is it real that in US it's illegal to download music for free?

    Yes it is illegal to download music for free. Will you get caught? That's debatable. The few that have been caught and sued by the RIAA owe thousands of dollars for EACH song downloaded.

    The answer is, it depends on the music. There is a lot of music you can legally download for free; and there is a lot of music it would be illegal to download for free.

    US music that is copyrighted and not offered for free is illegal to download no matter where you live. It may not be against your laws, but it is ours. The overwhelming majority of countries on this planet abide by the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works.

        You're kidding, right? Did you miss the battle over the copyright legislation last year? Holy cow. Can't remember the name of it but seem to remember the "Fairness Doctrine".

        And not too long ago in the US there was a scandal because the gov just shut down 84 websites (servers?) over the issue.
