Trying to find a way to help my son.....

My son, who has spent a better part of his middle school and high school days trying to find a way to achieve success with music, will be soon going off to college and it will be sad to see him let his talent go to waste. He is going to go into civil engineering and sadly i do not think he will have time to do anything with music anymore. Is there ANYBODY that can potentially help him on this website that has the ability to spread his music so that it can get him somewhere? Ultimately i think that is his true dream, but he realizes that not a lot of people make it with music. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Why can't he continue his music while he's in college? I know engineering is a demanding field but why not spread his music through live performances at small venues?

Thank you for the quick response sicnarf! He has tried booking shows at places, but where we currently live at there is not much available. And the only spots that are available are currently in very bad spots of our city =( which i really do not want him at. Do you have any other advice?

It once took a lot of risk, or perhaps MANY MANY MANY thusands of dollars. Heck, one RICH guy realized this, and flew some RICH people on his aircraft. When he noticed a lot of them were bands, he started to pick a few people and make them into bands. WHY? Because HE had the money and resources to do it. Many of those bands became VERY successful, and sued him for taking so much.

That isn't true anymore! If you have enough talent, you can do it for virtually NOTHING! You can use youtube and email to promote, and amazon to distribute.

BTW did you hear the story of how elvis presley became famous? As I recall, he recorded a record for his mother! And have you ever seen air-heads? Airheads (1994) - IMDb YEAH it is a stupid comedy, but stuff like that(getting someone to play a demo tape) DOES happen. HECK, DISNEY has a show "lemonade mouth" that is about a band that gets famous that way!

It's all about who you know, If anyone doesn't believe me look at Dr. Phil & Sharon Osborne both would have never made a penny on tv If it was only about talent.

I would suggest to find work as a sound technician in a recording studio, might help put him in front of folks that make music careers.

One could probably name DOZENS of bands that got noticed by playing in a venue(as I recall, that is how the BEATLES started. It is how Michael Jackson started. HECK, it is how the jackson 5 started! )

It is such a popular way of doing it that it is pretty well known. Heck, look at justin bieber! And disney has made a LOT doing that! SURE they are BIG, with lots of resources, etc... But TODAY, that doesn't mean anything NEAR to what it did even 20 years ago.

BTW When I mention disney here, I am talking about like their last formula. Hire cute decent kids for the mickeymouse show, if they were good singers, start them on songs, and even put them in movies. They are STILL doing the same thing today. The only difference is that they start some out acting in movies. Heck, some of those young kids lived a long life, and died famous.

When I said talent, in this case it is to present or to play music. Heck, do it right, and you could attack maybe a half dozen possibilities at once. That is something Elvis couldn't do right off the bat. If you are a TERRIBLE singer, and present it well enough, they might want you as an actor, for voiceovers, or to present others in such a manner, WHO KNOWS. If you DON'T present yourself right, the better they like your song the better your chances.

BTW phil and sharon are JOKES! BAD examples!

Your son sounds like a very practical and realistic young man to me.

Music is a pleasure - not just a path to fame and fortune. I've known talented musicians who have spent most of their adult life following a dream about becoming the next musical sensation. Some of them have a hard life in the real world because they didn't have a backup plan. Some of the best musicians I know play just for the fun of it in their spare time.

I never wanted a music career - but the years of training have given me a hobby that has earned some money, led to great friendships and I've called it "my therapy" for a long time.

By all means encourage his music. Post him on youtube but encourage him in the path he has chosen. You've raised a son with common sense.
