I think skype is best at this time there is no one who can compete it.

  • If you both have internet, try Google Talk. I frequently talk to a friend in Colombia with it and we've never had any problems.

My friend was in Malaysia recently for some medical treatment and the connection sucked. I don't think it was skype, but rather the infrastructure of the country. Text messages from cell phone to cell phone were messing up, skype was messing up, etc.

MSN (messenger) sometimes is better sometimes worse.

If possible, try finding a better internet service provider or plug in instead of using wireless. I really think it's Malaysia (hopefully a temporary thing)

You would THINK text would go through. It is REALLY bad if it doesn't. And Internet packets weren't really made for VOIP. Normal computer communications aren't REALLY real time, and few care. A difference of a few milliseconds CAN be annoying in spoken conversation. At least land line communications was MADE for that!

When i said text. I mean text from cell phone to cell phone. It was messed up, some texts not going through or coming through the next day. Was a mess.

The text feature on skype worked except the internet would go off (apparently) every couple of seconds and the messages would spin.

I mentioned using MSN messenger. Sorry, I realized afterward that it will only work if the other person is online.

My friend is heading back to Malaysia for a few days. I'll see if it happens again. It may be some kind of temporary thing or growing pains from poor infrastructure and more and more people getting online worldwide.

I knew you meant between cell phones, but thought you meant the message ITSELF was messed up. Like I said, it is not meant to work real time. So messages being DELAYED makes sense. This is actually a FEATURE of TCP/IP! Messages that start out after a disruption can take another route, some applications can buffer or simply wait, if a disruption ever occurs. GREAT for communication between computers, NOT so great fopr PEOPLE! 8-(

Why have a gnarly cell phone involved - they suck no matter which one - with or without skype. In whatever country. Cut out every other sentence - hang - (go dead/must call back) - sux.

You can talk on Skype using headphone/microphone - PC to PC - forget the phone.

Do not dial the number - just add each other as contacts and click the username which brings up text box - then if you want to talk just click the phone ICON (not dial the little pad which is phone).

It's free PC to PC too.

    See if that helps.

Apparently ALL digital phones, which is probably all phones today in many countries, like the US, basically use VOIP, they don't have to be expensive or smart, so it kind of tells you something. And you have to wonder if all the REALLY digital traffic isn't part of the cause. It's that old bandwidth issue again! TCP/IP can handle a LOT of traffic with little bandwidth, but push it too far and it can go VERY slow! With voip, as I recall, apparently some things can get lost, so you may lose words or sentences. THEY probably get lost at the phone though.

BTW in the US, analog A and analog B are the only non digital standards that I know of. If your phone doesn't support them, it doesn't send out analog info, at least not in the US. And they will only work in that mode if there is a tower that is close enough. When I first started getting cell phones, I was very worried about where they worked, and got multi mode phones that could handle analog and digital, and different standards. Of course, a lot has happened in like 13 years.
