What Causes DVDs To Freeze?

I have an annoying problem that has finally reached the point where I need
some answers.

Here's the story.

I bought a Big Valley collection a while back online. I thought it was a factory
set but it turned out to be home made.

Anyway, most of the episodes play fine but a few freeze towards the end
and just stop dead.

Today, an episode that played fine did the same thing.

My wife saw a little speck on the DVD and cleaned it and we tried again but
it still didn't play.

This usually happens on the last episode on the disk. This can't be a
coincidence.

1. What causes this?

2. Is it the DVD creation process?

3. Is it cheap DVDs that just go bad?

4. Is it something wrong with my DVD player, though this only happens on
these home made jobs.

5. What can I do to fix the problem?

Any advice is appreciated.

PS - I have tried these on my PC player and they also don't play there.

Dry Ice...j/k

Try cleaning the disk and it's also a good ideal to have a cleaning cd/dvd to clean the
player.

Might be some dust or scratches in the DVD. Usually, people who burn home made DVD's use cheap quality blanks which tend to warp as time goes by.

Yes i agree with Michael Mayo and JustinDupre..dust is a main cause for cd/dvd to freeze while running..have it regularly cleaned by appropriate cleaner, Good Luck!

Probably the DVDs are damaged - the last episode freezing hints at this. DVDs are being written on from the inside to the outside - cheap blank DVDs aren't properly protected so oxygen can enter from the sides and the metal inside the DVD is being oxidized.

See if the DVD is discolored at the very outside.

If it isn't you can try copying it in your computer and rescue as many data as possible, try different DVD drives.

I've had this happening several times, this is why I tend not to burn DVDs anymore, hard drives are just cheaper and last longer nowadays - with a streaming box I can then watch the movies on a television.

Isn't a hard drive a dvd type disc?

I'm talking about the hard disk drives - the normal thing inside your computer. You can get 2 terabytes for around 80 bucks if you want decent quality (Western Digital or Seagate).

DVDs and CDs are optical - Hard disks are magnetic.

Now-a-days not much of an advantage. DVDs, CDs, and BlueRay are all but dead. I think you are going to see more laptops come to market without optical drives.

I think the future is going to be memory based storage. No hard disk, no optical drive. This will make for thinner, lighter, faster laptops with longer battery life and so on.

Just my opinion.

I think you're on to it.

The memory based storage should be removable , to put in another device for viewing, like if you want to show a movie or music you own in your relatives house in their devices, T.V., music player, computer, media player....,unless that technology already exist.

I'm techno-challenged, I should get a check for my disability.

Well, a magnetic drive is heavier, you can't just give it away as easily as it needs a controller etc, and the cheapest ones still cost 30 bucks or something.

So if you want to sell a medium or give it away, a DVD for a few cents is still better.

IBM tried to come up with a smaller drive, but since the flash memory has become cheaper and more effective nowadays, this drive isn't used anymore today.

Advantage over DVDS?

1. Magnetic be created about 55 years sooner, so EVEN if magnetic were worse...!
2. DVDs could store more.
3. DVDs don't really crash(cheaper and less space in the longrun)
4. Of course, hard disks can last longer and recover better.

Tashi is right, the two are totally different. The ONLY similarity is a sliding head, and rotating disk.

I can only think of two things:

1.) It has some serious scratches in it or..
2.) It wasn't burned properly (The one who burned it to a disc must have used a fast burning speed.)

Those are the usual things that makes me have a problematic burned DVD.

I've had this problem with some of my DVDs, but they were either dirty or had scratches on them. Its a very annoying problem, especially when your half way through a movie that your watching.
