Please vote if you like/love the Internet

Right now, the US Congress is debating a law that would give them the power to censor the world's Internet -- creating a blacklist that could target YouTube, WikiLeaks and even groups like Avaaz!

Under the new law, the US could force Internet providers to block any website on suspicion of violating copyright or trademark legislation, or even failing to sufficiently police their users' activities. And, because so much of the Internet's hosts and hardware are located in the US, their blacklist would clamp down on the free web for all of us.

The vote could happen any day now, but we can help stop this -- champions in Congress want to preserve free speech and tell us that an international outcry would strengthen their hand. Let's urgently raise our voices from every corner of the world and build an unprecedented global petition calling on US decision makers to reject the bill and stop Internet censorship. Sign now and then forward as widely as possible -- our message will be delivered directly to key members of the US Congress ahead of the crucial vote.

The US IGNORES FAR more laws than it ever creates, and the number is GROWING! Tey ignore the old lws EVEN while they pass a simlar or identical law! Case in point? How about a law passed over a CENTURY ago to get RID of the idea of "too big to fail"? How about laws passed in the 1930s to PREVENT a depression, and make it milder. How about a law passed in the 80s that reduced wild swings in the market?

What do ******ALL****** of them have in common?
      1. They WORKED!
      2. Some were recently repealed, BEFORE 2008. Most of those repealed were repealed in the 1990s, and some even around 2006-2007.(Coincidence????)
      3. They were all IGNORED!
      4. Some are trying to create "new" laws that HAVE to be the same as the old ones to work, and are claiming they haven't even been done before.

HECK, just last friday I spoke with a bank that, prior to 1999, was ILLEGAL! WHY? Too risky if there is a stock crash or some such. I asked when they started, and they said "in the 90s". WOW, they lost NO time! In 1994(PRIOR to when it was legal for them to be a bank), they threatened BANKRUPTCY, and wanted out of BINDING contracts, basically making their ENTIRE business a SHAM! The court alowed them out of the contracts! MAN does that sound like Enron. Enron really only did the same thing, outside of the fact that they bet they would! But THIS place isn't enron!

Even a lot of the reasons the government gives for the internet problems are because they ignore laws on the books for DECADES! Like the ones making chain letters, ponzi schemes, non approved investments, money laundering, and complicity, against the law.

  • Stephen Colbert had a funny report on the SOPA bill the other night - the supporters of the bill are using figures on piracy/counterfeit theft from the FBI, that apparently even the FBI says are not supported by any data or statistics whatsoever - it is just a figure thrown on the table.

I can sympathize with some companies wanting to protect their products from piracy, but this bill will do nothing to stop it - quite the contrary, it will give these companies carte-blanche to censor and sue anyone they deem a threat without due process.

They really need to think of a more viable solution than this. This challenges free speech.

I signed the petition -- knowing full well that our voice means squat. They just got rid of habeas corpus and you think they care if we don't want free speech to get tanked?

The only way to stop this form of legislation is to start recalling and impeaching those who sign unconstitutional bills. Until people get a clue that you need to get rid of offenders immediately, there will be no way to stop them from signing off your freedoms. Petitions are ignored. You didn't get that when the bailout was passed?

Get real and start passing around impeachment petitions instead of stupid little requests to keep your freedoms. They don't care about anything but their jobs, money, and pensions. - So hit them where they live or don't bother.

Thanks Sal and others for trying. I disagree that our voice doesn't mean squat - and even if it is true, I feel we must keep raising it. I appreciated your suggestions on how to make meaningful change - each of us could check with our local representative and see how they are relating to this bill and tel them what we think. In fact - I vow to do that and will report back to you on how it goes.

      MOST IP theft is from:
      1. Reverse engineering.(This is how COMPAQ developed its first PC!!!!!)
      2. Lifting from patents.(TOO EASY!)
      3. Corporate spys.
      4. Trash and hacking.
      5. Given to potential competitors.(This IS, for example, how apple gave info to foxconn, and Intel gave info to cyrix, IBM, and AMD) They have regretted that last one ever since!

Almost NONE comes from the internet, unless it is employees leaking, which happens ANYWAY!

