Interesting way to monitor employees -- wow!

Kinda big-brotherish.
Seems to be new... short animated video does a great job at explaining the details.
Wouldn't be surprised if this is already the norm in some places.

    Interesting really. I think this type of technology is being used more frequently these days. Odesk or some other company allows you to monitor your employees like this.

    I wonder how the employees feel about being watched every single second at work.

      I've always wondered this about the casino employees in Vegas (or anywhere for that matter). They must feel like they are in a fish bowl with all those camera's EVERYWHERE!

      Actually, it quite positive because it enables you to stay focus on work. Limits factors that will distract you from your tasks and most especially allows you to evaluate how efficient you allocate your time in every task. So basically allows you to be more organized and productive.

      Like which one? I have known people from like the top 12 companies(Including one that is supposedly the largest in the world), and have been on multimillion dollar contracts, and never heard of this. I am in another state because they supposedly want more such control.

      They show guy hovering over an employee. You know what happens when they do that with ME? My productivity DROPS!

      I'm not surprised though. One of the films made by CHARLIE CHAPLIN(1936) talks about this!!!!!!

          Yep, 1930's was Henry Fords era, he may have paid his employees well, but worked then to death! Or each employee, worked each day as hard as possible and just wolfed down their lunch to get back on the assembly line.

          But l will never do this, if l pay someone from Elance and he outsources some of the tasks l assigned to him, then good for him, l just want the end product in a reasonable time frame!

            "freedom through slavery"? You COULD say "Work makes one free". In German, "Arbeit macht frei", which was posted in front of at least one death camp in Germany.

            BTW 1984 was written in 1948, so "modern times" predates it.

              Yep, all depends on your perspective, tell someone in a job that "Work makes one free" and they would probably agree with you, but ask someone who created wealth, from scratch, the same thing, they would probably laugh at the statement!

              Or another way of putting it, "work, and multiplying your efforts, makes one free"!

              Person A, works hard for a year, and saves up $5000 which they invest into a 401K, (Super in AU) which will make them well off in 30 years!

              Person B, comes up with a business idea, researches it, and gets a loan from a bank for $5000, (starts off small, online). Then a year later is well on his way to making a fortune, setting up a business, hiring staff, (person A) and making a fortune, within 5 years, instead of 30!

              Yep, figured it was around that time, l remember someone mentioning it in MASH, 1950!

                I'm NOT, and I WASN'T, speaking against work. Being freee takes a degree of work, but just working doesn't make one free.

                Or another way of putting it, "work, and multiplying your efforts, makes one free"!

                  Man - lots of old threads getting resurrected lately!

                  I've always wondered this about the casino employees in Vegas (or anywhere for that matter). They must feel like they are in a fish bowl with all those camera's EVERYWHERE!
                  I work in that environment - and you totally forget the cameras are there BUT you do stick to procedures and do what's expected because you know the cameras are there...make sense?

                  I don't have a problem with monitoring employees. I think it's a necessity for many businesses today. Ever wonder how many people posting here or on Facebook are on "work time"?

                  You can set quotas for some jobs and that sets a level of performance required. For other work you may need to monitor phones (I've seen that done) or web access (pretty common these days) to make sure employees being paid are actually doing work.

                  If you are doing your job and not trying to cheat your employer - there's no reason to worry about "tracking" or "watching" by the boss. If you are looking for ways to avoid work or take advantage, YOU are the reason the controls are in place.

                  In our culture, it's trendy to put down jobs and people who work but it's also a shallow way to look at working. The new theory that we should be allowed to "live free" without any effort on our part to earn our keep is ridiculous. If you don't want to be stuck in a dead end, boring job - raise yourself above that with stellar performance or with education to qualify for better work.

                  Another old saying was "the world doesn't owe you a living" - but that's been replaced with "I'm entitled to have...."

                    That's a bit harsh, l don't want to be a Henry Ford! People can be hired in the Philippines, full time at $250 a month to do a lot of online stuff. And they are very happy for the work and money, and, (from what l have heard) aren't interested in going into business for themselves and knocking off your ideas!

                    The good ones usually get paid above this amount, and their housing prices, etc are much lower than in the US and AU.

                    So it's a win, win, but you are entitled to your opinion!

                    And l am happy that they got the project done in a reasonable time frame, not machine time frame!!!

    I've always had a problem with this kind of thing.

    That's because I'm more interested in what people accomplish than I am in the time it takes them to do the work.

    Payment for time began in the English Industrial Revolution, more than 250 years ago. It was introduced primarily because the workforce that was then available was unskilled, and so by dividing the work into tiny pieces that anyone could do (division of labor), employers were able to get almost as much work accomplished as those who had the skill to do the whole jobs themselves.

    Today, things are much different.

    Whatever complaints there are about employees, the fact remains that they are the most highly skilled (and educated) there has ever been. And therefore payment for time is obsolete.

    I object to paying anyone for their time. I'm interested in buying their skill - nothing else.

    If an assignment takes someone 10 times as long to do as another person, then that's not my problem.

    For me, the work that's required is worth "this much" and I need it by "this date." I don't care if it takes you 5 minutes or 5 days, because I'm paying you for what I want, not for what I get.
