Which sport sends you to sleep?

Tried watching Wimbledon tennis yesterday but dozed off a lot. I also find golf very good for a snooze. I like playing and watching both sports but they just send me to sleep when I watch them.

Maybe I am getting old?

It's funny, most Americans and Canadians I know detest soccer. Likewise, most Europeans I know hate American football and baseball. I guess it has something to do what you grow up with.

      Exactly.

I can't speak for the folks up north but most Americans are used to getting our sports excitement close to every 30 seconds.

With soccer, you may have (what we perceive to be) an exciting moment 10, maybe 15 times over a 3 hour period.

That's just not enough for most American men.

I have to disagree, soccer is growing in the states slowly but its growing, with the import of older stars (aka New York and LA) via the mls.

Not that I am a massive soccer fan, but i understand the game and so I can watch a 90 minute match and find it 'fairly' interesting and occasionally exciting. Yet American football, because i guess i only have a vague idea of the rules, i find to be just constinual stop start with hardly any excitement.

Back in 1987 I think, when American football started being shown on uk tv i was at school and quite a few of the lads were interested (including me). I even had a series of magazines devoted to introducing the sport to us. Still haven't the foggiest though what it's all about. Or baseball, ice hockey, basketball..

Really im surprised alot of Euro is involved in Hockey and basketball, while i understand baseball to be mostly a Western hemisphere thing.

Soccer is growing in the states thanks to immigrants from the south but we'll have to see if their children cling to it or toss it aside for football and/or basketball.

Soccer has a good chance of replacing baseball as our 3rd most popular sport in another 20 years.

          Time will tell.

While I find baseball boring too, at least it uses hand/eye coordination. Soccer is a gimmick sport by not allowing the use of hands and is the Riverdancing of athletics, without the entertainment value of music.

Plus that flopping crap when anyone comes within 3 feet of them to get a flag is more a case of bad acting than sports. "Oh! He almost touched me, I must fall down!"

That's very funny Thom and it's also obvious you've never played "organized" baseball but
from what I can tell, you're still a pretty cool guy.

If you had, you'd realize that every single pitch, which happens about every 30 seconds, is an opportunity for something very significant to happen and you should be on the edge of your seat - every 30 seconds.
You sound like my father TL
When he was alive he would watch every game he could no matter who was playing. In fact him and my grandfather would be on the edge of their seats through the whole game.
He would even explain the strategy of the pitcher against each batter and why the batter was going to bunt, full swing, or try to walk.
So I understand it is more then what I said and I understand how people can find it exciting.
I'm just not one of those people
I didn't like playing it much as a kid either.
In fact the only sports I really enjoyed playing as a kid where (not in order) soccer, basketball, and hockey.
In soccer I was a goalie, in basketball a center, and hockey a right wing (forward).
Now a days I don't care to watch soccer at all and rarely watch basketball or hockey. Football on the other hand Well lets just say ya'll better hope the strike doesn't end. My Bucs are playing your Colts in I think week 5 on Monday night:rolleyes:

As an ex cab driver I probably knew more immigrants than most. Every one of them that was a sports/soccer fan before coming to the US became an NFL fan, bar none. They still liked soccer more, but once they understood the NFL game, they became fans of it as well.

I don't think must non-Americans understand the concept of first downs and what 3rd and 4 means and when and why you kick or punt.

Plus, there's only 16 games so each and every game means a lot.

True, but I think something similar can be said about almost any sport.
I think what TL said about baseball is a good example.

                  Little side note.
I thought of a couple more sports I played and find boring to watch, golf and swimming.

But not to the extent for football, IMO. I believe it's the most complicated sport. The shear number of players on the field at the same time is just one example.

Not to mention the number of plays and formations, film study, etc. Take any playbook from any other sport (if they have one) and put it next to an NFL playbook.

Baseball is the most individualist of the major 3.

What I like most about American football is the teamwork and all 11 players moving like a machine.

With football, there are only a few basic ways to move the ball but each has many variations.

Take the draw play ( also called the delay ) which is simply fake pass and run.

Here are a few different variations of the draw play...

                      - Normal: QB take about 3 steps and then hands off to the RB

                      - Sprint draw: QB sprints to one side but hands off to the RB going in the opposite direction.

                      - Wrap-around draw: when the QB actually goes past the RB and then gives him the ball.

The 49ers liked to run this one.

                      - Lead Draw: When one RB leads the other through the hole or simply blocks the first person available.

