Vancouver has long shown up on on lists of the best cities in the world too live in. Frankly, such ratings have always struck me as too starry eyed. Now, something closer to the truth emerges:

    But I really liked how Jackie Chan used Vancouver for the movie background set of "Rumble in the Bronx...

    The snow-capped mountains in the background looked great in the boat chase on the Hudson river...

    BC...NYC...what's the diff ?

      Rumble in the Bronx...that title comes up a surprising amount. I used to be friends with the producers (line producers) of that movie. Basically they read, "Feature Filmmaking At Used Car Prices" then became movie producers, I kid you not.

        Someone I know just moved out there recently and I have to say it all looks quite nice to me.

        I can't see any downside to living there.

          There are lots of upsides, eg quick access to scenic places and wilderness, lots of Asian food shops, and much more. The main downside to Vancouver and BC as a whole is that it is formidably expensive, especially real estate. I would add that I am not impressed with Vancouver's civil engineering -- they truly blew some tremendous opportunities to create stark, pedestrian-unfriendly clusters of shiny glass buildings. I wish they could have referred to European cities for urban design rather than Taipei (lol).

    Expectations, competition, and criteria are DECREASING! That means that the REAL absolute validity of opinions on such things is decreasing. SAD, but true. Low crime USED to mean like practically NO theft, abductions, kidnappings, etc... TODAY, a "low crime" place can be very dangerous. Where I am now may not be considered a high crime area BUT, according to realtors.com, my car is FIVE times as likely to be broken into! My chances of getting mugged are FIFTEEN times as high!!!!

    Shinny glass buildings in a major earthquake hazard area? Kewl.

    It's no different than the NW in the US, TB - anywhere that is beautiful area, the rich are moving in and forcing out everyone else. I know several resort areas out in the NW I would love to live at, but am going to need either a very wealthy husband or a few product extra mega successes to do it. I'm not willing to live in the dormitory housing they have for employees in those places now because employees can't afford to live near work anymore in resort towns. Very reminiscent of the housing for migrant field hands at farms. Guess the whole world is going to go that way before too long.
