In about an hours time, I'm heading down to Porthleven to do a spot of photography, why?

70mph winds here this morning, coming from the south straight off the Atlantic Ocean.

Porthleven is always a good spot for some big wave action. Many years ago when I lived there, there was one storm (1988/92?) which I recall very well when there were 100' waves pounding the harbour to smithereens.

A little further down the coast is a small village sandwiched between Land's End and Cape Cornwall - Sennen Cove. I was there in this village the day this particular storm was kicking off in 2008.

If you look at the photo below, see that building on the right? That's the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) building, housing the local lifeboat. From ground level to the top of the roof is about 30' high.

Now look at this wave and have a guess at the height of it!

Back to Porthleven where I'm heading off to as soon as I've finished writing this thread...

    Absolutely incredibly beautiful.

This is partly why the only interest I have in seeing Europe is the UK - and then I will visit Italy and check out the art and architecture.

    In my dreams!

Incidentally I grew up 7 blocks from the Ocean Beach (San Francisco Sunset District).

The waves and UNDERTOW are just as strong but no dramatic big waves like that Porthleven. All the velocity is going on UNDER the water so the only result was an ugly dark ocean (stirring up all the sand).

thanks for sharing your fantastic gift of photography and video.

but are these pictures yours or from a book? They look surreal!

      Not my photos no, unfortunately.

      My storm photos are here...

And if you enjoy just beautiful scenery, some more of my photographs are right here...

Today was a little disappointing, yeah the sea was very rough but nothing spectacular, nothing to shout home about. So I drove from Porthleven this morning heading towards Rinsey Cliffs and the little National Trust car park at the end of the lane overlooking Mounts Bay.

Jumped in the back, climbed into bed and snoozed for 5 1/2 hours with the van rocking and swaying in the wind. Lovely!

Must get the inside finished in the next week, install the new flue pipe next for my wood stove and then a new mattress and new carpet down below.

Soon as it goes through the MOT (Ministry of Transport annual roadworthy test) I'll be heading off to Europe for a 6 month tour covering France, Spain, Portugal, back into southern France, Italy, Croatia before finally heading towards Greece. Thoroughly looking forward to it. I've even got a small inflatable rib and outboard motor in the back with me so I can carry on doing some fishing wherever I end up.

      Cheers!

        So Mark,

Do you have a house down that way? Will you have you computer on your travels?

More importantly will you be back for next Summer when I genuinely will be heading down that way for some fresh caught fish and, err, well, beer I suppose.

        Looks absolutely splendid chap.

A house? You mean one of those rectangular objects built out of concrete? Yrrr'ack! No.

I'm living with family at the moment, long story. Sooner I can get on the road again Richard, the better. My grandfather comes from old gypsy stock hence the hot headed fiery persona.

          Ideal home?...

            Is that right?

I have a number of friends in the traveller community, I helped one out of a spot of bother many years ago and remained friends with them ever since. Extremely nice bunch as well and extremely misunderstood by a vast majority of settled people.

I'd have no problem living in one of those either. That's a Yurt I believe? The rather comfy things Ghengis Khan and his ladies and gentlemen lived in.

Good for you Mark, I expect a travel blog of your travels and presents on your return!

Not on your nelly Fernando. Stuff that malarkey. Not on that reef. The Porthleven reef is one of the most dangerous spots to surf in Europe. Get thrown off your board and chances are you'll be cut to shreds on the sharp jagged rocks not far below the surface.

Good to see you again btw, missed you.

A couple of Cornish surfing videos just for you...
