my record collection. I really do love and play blues a lot. I have to tone down my love for blues music here and post other stuff so I don't bore everyone. But if I had my way, we'd listen to nothing but blues and Jeff Beck. LOL

Unlike most of his peers who where heavliy influenced by the blues greats, JB's favorite guitar player was Cliff Gallup, who was the guitar player for Gene Vincent. Cliff Gallup is an interesting story...He left Gene Vincent's band at 26 to be with his family and drove a school bus for a number of years. He lived in his own little world and when asked about guitar players like Clapton and Beck, he hadn't heard of them.

Ok first for some beer...a little of Colorado's finest.

Yes European people I realize it's not beer as you know it...

reminds me of a true story...some guy in a bar once told me "hey I know who made this beer" (not Coors) he goes "It was Paul Pilsen" (pale pilsner) I had to grab the rails to keep from falling off the bar stool laughing. And yea he was serious.

Start off the evening with (3 days off... yay)

The Eagles...rival Jim Morrison for lyrics IMHO...and one of the best bands that happened to come together...to say they meshed would be an understatement.

Considering I can literally see the border from here and look at Old Mexico everyday, besides the the fact I love this song...

In one of the coincidences of music...Quite a while ago and within about a week of each other, I heard two interviews, one with Chuck Berry and the other with Buddy Holly.

In his interview, I remember Chuck Berry talking about growing up in St. Louis. During the day he's listen to blues/rb on the radio, but wasn't allowed to listen to country music. So at night when he was in bed, he'd turn on the radio and listen to country music.

Buddy Holly then said in his interview, growing up in Texas he'd listen to country/western during the day and then listen to blues/RB at night, because he wasn't allowed to listen to blues music.

I found this really interesting, especially because I heard both interviews so close to each other...

Here's a couple of songs by each. I like hearing the influences of both and how they "met in the middle" to help create rock and roll:

His family was genuinely surprised at how many people came to the funeral,
which was in Spanish and English...for his older family members.

I'm now having the Irish version here at home, which I know for a fact he would have loved and joined.

Anyway some Scorps..funny how some 'harder' bands did so well with ballads, including Scorps, Metallica, Guns and Roses...etc

I can understand that Kurt...but this guy kind of got me into it...he was my gateway drug, I call him "G"..lol. I think a lot of the newer guy's with the 'mixed' sound are actually getting younger (urban and suburban)people to appreciate country.

Here's a very touching song by Hank Jr. about his dad and his dad's musical mentor.

Tee Tot is Rufus Payne, an old black man that Hank Sr. said taught him everything he ever knew about music. Tee Tot would give Hank lessons in exchange for meals..."Hiram" is Hank Sr's birth name.

I'm with you. I love the old country music too. Looking back I think I got my rock and roll roots from the jukebox that was in my parents drive in restaraunt when I was growing up and country from the radio.
But back then it wasn't called country orginally, it was called hillbilly.

I never knew of him myself till about 3 years ago.
My friend I ride with has been a bass player for years and plays in a couple local bands. Around 10 years ago one of his bands recorded an album, that was available locally at their gigs.
One day at work he brought me a cd of their album and of Hank III's.
All he said was listen to them both and tell me what you think.
There where around 3 songs on Hank's cd that where identical to 3 of their songs except for the lyrics

Any hoot here be the Chili Pipers (again).

The old country just seems so poetic.

My Grandma loved Henry Belefonte, which was called calypso before we heard of reggae.

My Mom loved everything from Janis to PDQ Bach.

But my Step Dad was the lead singer/guitar player for country/western bands and would play in c/w nite clubs and on the radio in Denver on the weekends. His favorite was Hank Sr and he even took "Hank" as his nick name. He'd play for us at home all the time. He's still my favorite c/w singer.

And...My favorite is The Blues and old time rock and roll. Boom Boom Boom Boom!

  It was something you really had to know and couldn't guess...The song is from the movie soundtrack "Cocktail" (with Tom Cruise) and is actually a pretty good album.

Thanks Kim...still sometimes can't believe he joined Spencer Davis when he was fourteen. In my opinion he has one of the best rock voices, definetly up there with anyone. Here's a little later with Traffic.

Traffic wasn't just Winwood though. Dave Mason contributed a lot.

While I agree that Dave Mason was a talent, he also had a habit of leaving groups quick. I know he left Traffic after the first album and left one of the groups with Clapton, quick...although I would have to look up which one.

Edit : looked it up...it was Derek and the Dominos, before they recorded anything together.

Must have been a hard head....actually he sounds like someone I see in the mirror sometimes...:p

I think On The Border was when I stopped buying their albums,but everything they did from their firsl self titled album to On The Border was classic. So classic they that actually don't fit the thread title because they were mega hit makers. But thats ok, I got to toss in one of my favorites now.

just over the hill from Hazard.
He sarted working in a coal mine when he was 15.
When my brother was transfering from D.C. to New Jersey he had a 3 or 4 week leave and came home for the duration. He played this for our father and after that dad would ask him a couple times a week; "Play that Johnny Prine song."

He went by Michael Murphy when he started out,added the Martin later:
I was given an indian head nickel in some change last night,and for some reason it made me think of this song. Not the version I like,but the best I could find online.

When I was a kid, I went to the Oklahoma State fair and heard music coming from a tent. I went over and stuck my head in and this guy was singing this song. Amazing.
