That is bloody Genius!
There are some concerns to address like leakage and repair, but the concept is so simple it is a wonder no one thought of it before...

A great idea for the reuse of a material. Imagine if they just expand on the idea and put several bottles in one grid - you've got a skylight and a heat source.

I wonder if there is some natural phosphorescent you could add to make it glow after dark...like a glow stick. I know that's kind of "out there" though...
