There seem to be a lot of dreamers here and in IM in general.

Go out and start a "brick and mortar" then come back and tell me how dreams and second hand news goes.

Theory is great for professors and other academics. Try reality and then get back to me.

Want a small (B&M) business? Try the SBA...Credit companies, where do you think they get their money from?

Don't bitch about things you can't control and never will.
A word of advice, get professional.... and fast.

Is that a rant? (Just kidding)

It's true, dreaming about making huge money online is what entices most of the people to come here. Without any action taken that would be just that, a dream.

      You betcha Jun...it's a rant.

But what I was really ranting about...which I don't do much.

Is the people that come here and completely throw any kind of common sense out the window. Think the Internet is some miracle drug.
It isn't, all it is, is a broader means of communication.

Get some business training at your local community or jr. college.
Hell start a real business in the brick and mortar world.

If you want to dream...dream, if you want to start a business...wake up.

(I don't want you to think I'm personally talking to you Jun...cause I'm not, although it wouldn't hurt to listen..)

I just can't believe what I was reading today....why don't ya just read me the party line...

With all the flashy pages and also the promises of making tons of money with little effort all over, you really can't blame people for thinking that IM is so easy to do.

Then they try it and just quit or reality sets in and they buckle down, learn the ropes and get going.

I have owned and operated some pretty successful brick and mortar businesses and a lot of real estate. I also have college degrees in business.

Yet, at first, even I was a bit disillusioned by how easy it was supposed to be.

Once I got on this forum and "got it"---- that this is just another business that you have to work at, then it went differently for me.

          Exactly...
the bolded I think everyone has been thru (ok...almost everyone)

I did...even after running my own business for many years.

It is indeed the greatest disservice done to working from the computer.

In my humble opinion, it is even more important to work hard and know the pitfalls...just to protect yourself.
Not to mention all the actual logistics/mechanics of running a business on the web.

I personally think, as more kids grow up with the net. it will be less the novelty than it has been.

Hell when I was growing up, it was Dick Tracy type science fiction.

Earlier tonight I was noticing - again - that people keep asking questions like...

            "how do I make $20 a day"
"what's the easiest way to make $100 a day"
"I need $2000 in the next three weeks"

We're used to that here - but I'll never get used to those people who ANSWER with the same pat "do this", "do that"...as if you can off "a solution".

I always want to ask how many of those ANSWERING are making that amount of money themselves. The answers are so "here's all you have to do" that I know most of them are still living for the dream...not in the reality.

Have to admit Kay, that made me laugh, because that's what I mean about the party line.

People recite things from somewhere else, that was heard from somewhere else...etc... ad nauseum.

If someone really wants to know what's up...go do it and don't be afraid to fail...that will teach you more than any amount of triumphs combined.

If your afraid of being laughed at or made fun of, curl up now.

              Just keep steppin onward.

It is people like Jonathan 2.0 mentioned that 'dreamed'... but also faced reality.

If you want to learn something important from someone...listen, be quiet, and thank them. People are more than happy to tell you what they know...trust me...

              well said Kay...

I just read through one of those, poster lays out his failures in IM. Very good post really, but
then come the same old responses from people who probably have not made a dime themselves.

You see those threads everyday, and the response is always the same.

        Jim,

Sounds like your about at the point I get to when I decide to take a little break from here. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to chase you away, but sometimes it just does a person good to get away from "it" for a while.

I think last time I took about a 3-4 week break. Been thinking about it again the last few days. Then again, sometimes just staying out of the main forum is good enough.

It's a thread about "dreamers", right? LOL Honestly, I'm not sure how he'll do. I only know we've lost a lot of games lately and at the very least the kid is fun to watch.

The ironic thing is, we're playing Miami in Miami and they're having a celebration for the Florida Gators National championship team...Basically, it's "Tim Tebow" day in Miami. It isn't often the home team celebrates a player on the opposing team.

Jim - I take a LOT of breaks or I would go completely crazy in here. In fact, if you watch my posts you can tell when I need to bug out for a few hours or days and walk the dog or get into the gem hunting fields. I get cranky and I start losing all empathy - and I have so little of that to start with.

I'm thinking I need a longer break from here myself. I've been more or less called a bitch a few times this week. Not in those words, of course, but you could tell the people WANTED to use that word explicitly. So I might just be MIA for a couple of days or so myself real shortly.