As for digitally pirated stuff? The internet is merely a MEDIUM! It happened BEFORE the internet, and shutting down the internet won't stop it.

ICE can't even do its job! And YEAH, counterfeit stuff can be bad. If the US lowered the price on drugs, it would help a LOT. It is INCREDIBLE how much money is WASTED in development, etc... I once sat next to a guy, on an airplane, that was a skin absorption consultant! IMAGINE! YEAH, YOU READ RIGHT! SKIN ABSORPTION!!!!!! CONSULTANT! So what did he do?

He did TWO things in his job!
      1. He determined how a patch could be made to deliver a given drug properly through the skin.
      2. He acted as an expert witness if companies got sued for infringing on patents.

WHAT A LIFE! He told me about how one time a company sent him patches that turned out to be OLD ones. And he didn't know how they could work, so he had them send new ones. He found out that they worked better, but still not great. He found they worked NOT because of how they were designed, but because they messed up and a solvent in manufacture was doing what THEY couldn't! When the solvent evaporated, as it was designed to do, the patches were WORTHLESS!

He ALSO told me of a company spending LOTS of money to deliver a drug that was later found to be NATURALLY absorbed! So they didn't need his help. His customer was later sued by a company claiming that they infringed, and it was found that they were very different, and the plaintiffs theories were all wrong.

So they pay for his research, writing documents, and travel, EVEN when they don't need it! It THEN has to pass FDA tests. They then SUE, or may be sued, for the technology. and apparently the US is the ONLY one that pays for this. This is just one minor example.
I could tell you about the week before last in MY job, and the hundreds of thousands, maybe MILLIONS, down the toilet. I recently complained to a friend I have that is a recruiter. He is saying he is starting to hear a LOT more complaints from people saying that the customers are not doing anything, and just wasting money.

Anyway, if the US got rid of THAT garbage, people wouldn't go elsewhere. AGAIN though, it predates the public internet!

Counterfeit AIRCRAFT parts? HELL, even counterfeit CAR parts! I wonder how many people were KILLED in accidents made FAR worse because COUNTERFEITERS didn't understand how hoods were MADE to break in a certain way! Just one TINY example! AGAIN, PREDATES the internet!

I have signed the petition and sent it on to others.

I understand what HeySal is saying about things being ignored and to a certain extent I agree. The problem is it can lead to complete inaction if you feel your voice is not going to be heard.

I am from the UK and when I see some of the things that go on in the land of the free (USA) it makes me shudder. Mind you the same applies here at times but at least our Prime Minister had the balls recently to veto us out of a failing political economy called the EURO.

Markup over House piracy bill adjourns after marathon debate - The Hill's Hillicon Valley

Sooo - I guess this will get buried and forgotten?

by Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) and his fellow supporters, who belittled claims the bill would lead to censorship and stifle innovation on the Internet. Still, the delay could add fuel to the grassroots backlash that has been growing online against the bill.
“I am pleased that the unfounded claims of critics of the Stop Online Piracy Act have overwhelmingly been rejected by a majority of House Judiciary Committee members," Smith said.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[5252164].message }}
  • I really don't want to seem like the only guy left posting this stuff...but this is really getting crappy - there is just no other way to put it...does this Lamar Smith think he can sneak this bill through the house over the Christmas Holiday? He certainly thinks so...

Update.... Or not. Despite the fact that Congress was supposed to be out of session until the end of January, the Judiciary Committee has just announced plans to come back to continue the markup this coming Wednesday.(DEC 21st) This is rather unusual and totally unnecessary. But it shows just how desperate Hollywood is to pass this bill as quickly as possible, before the momentum of opposition builds up even further.

How SOPA could actually break the internet
We’ve discussed the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) at some length, but haven’t said much about the serious technical problems with the bill as its written. Depending on how its implemented, SOPA could demolish the cohesive structure of the internet by damaging the core functionality of the Domain Name Service (DNS) system.

It is a little known fact, that the us is getting LOTS of tax revenue from the internet! Other countries are ALSO!

