I've only been a producer (the useless person who organizes, pays out, then hopefully has money to collect later), but here are some things:

    -- Good lighting.
    -- Lots of close-ups
-- Keep backgrounds simple. Elegant effects can be achieved with minimal decor.
-- Shoot with film instead of digital
-- Take lots of photos. Increases the probability that some will turn out well.

If you want tutorials, try YouTube.com of course. Ehow might have good stuff too, eg:

    "Film instead of digital?!?"

I was feeling you up until that point lol
Film is EXPENSIVE and basically obsolete now
and as long as your digital camera is 10 mega pixels or more the human eye can't tell the difference...

They don't even make any new film products anymore... it's ALL digital

It may be expensive, but not obsolete (almost obsolete). The human eye can still tell the difference. Digital still doesn't look as good as film. Revisiting this, I guess it is getting harder to find anyone who still shoots in film, never mind places that still develop it.

I'm not a professional photographer interested in quality or artistic effect, so shoot with digital cameras myself. The best photographer I know -- Robin Campbell -- still shoots in film with a WWII camera, but actually makes his living as a documentary director mostly shooting in video, lol.

There have likely been advances that I haven't been privy to. Stuff we shot in DV still looked flat and lacking in depth. That said, I was impressed with how good the digitally shot film Apocalypto looked.

Holy cajole, I'm way out of date, lol. This is not photography per se but films shot digitally. Technology has advanced:
