Hello Warriors:

In Hiberno-English (the dialect of English spoken in Ireland), the word "insure" means to to take-out insurance on something, whereas the word "ensure" means to make sure something happens.

However, I've seen many foreigners (that's all of you people ) use the word "insure" where I would use "ensure".

Which do you say?

Tommy.

You are correct - insure gets you a policy and ensure gets you results.

I use ensure and am a damn yank.

I will admit most people do not seem to know the difference here and I could list numerous grammatical errors that are frequently made even in professional publications.

Ensure - to take action designed to produce a desired result even against the natural flow of things.
Insure - to take action that will ensure that, should you lose a particular asset, you will receive compensation. You can only insure against an event that MIGHT happen.
Assure - to take action that will ensure compensation in the event of a loss that is inevitable - life assurance being the most common form.

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.

Totally right artwebster. That's why you take out "Life Assurance" and "Car Insurance" One only may happen, but the other definitely will