The Cowboys of the 90's made great use of this variation of the draw with Moose leading Emmit Smith.

                      - Spin Draw: Where the QB hands off to the RB after spinning and the hand-off is on the opposite side of the throwing hand of the QB.

                      - From The Shotgun Formation:

That's just a small example of the different variations of one American football method to move the ball.

I know basketball players are considered the "greatest" athletes, but I really think it's NFL QBs.

There was a time when I tried to talk myself out of being a fan...But then realized what's wrong with getting excited about something? All sports are really one of the few things were we can get excited over something like we did when we were kids.

And let's hope the NFL and players can get a deal done. NFL football is really my #1 passion and how I escape from all the things that matter. All I need in this world to be happy is NFL, blues, pizza and puppies. You can give all the rest to someone else.

That's a tough one regarding basketball players verses NFL QBs.

I will take the NFL over any other sport myself.

According to that story it looks good for a normal start of the season!!

According to Dick Butkus, Papa Bear George Halas would brag that he had over 500 different defenses but Butkus said if you wiggled your butt to the right Halas would declare it a different defense.

As far as I can tell there are only 6 basic defenses...

                              Here's one...

                              - Base: 4-3-4 or 3-4-4

This is a good 1st down defense where as your defense is ready for the run and the pass but also susceptible to both.

When playing this defense the defense is saying to the offense, you must out execute us because your strategy alone will not do the job.

Of course there are a few variations of this defense.

                              All The Best!!

Funny thing is I played football, baseball, hockey etc growing up, and can pitch fast like a mofo.... but stopped playing as didn't want to do it anymore. Who knows, I pry could have gone pro hahaha.

Can't argue with that. It annoys me no end. Anyone caught diving should get a minimum 5 match ban. The Spanish and Portuguese are the worst for it.
Don't see it as much in England.

The Champions League semi final between Real and Barca a few weeks ago was a ****ing disgrace. Both teams should have got gold medals for diving.

All in all though, there is a lot more skill involved in football than there is in throwball.

Having said all that, I, myself can not sit there and watch a full baseball game on TV.

          I'm probably going to crash.

I may watch for a batter or a half inning or so, but not much longer.

There are too many other things going on in the 21st century.

I know of one guy who watched almost 85 whole games in one season.

He would go down into his man-cave and hide out from the wife and kids.

The one thing I DO like about baseball is it's great to have on in the background while working. The commentators can at times be entertaining, and if something exciting happens you can stop, watch, go "Yeah!" if it's your team (or "Damn!" if it's the other), then go back to work.

Football I like a little more than baseball, but I find I much rather catch the highlights at night after all the games are over.

Basketball, Soccer and Hockey - eh, you can keep them all. It's not that I find them boring. I simply don't enjoy them. I think I would rather watch a good tennis match then one of those 3 sports.

I will admit though - I thoroughly enjoyed following the basketball playoffs thread we just had

          But don't the games take 2 1/2 - 3 hours to play???

Anyways, I've been to a world cup game.

It was the Saudi's verses the Swiss and the Saudi's won by a score of 1 nil.

It was a big eating and drinking party with lots of singing and chants.

          I had fun!

My point was that it really depends on what you're used to.

Like I mentioned earlier, Americans are used to getting our sports excitement about every 30 seconds not every 10-15 minutes.

We are used to clear possession games where it's my turn and then your turn to score.

From what I've seen, in soccer you fight for possession at least half the game.

I do love to see a good play no matter what the sport is and have seen some really good plays in soccer - via highlights.

I completely agree. We want fast action, not strategy leading to mostly nothing much over a span of time I would like back most of the time. As for golf, people only watch that like, so I can see only a few people falling asleep, most just don't tune in or turn the channel before being bored to death. However, nothing in my opinion tops the grossly, pointless monstrosity machine that is Nascar, that keeps churning out bad sequels like a bad movie series. I respect REAL racing such as Grand Prix and Indy car as well as all of the AMA and European motorcycle circuits. These have twists and turns and curves of all varieties and involve massive skill as well as split second reflexes to traverse their courses, while Nascar involves a militaristic pace of Left, Left, Left, Right, Left! (The right being out of the pit) I don't even bother turning on the race because I would be asleep within the first 5 laps.
Guess it's all in your preference.

Three hours for a soccer match.

That is a lot of injury time.

          A match could, theoretically almost last 3 hours. 2x45 + 10 minute injury time + 15 minute break = 115 minutes.

