I am not one of those who considers freedom free. I do my part to try to keep our country free at home -- but I have never been to war - never served in the military.

I want to thank all of you who have served or are doing so now. It's not our politicians that keep us free - it is YOU. I am damned proud of each of you brave men and women.

Thank You for my country.

      Whenever I hear/read someone say/write "This is my country", I always hear/see that as meaning that the speaker/author means they belong to that country. Not that the country belongs to them.

      It doesn't matter which country they're referring to. Could be the USA, the UK, Australia, Canada or even Albania. The speaker/author is saying that they believe in the ideals and values that their country stands for.

      Edit: Almost forgot.

        In my 38 years of living, I have not once heard any of my grand parents, great aunts etc. refer to England as "my country". As a matter of fact, I have never heard a single English person ever refer to England as "my country", not even Winston Churchill.

              But he did say it and I'm sure he's not the only English person to do so. So, it's not a "yank" thing.

              Not as pigheaded as it sounds to invade a holiday thread and make an issue over people having pride in a country.

              And don't say you weren't. We BOTH know that's BS. There will be plenty of time for addressing what is wrong after the holidays.

              Most of us love this land - even though there are those who don't want us to own any of it anymore. There may be a time our military men and women set out to deliver it back to us. Respect that. For just this thread, keep your peace and respect that.

                Bravo, you're not making any sense. A country is the people - it's not just a piece of land.

                If you don't feel part of a larger community or share a sense of belonging, that's your problem. And no doubt you can find an outlet for those sentiments elsewhere - but hijacking a thread like this to spout off is just crass. I'm actually embarrassed on behalf of my fellow Brits.

                I wish a very happy July 4th to everyone in the US. And yes, Sal. We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to those who have served and are still serving in the military.

    My mother worked as a local national for the U.S army hospital for nearly 20 years. I grew up with Americans.

      You also called the sentiment corny, medieval, stupid, pig-headed and pathetic.

      While I might agree to the use of some of those words to describe strong nationalism, I don't think any of them fit when applied to patriotism.

      I certainly didn't take it as anti-American. If it had seemed intended as anti-any-country in specific, the comments would have been deleted. I took it as questioning the spirit, which is felt by people in many countries throughout the world.

    Now that a certain somebody has been banned, perhaps this thread can get back on track.

    My wife and I went to our first fireworks of the season tonight and they were great! I love fireworks. Last year it was pouring rain. They still shot some off, and we were right there soaked to the bone, but they saved some from last year to add to this year's show. We'll be at another show tonight, and another in about two weeks.

    Happy 4th to all my fellow citizens, and for everyone else, have a great day just the same!

        Sounds great! We had family and friends over for a BBQ too. Then I just live a block from the river and the city shoots them off from the river walk trail. We just walk over and get front row seats. The city puts on a great show every year, and it didn't disappoint this year. One more show to go on July 16th.

They still shot some off, and we were right there soaked to the bone, but they saved some from last year to add to this year's show. We'll be at another show tonight, and another in about two weeks.

      Dennis it sounded like WW10 here last night
      Between the towns fireworks and my neighbors fireworks, my widows where rattling. Made for an incredible display though.

    I never thought a Happy wish could get so distorted, LOL.

    Tonight for me it is a campfire cookout on a private Island in the Delta (California). Hot dogs over a campfire, watching the fireworks in a private place with the dogs running and swimming and the merriment of my niece, her boyfriend, and my ex brother-in-law.
    Last night I just sat out front and watched some pretty kewl fireworks going on all over. Our electric went out two nights in a row all over this neighborhood so it's been nice and dark to watch them. Walked around with the dog a bit and stopped and talked at all the gatherings out front of homes - people took to the streets to party together when the lights went out. I'm thinking it was a better holiday for everyone because they did. Go figure.

      It was kind of weird where he was coming from because in Spain, it's even more common to talk about "mi tierra" (my land) than in England.

      Maybe he's on a Spanish forum right now asking the same question

      That sounds really nice, Sal.

      My son, my father, and I are going to grill and then watch the fireworks from the comfort of our backyard.

      It's almost always storms on the 4th of July in South Florida so I'm hoping it will stay clear until after the fireworks.

    Wow. My niece didn't tell me the fireworks we were going to see on the island were the Hilton family's fireworks. We were right across the delta from them. They put on a great display. Had some very unique works. There were other firework displays at varying distances from us - they were going off in several areas and we had a 360 view of everything. It was a great evening. Hope everyone else's was kewl too.

            Guess that made the island the best of both worlds

            We did a little target practicing and bass fishing then grilled some hotdogs and chili. A family that works on the island came up to around our spot to watch Hilton's fireworks. My niece's boyfriend had a huge box of the best legal works you can have out here and he gave several to the family (the ones that last for 4 minutes change sparkler patterns about 10 times and go about 8 ft high) We had more fun watching those kids reactions to those fireworks than anything else we did that day. They were hilarious - and very excited.

        Some punks waited until after midnight to light firecrackers (tons) down on the shoreline below here (Sunday) and then (Monday), just as I was dozing off, they lit a cherry bomb right below here - I swear it sounded like it was right under the building but I couldn't see anybody down there.

        So, I am glad it is over.