The Wright Brothers were dreamers. So was Albert Einstein. (Despite being told by his teacher “You will never amount to anything.”)

    Walt Disney was a dreamer.

And, so were The Beatles (Even though they were told by The Decca Recording Company in 1962 “We don't like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out.”)

    Thomas Edison was a dreamer.

As was Stephen King who was told “We are not interested in science fiction that deals with negative utopias, they do not sell.”

Then there’s Sergery Brin and Larry Page. When they approached Yahoo! For a merger, they were told to “Keep working on their little school project and come back when they had grown up.” Within 5 years Google had an estimated market capitalization of $20 billion.

    ...

and if they where nothing but dreamers they would still be dreaming.

Well, the wright brothers really only took current technology and theory to build another step onto what everyone knew MUST happen. Dreamers? NOPE!

For Albert Einstein, a lolt of myths were told. We don't even know if t is true. But people speak hyperbole like that ALL THE TIME, and nobody knows the full ability of a person.

As for the beatles? Their music wasn't THAT different from others. Anyone could tell that SOMEONE would like it. Guitars are similar to instruments that have been around THOUSANDS of years, and Guitars have been around hundreds of years. How could they die off just after major improvements were made and started to become popular?

Yeah, thomas edison was similar to the wright brothers. That deal with TUBES was a nice catch though! It started the electronics industry, and PROBABLY created te desire to create the transistor!

I heard someone told King he was a HORRIBLE writer. There are negative utopias that are CLASSICS! A TRUE negative utopia is one like logans run, The Time Machine, I robot. At least they SEEM to be utopias, to a degree. Was Star Trek around then? 1984(written in 1948) was negative, though I don't think that was really a utopia. Maybe they meant utopia in a LITERAL sense, but THEN the word becomes MEANINGLESS in this context.

As for yahoo and google. Google really DIDN'T have much to offer then.

What about the little drink company that was on its last breath? They were NEAR BANKRUPTCY! Their main, and maybe only, product was a knockoff of their major competitors main product. Well, the AUDACITY! They went to the competitor offering the company for $7000. The competitor said NO! Well, this little company made the drinks larger, charged less, and started an add blitz. Somehow they survived and grew and grew and grew. The previously large competitor was almost done for with their main product until they got a large contract with the U.S. government for the military. They grew back. The little company that once offered them the company for $7000? PEPSI! You probably know the other company was/is COKE!

Of course, DON'T forget about the salesperson that would have gotten a huge chargeback, so he QUIT and started competing with the service end. Eventually, he sold the company to GMAC(General Motors Acceptance Corporation). He started it AGAIN, and named the NEW company after himself! The name? Perot Systems! So EVEN when you buy your competitor out, you may STILL have to worry about them!

        Hi Steve.

        Some interesting points.

What I'm saying is that these people (and many others) had a dream (or a goal, or a vision) and they made it come true ... Even though people doubted them, rejected them, told them they were “dreamers” etc.

I guess we are saying the same thing. I am simply saying that those that achieved something people claimed was impossible was KNOWN to be possible. In other cases, like einsteins teacher, that was IDIOTIC!

It turns out, that einstein once said something that vindicated something I once said to some "education experts"! You see, it is said that he did poorly in french. And he DID! *****BECAUSE IT WAS REQUIRED*****! When HE desired it, and saw the need, as I recall, he learned it! I tried quickly to find sites to prove that, but I DID find this bit that is interesting:

But in the entrance exam to the Polytechnic, that he took after only half a year of French lessons at the Gymnasium, Albert had to compete with Swiss graduates who had at least six years of French study. And the statement with respect to the Hebrew language was the realistic evaluation of a 43-year-old scientist who had no use for that particular language and, therefore, no motivation to learn it. Ten years later, the American immigrant was well able to acquire the necessary knowledge to communicate with his new compatriots. Would anyone be surprised that at the age of fifty-five he did not reach the same high level in English as he did in his mother tongue, and had, another decade later, to admit that he "cannot write in English, because of the treacherous spelling?"

If dyslexia is defined as a neurological condition which causes problems translating language to thought or thought to language and therefore presents difficulties with reading, writing and spelling, speaking or listening, Einstein can certainly not be diagnosed with this defect.

The strongest argument that Einstein was not dyslexic is that he mastered the German language perfectly and his ability to express himself in writing and speech showed high skills of comprehension, discrimination and precision.

