So back in 75 I bought a set of used conga drums, or a Conga and Tumba drum if you want to get technical.
Around 92 I disassembled they and started refinishing them.
Fast forward to around a month ago when I finally finished sanding and filling the shells and even painted them and the hardware.
The only thing left to do was replace the heads. Because of their age and going by what was on there originally I decided to get regular flat skins and form my own heads for the drums.
One place I found had either calfskin or buffalo conga skins, but they where $60 and $80 respectively and seeing how I only paid $80 for the drums originally I decided to see what else I could find. My search led me to a site where I could get medium thick calf skins for $18 each so I figured I'd give them a try, big mistake.
They sound like what they are. Cheap thin skins with a cheap tingy sound
Plus I had to wrap the inner rings with tape to make up for the thickness I lost using thinner skins.
I did find some skins on the same site that they say are conga skins for $28 but they don't list their thickness. So I guess I'll get one first to see what they are like.
Why do I get the feeling I'll end up buying the expensive ones in the end
Oh well, at least I have some flat skins I can use to make other drums with I guess.
