Do You Answer Yourself?

Ok, so I spoke with my Psychologist (who's also a great friend). He suggested to get rid of my anxiety, I need to release energy by talking to myself. And not just talk to myself, but have full-blown conversations with myself to discuss the issue.

It's nice to have a green card to talk (and answer) myself, but I'm a pretty conservative person. So, what would you say if we were talking and I said, "Excuse me for one moment." And started having a serious discussion with myself?

I want to know so I can prepare myself for what others will say.

I have long rambling conversations with myself in when driving in my car... whilst my better-half stares out the window, perhaps regretting breaking up with Jimmy O'Donnell many years ago and sinking her talons into me.

Frankly, anyone who talks to his or her self is a complete nutcase. Sorry, but that is a fact.

    I agree David

Yes I thought you would, but trying to get this lot in Warriors OT section to agree with simple common sense is like banging your head on a brick wall.

Tell me about it! They are all raving loonies.

OH, I know that my friend, take that Christie Love - now, have you ever seen such a pretty face? But, Oh my, talk about weird!

I have noticed, and I agree she's a real stunner, but some of her posts! Well, the mind boggles.

Talking about boggles, what about Thomas?

    HIM!! Words fail me.

Anyway I'm off for a coffee, can I make you one?

    Yes mate.

I want to give you a two-thumbs-up kudos for this..but then I had a thought...if she doesn't care what other people say then it's kind of like trying to answer a rhetorical question

Hmmm....could it be that some people don't take time to talk to themself because they're too busy listening to other people's voices in their heads?:p

Of course, since I can be a chatterbox and spend lots of time talking to other people..why shouldn't I talk to myself too? Heck...sometimes conversations with myself are more stimulating

You have a problem - and the cat is stupid? LOL!

I didn't realize how much I talked to myself till my son was visiting and said "who you talking to" - to which I quickly replied "the dog".

I do mutter to myself, but no longer talk out loud as I got into an argument with me, and I lost. I don't recommend it as I was traumatized for minutes.

    Christie,

Glad to know that I'm not totally nuts!
    ( right ! )
I hash out problems by talking to my self and then playing devil's advocate. I also write out what's bothering me. Write letters to those whom I am having problems with, or need to say something but it's not possible to confront ( they're dead or other issues ).

Also, writing with your non-dominent hand will bring out deep emotions that you never knew you were suppressing. Excellent for dealing with past trauma.

That took a lot of courage to post this. Most people think that those who answer themselves is a sign of schizophrenia----I never thought so, and felt it was a healthy tool.

    thank you!

Christie - speaking things out loud helps to remove mental blocks.

When I was teaching writing, I would tell my students that if they couldn't think of how to write something, they needed to talk to themselves outloud about what it was they are trying to write. This technique of organizing thought helps because speech is innate (instinctual) and writing isn't. But it also helps us get around to what we are really thinking on deeper levels. Most people wonder why shrinks get so much money for just sitting and listening to people talk. Sometimes someone has some illnesses that can only be diagnosed by listening to a person's perspectives, but a lot of times those with only mild everyday aggravations will discover the answer on their own if they talk long enough about it. The perception that people are crazy if they talk to themselves isn't always right.

I have been known to talk to myself quite a bit - usually when I'm trying to figure out a logical schematic for a report. I do this while walking because, as Socrates well knew, walking keeps the blood flowing and is good for creative thought. Needless to say, I walk by people at times while I am just literally chattering to myself. They can't see the finished result of the monologue. When it's brought to my attention, I usually blame it on the dog. The dog likes the "attention". LOL.

People will think you are nuts. So what. Most people aren't smart enough to know what nuts is, or are too nuts to have a right to judgement anyhow.
Rattle away - and if anyone says anything - stick you thumbs in your ears and wave your fingers at them and blow them a nice raspberry. They might not think you are any less nuts, but you will feel pretty neat afterwards. Trust me on this one. LOL.

lol I do this all the time myself, I used to think it was a sign of crazy-until I realized I would end up getting alot less done-and making alot less $$$ if I didnt.

I now speak to myself all the time-when Im planning out a campaign, working on a project, anything really.

What your really doing, is learning to speak to your subconscience mind. You often already know things your unaware of.

Or I might just be crazy, But Im crazy and banking =D so its all good.

You're right. This is the exact reason for starting this in the first place. I'm trying to reprogram my subconscious thoughts as well as conduct better planning methods.

So, contrary to what most people believe... I'm not crazy. Remember, I said I'm quite the conservative type. This is all new to me, but whatever will help me reach my goals faster, without allowing my (other half) block my progress, I'll do whatever it takes, even if it involves talking to myself on occasion.

The simple murmuring after being scolded is one example of talking to one's self. Isn't it funny? But the effect is calming because the mere fact that we cannot fight back with the one who scolded us, self ramblings or murmuring is already enough, not to forget the showing of funny-face

I actually do this quite often. The way I do it is called Automatic Writing. I will open a new document in microsoft word. the first sentence is a questions. example "should I take this job?" the rest of the page is dedicated to answering that question. I write exactly what I'm thinking and I don't hold back. Most times more questions pop up and I have to answer those as well. their are times when I will right for an hour straight without stopping. but at the end of the session, I go back and re-read what I wrote cause most time I don't realize what I write. After re-reading I find that I've answered all of my questions well. I usually feel better after doing this. This pertains to anything, questions about the day, life or just simply writing the events of the day and my reactions after the fact. It's important to have this conversation with yourself to regroup.
    I hope this helps friends

I never answer myself. I only talk at myself never allowing my alter ego the opportunity to interrupt my soliloquy, which I do engage in very often and is quite normal and a sign of higher intelligence according to many professional psychologists. It's not the same as someone who talks to a person they see and think is there but really isn't. So, don't let the simple minded haters tell you you are mental. They're just jealous of your higher intellect. There is nothing abnormal about thinking out loud. Just try to do it when you are alone because most people are not very advanced and will misjudge you.

days to get ready and then I did. It was radically different than
the other 100 times I had tried and failed to quit. There was something
in the decision process which took away all desire to smoke. Once in
awhile I get a weak urge to smoke and I just "remind" myself that I no
longer smoke and it passes. If I could bottle that process I'd think I'd
be a zillionaire in no time. If you could bottle it, I'd buy it.

When you hear someone telling you what YOU can't do, they are usually talking about what THEY can't do.

I talk to myself all the time. They say, "just don't answer" but I never can have a conversation and not answer myself. So, I guess I would not judge you if I saw you doing the same.

    Good luck with that.

By nature all the people have this self-conversations. We ask ourselves many questions and most of the time we have the answer, also.

Chances are that the person who views you talking to yourself probably also talks to themselves. People who live alone tend to talk to themselves out loud frequently. If you shrug it off as simply "having fun living" you'll put a smile on their face and probably yours, too.

maybe you can excuse yourself then go to a very private place and talk to yourself. Otherwise, you can also try to explain to your friend that you need to talk to yourself so that he/she would understand.

It is definitely OK to talk to yourself. It is even OK to answer yourself. It is when you say Huh? , that you're in trouble.

    This begs the question...

When you "talk to yourself", who is answering?

And, even more... who's in charge of YOU?
    Who's in control?
YOU? OR... YOU? And, who the hell are you anyway? And, what are you doing in my head?
Or, what am I doing in my head? What are you doing in my head??? What am I doing in your head???

as long as you don't answer in another voice, I think it is okay to talk to yourself.
