I have decided to venture into the world of affiliate marketing. By profession, I am an attorney. By occupation, I am still deciding what direction to head. I operate legalhelp.org and am constantly working and building up the website. However to generate cash flow, I am looking to start a new website. I have a lot of experience in the "internet industry" with respect to domain names, running ecommerce websites but 0 experience in the affiliate industry.

I think the biggest challenge I see with the affiliate industry is determining the niche of the website that has both good payouts and conversions and at the same time picking a niche that doesn't have massive competition. It seems to me that most of good niches are already dominated by experience affiliates with large advertising and marketing budgets.

Maybe someone here can help explain how a newbie can compete in the affiliate industry.

Thank you and I look forward to participating in this community

Pete's Newbie Strategy Tip above is worth the read.

The best thing that you can do is find something that you know well and that you're passionate about. You need to be able to offer inside knowledge to people and show passion. That's when you will build a great relationship with people and they are more likely to purchase what you have to offer.

Your legalhelp.org website looks like a great resource by the way! You will be able to make money from that faster than starting a new site. You need to build up more activity in your forum - head out to other legal forums with a link back to your website in your signature link.

You need to let people know that your site is a place where people can get their legal questions answered. Go and answer questions on other websites where are asking questions about legal advice with a link back to your site.

Contact local lawyers directly and ask them if they want to list themselves on your site and why it would be worth their time.

When you have a whole list of lawyers on your classifieds you can start charging people to get featured at the top of the list or have a featured listing with more information and images etc.

Also get some ads within your actual forum section - they don't always convert well on forums but it's worth a shot.

Start to build an email list of people that are interested in certain topics. Offer a free guide to, say, those interested domain name registration law and get their email address when they sign up. You then have a valuable list of people and you know what they are interested in so you can market similar products to them.

Welcome to the Warrior Forum! You will get some great advice and tips here!

Thanks for the info Nathan. I have been considering just trying to make money with legalhelp.org however there aren't any great affiliate offers for the legal industry that pay that well. Although everything you said is correct, it would take some time to build up my site to that degree. I was actually looking to get some quick cash flow so I can invest the $ into legalhelp.org and hence me coming to WF.

    Hello, Byalik:

Welcome to the WF. The big challenge in Affiliate Marketing is that so many people are doing it, it cuts down on the profitability. Determining a niche and finding good affiliate products to serve that niche is the first step.

However, the next step is marketing, and marketing online is just as challenging as marketing offline. You need to identify your market and determine ways to reach them with an appealing presentation. There are many ways to market and promote your website, but it all takes time, dedication and determination.

If you can offer unique products or services and present them in a way that stands out from the crowd, you might be able to grow faster, but again, it all takes time. And again, every Tom, Dick and Harriet marketing online is trying to discover the secret to standing out in a unique way, so the challenge is further compounded.

Bottom line: Overnight successes are rare and effective "get rich quick" plans even rarer. It all takes time.
