Gifting a Domain Name?

I have a friend whose firstnamelastname.com is available and I thought it might make an interesting Christmas gift.

But the only problem is that I can only find gift cards from domain registers which means I can't actually lock down the domain name right now and I would rather not register it in my own name.

Is there a company that allows you to buy the domain and give it to them via like a gift card or something of that sorts?

Anyone ever done this?

Not sure what you're talking about.

Can you buy the name yourself then transfer it to them?

He is asking if anyone knows any domain registars that will let him purchase the name in someone elses name and give it to that person instead of him having to register it in his name and then transfer it.
    I don't know any.

I had someone buy a domain name for me (firstnamelastname) and then give it to me via namecheap.com.
