Sleep Mode or Turn Off PC?

I have heard several people and techies tell me differently.

Will a personal computer last longer if I am constantly turning it on and off to use or just leaving it on sleep mode and on all the time (shutting it off once a week)?

I let my computer go into sleep mode during the day and then shut it down each night before I go to bed.

Sleep mode ******IS****** for all intents and purposes, turning it OFF!

It cools down, slows down, etc... so you get a lot of the minor stress on electronics. The disk and other peripherals power down, sometimes SEVERAL times, so you really don't save anything, and it could be WORSE, with the MAJOR stress on mechanic parts.

Now HIBERNATING IS different! It gets rid of ALL of the minor stress on electronics while it is down, like it is OFF. It gets rid of ALL of the MAJOR stress WHILEit is down, like it is off. It reduces wear and tear on the power up cycle.

And if you are putting your laptop in a bag, sleep or on could BAKE it to death, and hibernating won't.

Of course, computers are like lightbulbs. Leaving them on could hurt them, and powering up or down can hurt them. It is hard to tell what will do YOUR computer in.

Neither one for me, I just shut my speakers off at night.

As long as you have a good computer it works great, been doing it this way for about 5 years (ever since I bought this computer.. LOL) pretty much the only time it was unplugged or turned off was when we were moving.

It actually depends on few factors, I'd say. If you have few applications prepared to work and it takes time to set them up afer turning on the computer it would be better to hibernate the computer instead of shutting it down. It will take like 10 times less time to "come back" from hibernation state than from booting. Just like seasoned said, everything cools down, but it's still under current, disk(s) spin down, cpu speed decreases to few percent but it's working all the time. Many times I think I should shut my laptop down, but in the end of the day I choose to switch it to standby mode cause I do not like to set up everything from the beggining in the morning next day .

Depends on a lot of factors, mostly local.

If you deal with a lot of thunderstorms, or have power outages all the time, or have brownouts or surges regularly, it may be better to simply turn it off.

A few other factors I can think of:

    1. Temperature
    2. Environmental (such as dust)

Can't tell you what is best for your area, you gotta research that on your own.

I hibernate mostly, but I let it get a "good nights sleep" lol, and turn it off completely once or twice a week.

for me dont overdo the sleep mode option....it make you more harm than good... if you dont want to use it for long time, better shut it down..else, sleep mode or standby is okay.. :-)

I guess most of us have laptops these days?? I mean a desktop computer gets hotter and draws more power etc so it would be more important to turn off at least most days.

Actually my laptops do get warm too, my XP laptop got too hot last summer and shut itself off. But I was thinking that laptops are really much lower power consumption and much cooler than desktops.

The problem with turning on and off (lightbulbs too) is the Power Surge that goes through right when turning On. That is usually when a light bulb blows out.

As for power saving, that is using less electric, TVs and DVD players and even my laptop power strip all use power when they are in Stand By and even "Off" (that being where Off is not really Off!). Pulling the plug or hitting the switch on a power strip will save electricity and then also help if lightening is a threat.

I leave mine on all the time. Every so often the router disconnects and I just say 'repair' and it is back on so I guess Belkin recycles or something.

I had a friend who was both a programmer and an electronics tech - he was adamant that electronics like to be on all the time. They are happy that way and he said the danger is turning it on and off as somebody said above.

I believe that for my desk top except I can't help feeling that things have a shelf life and having it on all the time is using the life up faster - but oh well.

My laptop I turn it all the way off and it stays off most of the time - I bring it up weekly for Norton and MS updates - it is really just my emergency back up system.

So - sounds like 6 of one and half dozen of the other.

We could also go round and round another 20 years about whether you should defrag before disk check (error checking/scan disk) or the other way around.

I believe defrag first so it is more organized but this one I will never know - and I know plenty of people who believe otherwise.

I run crap cleaner weekly and restart just to clean out the cobwebs and stuff.

All I know is my PCs last a long time and usually still work when I finally have to upgrade to a newer model.
