AMD is actually FAR older than many think. They were only quietly waiting for something like this. They were one of the competitors that Intel picked to handle supplying the 80286 whle Intel tried to obliterate the market. They made a MAJOR mistake with the 286, which was really easy to fix, and their new processor, the 386, didn't really live up to the performance of the other major releases. Intel then tried to destroy all of the competitors when they tried to exercise their rights and talents. They fixed the 286 bugs and created CPUs that were better than the 386. AMD was the ONLY real survivor. I think IBM was the only other company to survive, but they stopped making the chips.

AMD and Intel have been kind of competing for the 80x86 market ever since. Most now think that AMD is a LITTLE behind. I estimate, from what I have seen, that core for core, the highest AMD is a LITTLE better than the i5. That means Intel has like ONE processor, the i7, that is ahead. Of course, on a CPU to CPU comparison, I think they may roughly be equal, or AMD might be ahead. They are generally about as compatible. AMD is often a bit less expensive. MOST companies probably have computers with EITHER processor.

Well, if you're a gamer, I suggest you look at the whole package (including the brand of laptop you're buying, since it's much harder to upgrade it with a cooling alterations and some brands have more faulty laptops than other ones) like the video card and ram.

A while back, the AMD processors ran really hot and had overheating problems in some laptops, but I don't know about now. I have an Asus with an i7 in it and I've been really happy with it, but it runs really hot (I hear the new batch of i7s are better). I'd say looking at all the specs and reading up reviews on the laptop itself rather than basing your purchase on the CPU itself.

    Hope that helps!

    Hello,
I always see an amd computer about $100.00 bucks or less than an intel, when it comes to a long term purchase I always go with the better choice and that would be intel.

I really think it's worth contemplating to be honest.

It's not like each differs dramatically and I'd struggle to tell you what the differences are anyways.

I've personally opted for AMD for the sole fact they are cheaper.

For high end functionality, Intel is slightly better. For most uses, AMD is good enough.

With various benchmarks, the fastest AMDs DO get up to i5. Frankly, I never saw the heat problems you guys talk about. I only went from the i486 to the K1(?), and the last couple families, but they were actually billed by many as relatively cool. It was the CYRUS that ran hot, which is one reason it DIED!

My current laptop runs VERY fast, has little noise, the fan barely runs, and it is STILL cool! I saw a test at tomshardware that wasn't favorable towards heat towards AMD, and am surprised. I'll keep an eye out. I never saw such a problem.

I recommend AMD because for the same price you get something a lot better
than if you would of spent the same amount on a Intel.

Intel has all the top speed records right now. Just google "cpubenchmark" to see detailed charts by Passmark. AMD has excellent cpu's that will save you $ if that is what you desire.

It says Intel is worse off than I thought! YEAH, Intel CAN BE faster, but AMD has FOUR families that are mixed in with i7!!!!!!! I claimed they had ONE that beat the i5!

So AMD IS still nipping at Intels heels!