          2x15 extra time + 5 minute injury time + 5 minute break = 40

Penalty shoot out = 20 min. In the League, week in, week out, a match is x 45 minutes with injury time usually between 3 and 5 minutes.

          115
          30
          20
          ____
          165 min

So, not quite 3 hours but not far off the mark.

        BOWLING

        Bowling is not a sport.

Its a buddy/family outing past time that got its own league.

Any sport that you get better at by the amount of alcohol you drink is not a sport.

        BASEBALL

Is like people who like watching a chess match.

Its chess with a ball a sunflower seeds.

        SOCCER

Foot jugglers..., if I want to see juggling, I'll go to the circus.

People juggling a ball doing a Irish jig dance.

Its like baseball, except at a faster pace, a chess match of dancers.

Soccer, jesus christ, bunch of guys running around with not much else happening, few scoring opportunities, no contact, no hands.

Hell, you can't even body up on someone without a red card.

Have you ever seen people doing hacky sack? ZZZzzzzzzzz

Now MAYBE if there were world class Olympic sprinters matching and breaking sprint records with a ball in front of them..., ....maybe...,

        RUGBY

Suit up a rugby player in a football uniform and have him crash into a football player, watch 75% or more of their league go to the hospital, disabled, maybe permanently.

Although I don't like Hockey, it has what football , basketball and boxing have the potential of being.

Low quality of boxers, trainers and talent is why the sport suffers.

GOLF, CRICKET, LACROSSE, WATER POLO, HAI ALAI, all for people who like watching chess, or that watching grass grow is a sport.

Suppose I am being a bit harsh on Lacrosse , water polo, hai alai and cricket..., its simply BADMINTON and VOLLYBALL on steroids.

POLO would be cool if it could be played like hockey and/or football...,"....see if you can hit the ball if my horse crashes your horse, or I jump off my horse and take YOUR horse by knocking you off..,"

POLO with bulls or steers instead of horses would be interesting, provided they are allowed to crash each other.

Or POLO with a wild horse or steer with their gonads tied up, you kidden me, tellin me THAT would'nt be exciting?

Everyone would tune in to see whose going to the hospital next, not IF but a question of who.

PM me for a JV on my new sports league creation. Limited time offer. My contact info, which will be limited to a few chairman, if accepted, is The13thWarrior@supergenius.com.LMAO

I once detested football (soccer) as well. That is until I tried it out as a niche for one of my websites, and it helped to pay for the house I'm in now. The Worldcup is probably more popular than 10 of our Superbowls combined. And I had no idea that it was anywhere near that popular until I got a huge check in the mail from a website I had forgotten about.

Needless to say since then I've been learning everything I can about the sport. And there's a lot more strategy used there than you'd think. And if you know enough about it, then you probably could find an exciting moment every 30 seconds to a minute.

So I guess it just depends on how well you know the sport.

By the way - I've tried sleeping during bowling, but could only manage sleeping in 30 second intervals for some reason.

Congrats Gary on your success with soccer.

      It is the world's game.

I've actually seen enough whole games in person to form an informed opinion on what constitutes excitement in that sport.

I've watch the fans as if they were in a lab.

IMHO the only people who would find something exciting - every 30 seconds are...

      - people who get excited watching the players fight over possession of the ball 50 yards from the goal - where half of the game is played.

      - the players actually playing in the game

      - The coaches

Every wonder why they do all that singing and chanting during the game?

Ain't nothing happening in the game until the ball gets within 30 yards of the goal and someone has very clear possession.

Counting corner kicks there are only about 20-25 moments total- combined for both teams.

Nothing personal to anyone that loves soccer but it just does not have that many exciting moments for people who grew up on something else.

I do love the soccer highlights almost as much as the baseball, football and basketball ones because a good play is a good play in any sport.

Sports that I find so boring they put me to sleep?

Golf is easy to nap to. Don't really watch tennis, but I would rather watch that than Baseball. Talk about a boring game!

Hockey is brutal on my eyes because I can't keep up with the puck. Got into basketball this season, was surprised how exciting it can be.

American football is my sport. Love everything about it, and I hope we do have a season this year.

I used to hate cricket, thought it was the most mind numbingly boring game imiginable. Then my daughter became a County cricketer and I had to start going to matches. I eventually learned how it worked and was very surprised by how exciting I found it!

I love to watch golf! This is terrible to admit, but I quite often fall asleep watching my hometown team the Steelers. I guess I just get so relaxed?

I do not like to watch baseball...it is a major snooze fest for me. It is even worse on the radio.