A different aspect may be Einstein's social behavior. It prompted some specialists to place him among those afflicted with autism, or its milder form, a developmental disorder called Asperger's Syndrome. Children suffering from AS are characterized as aloof and emotionally detached; their socially inappropriate behavior and their extreme egocentricity prevent them from interacting successfully with their peers. They appear to have little empathy for others and to lack social or emotional reciprocity. Other symptoms include motor clumsiness, non-verbal communication problems, repetitive routines and stereotyped mannerisms and the idiosyncrasy for loud or sudden noises. One of the most interesting aspects of their personality is the "perseveration," an obsessive interest in a single object or topic to the exclusion of any other.

Some of the characterizations of AS described in the paragraph above actually apply well to the young Albert as we know him from Maja's and Max Talmey's recollections.

Both Maja and Talmey describe a boy who took little interest in boisterous games and, in general, in his peers, a boy who would concentrate patiently on elaborate constructions with building blocks or playing cards, delve into books and tricky arithmetic problems or play the violin. A sort of glass pane, as he called it many years later, separated him from his fellow human beings. Had such "social phobia" then been classified as a personality disorder, and had his parents and doctors felt the need to 'heal' the boy by making him conform to some norm, Albert might not have become Einstein.
HECK, my uncle never even bothered learning danish until they insisted. NOW, he is FLUENT.

Steve there are also many examples of people accomplishing the “impossible.” Roger Banister for example (who completed to four minute mile). According to many people it was “impossible” and would even lead to death from overexertion. Well - you know the rest of the story.

I heard they once said you couldn't go over 20MPH or you would die, PERIOD! Brought up to fight the idea of mechanical vehicles. It is crazy the theories people come up with. I wonder where that stuff came from. BTW it IS odd, since apparently horses CAN go about 40MPH, give or take.

Still, EVEN TODAY, they don't know what the limits are for the human body. I mean how strong can it get? How fast can it go? What is the limit of movement? How many, and what kind of, calories are needed. The best they can do is approximate and guess based on averages and records. And when you look at the records, they ARE astounding.

    Jim,

It IS a broad means of communication. People communicate their messages effectively here to large groups... In fact think of the power of your own communication here... How many people it will reach over time. What do you want your message to say to them? Because here, over time surely ALOT of people will hear your message. What message do you want to deliver? Looks like "Support Kim".

You are absolutely BOUND to earn money for Kims Kidney when your thoughts go out here...and your link is spread over 500 posts, thats 500 chances for him to get a donation. So posting here can be very meaningful, and the fact that donations come in means that the very simplest action can produce a result for ANYONE.

For me, I am bound to sell a product here and there... and sometimes I change my sig to the warriorallstars... but in any event, the basic stuff taught here at WF is true. If you get your message in front of a target market, you make sales.

I do agree with you that posers need to be taken out to the wood shed, and only experience should be shared, but thats never gonna happen.

For a newby... This isnt a dream, its a reality. Its a place where they can learn, and also offer something in their sig and "earn" for their contributions both by asking provacative questions, and by contributing enlightening answers, they can offer things like article writing, seo services, web design, answering service, VA services...or whatever it is...and their dream can become a reality, they can put themselves in business marketing services to other business people, or products in places like the Warrior forum...Appointment setting services are another of a valuable thing to offer here... and virtually ANYONE CAN DO THAT!

Call me an optimist... but I believe reality is that the dream is real, and can be for anyone. For another instance, you could tie a note around a dogs neck and send it to enough doors advertising a mobile service and someone would call you back. Not rocket science. Basic making money ideas work if people do..., that means dreams can become reality.

Dont blame you for the rant bro...Dennis makes alot of sense. I hate it when I do that. 25% of my posts make me cringe. This one probably will. You arent alone.

I think Im ranting now too... lol.

I feel dreams are necessary because that is what keeps us going.. earn big bucks.... dream car......dream house.. dream job....
however whatever it is needs to be backed by solid plan and hard work.
also reality check is absolute necessity at times.
because you can dream as big as you want... but if it is not practical or not based on reality then chances are it wont be achieved.
    that applies to us mortals.......
as far as achieving the impossible.... well.... that is true... there are lot of people in history who did the impossible against odds...
but everyone should remember they worked for it....they were ready to give more than 100% to achieve the impossible.
and keep it mind. impossible is a relative term these days. what is impossible today most probably be possible in the near future.
