PDF Cover Graphics Problem

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

I hope that you can give me a time-efficient way to accomplish the following task.

Over the years, I have accumulated many pdf ebooks and would like to sell quite a few of them on my blog.

I need to place the cover graphics on the product page of my blog so folks can see the cover image of each ebook.

Here's my problem:

1. I need the url of each image of the pdf's for advertisement on my blog. PDF's do not allow a the right-click "save-as" choice when trying to copy the cover image and save it to my desktop so that I can go to Photobucket and upload it. Then I'd have a url to use.

2. I would also be able to edit the dimensions of the image in Photobucket so each image will be similar in size. Then I'd also have the url to upload to my blog.

Is there a time-efficient solution to what I'd like to accomplish?

Thanks for your time!

If you are running a MS Windows pc then you can do the following.

Open the pdf and have it at full screen so that you can see the whole graphic. Then do the following:

    Alt Print Screen

Then go to: Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Paint >> Control V (Paste)
Select the Rectangle Cutting tool and highlight the graphic you want.

    Control C (Copy) >> File >> New >> Control V (Paste)

Save the paint image as a jpg file and you can load it into Photobucket and start editing it there.

    Hope that helps

For what it is worth, I was going to say the SAME thing DianaHeuser did. IF you use ALT prtscn, you can ALSO maybe adjust the window around what you want to copy, and have it cropped right BEFORE the copy! Other than that, like I said, DianaHeuser gave a way that works.

There ARE programs to make it a bit easier, but I don't recall their names, and some don't work with post XP systems.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Steve, I appreciate your suggestion and will keep trying until I get it. I'm having difficulty trying to size the images as consistent as possible. Although I'm using the resize feature, it doesn't show that it's now 75x75 or whatever dimensions I'd like to crop it to.

Since I have so many images that need to be sized, it would really be fabulous if I could find a way to make the sizing and cropping much easier. So if you hear of anything that's compatible with W7, please let me know.

    Thank you again.

The SIMPLEST one I have seen puts an icon in the task bar. It then, after clicking on the icon, creates a crosshair cursor that you can drag from one corner of the image to the other. It essentially copies, AND CROPS, RIGHT from the screen. They sometimes can bring the memory image in, but usually bring the screen image in, at ITS resolution. So you usually STILL have to use a graphics program if you want to change the size or resolution. ALSO, realize that increasing image size, or resolution, through such a program, can hurt the appearance and REAL resolution. That is the reason why digital cameras have optical zooming. Digital is smaller, simpler today, and CHEAPER, but it is NOWHERE near as good.

MANY use this technique for programs and web pages that can then change the size/resolution as needed, within that program. I'm sure adobe has it. Word has it. HTML Browsers pretty much HAVE to have it since it is in the spec. They are often much better at reducing than increasing, especially since it is harder to see such detail anyway.

If you DO decide to change the size, save the original unchanged.

I appreciate your information Steve, and yes, all I'll be doing is decreasing the size.

    Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

You can download a free package called Paint Net. It works a bit like Photoshop but it's free and easy to learn.

I would be happy to help you if have problems. Just drop me a PM with your email address.

You are a doll Di! I appreciate the info and am downloading it now.

A funny thing happened a little while ago. After I read seasoned's post, I decided to check my emails before Googling for some easy graphics program.

I am a member of "Giveaway of the Day" and amazingly, got the following as today's giveaway:

Giveaway of the Day - free licensed software daily. BatchInpaint - BatchInpaint is a batch version of a popular software Inpaint.

I rushed to download it only to find that it's not something that I could understand right off the bat. This Paint.NET sounds more of what I'm looking for.

But I am hopeful that someone with techy skills can use it right away. The site just requires you to download and install before it expires.

Plus, even if you can't use today's giveaway, sign up anyway since they offer some "good stuff" every once in a while.

Going back to check on my download...

Much of the same as others.
I'd open the PDF if your a PC user press the PrtSc key next to the F12 key this will copy your screen as an image to your clipboard.

Then i would open a program called Irfanview
when open hold down the Ctrl key and press the V key, this will past the image into Irfanview.

From here you can resize and crop the image.

I made a quick video showing how to resize & crop with Irfanview

    prtscn does the SCREEN!

alt+prtscn often does the focused form! It seems a minor distinction, but uses less resources, allows better control of initial cropping, and could give better resolution.

Yes Paint Net is a great substitution for Photoshop...

If you have many images and a friend of Photoshop, you can reduced images in bulk by recoding an action...

    Hope this helps.

    Good luck.

Thank you colll999. I'm working with this one because it has a multi-image sizing capability and shows the dimensions right off the bat.

That would make it faster (I think). But wouldn't I still need to open the pdf's one-at-a-time in order to get the cover image from each?

I've Googled "resizing many photos at once" and came up with a forum from 2005 and was trying to follow #5 without much success:

Resizing many photos at once - Steve's Digicams Forums

I'm at the part where it opens the thumbnails but then I'm confused 'cause things don't look exactly like JimC's image. I've searched for more recent sites but am at a loss.

Are you familiar with the multi-image feature?

    Thanks!