In the US, there is INCOME TAX, from the businesses and employees.
TAX for various licenses that are needed.
TAX for various permits that are needed.
FEES for various services, like street work to build infrastructure.
TAX for the use of various utilities, like PHONE(YES, PHONE! Most internet sites, like Google, Amazon, etc... AT THEIR CORE depend on PHONE service!)
HECK, they added a couple taxes in the 80s, in the US, that NO LONGER have a use, and they are probably STILL there!
FINES for those that DON'T comply.

In short, the government probably gets many BILLIONS of dollars every year for the internet.

FURTHER, A SMALL business may buy what amounts to the equivalent of hundreds of phonelines. It costs potentially HUNDREDS of dollars a month, and the government gets a good chunk of it! That used to be RARE! I worked at like two dozen companies, and only ONE used them! Only ONE! It was RARE! NOW, it is COMMON, and they are advertising them EVEN to HOMES! Granted, most are throttled, and they charge less, and there is less tax, but it is tax revenue due to the INTERNET!

OH, and they NOW have lines that are the equivalent of THOUSANDS of phonelines. the costs and taxes go up accordingly. Such lines may not even exist if not for the internet.

Use cable or satellite? They get revenue from THAT also!

Hell, I recently saw some site that said tax payers had to pay to support airports. I pay like a 25%-50% tax on stuff that is even REFERRED by the airport! GRANTED the average taxi fee is lower, but rental cars? Flights? Some other things? Taxis have to pay a LOT for a special license to pick up people with no reservation at airports. On top of THAT, they pay a fee, that is typically over $3 and sometimes over $5, for EVERY person they so pick up. They ALSO may have a special surcharge on tolls.

Hell, they make an average of like 50% on every gallon of gas you buy.

The government gets LOT of revenue!
      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[5271198].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author seasoned
BTW WHO says the internet is free? I am paying about $115/month for it! I ALSO have a web server that I am paying about $99/month for(Though taxes THERE go to ANOTHER country). This is money the government has taxes on that I would NOT be paying without the internet!

Another assault on the public, and it will keep coming and increase.

These guys( billionaire influence) have pretty much bought up all the media and privately owned radio stations, have you heard the brain dead programming and garbage on there?

I simply run to a jazz station, and IT'S listener sponsored.

The first line of attack, you should know this military veterans, is to kill and disable the lines of communication, the enemy, We the people, need to be herded even more tightly, you see.

So the internet is the next assault for this reason, to control the last frontier of journalism and information, because any journalist worth listening to is going to NOT be working for a company, can't, but will be working for themselves on their own to get to the truth.

Then they need to put multitudes of road blocks, again, for the last frontier of entrepreneurship and freedom and stop any possible "gold rush" potential for the public to join the middle class or exceed the middle class.

They have Billions and Trillions to throw everywhere, to buy ALL the politicians, buy ALL the scientist to have them lie for them, lies in textbooks and history and re-visionist history making, to buy ALL the media, buy ALL 3 branches of government here and around the world, buy ALL the property and land, buy ALL judges, enforcement agencies, etc.,

The assault on humanity is just warming up.

      Why are you surprised?

This country was NOT built on The Constitution, morals and values, another lie and hypocrisy, slavery is what made this country exceed in wealth for the few, they are simply going back to the values this country was started with thats all, THAT is what everyone "says" they want, again, most people have been indoctrinated with failed, lying scholastic knowledge, which is one reason The People consistently get defeated.

They want labor to be even less than sharecroppers.

Why are you surprised about Bankers and Wall Street, the real rulers and power of this country?

They found thousands of bones and dead bodies buried under Wall Street. THAT is what Wall Street's foundation is. THAT is what Wall Street's values are.

It was cost effective for slave traders to work people to death and then simply to replace them..., sounds like a familiar tune the way the tables are turning against labor.

Assault on the Postal Service, 2nd biggest union in America.

The bridges from poverty to wealth are being assaulted, the middle class and middle class jobs, and more assaults are on the way.

They want to lock the worlds population into poverty and servitude , fighting for scraps.

They have trillions to use, money the conned and that they stole, as weapons, too much corruption, too many different directions the attack is coming from, that is how they designed the attack.

      What issue to attack first?

KEEP THE PEOPLE DIVIDED AND CONFUSED,MAKE THEM TURN ON THEMSELVES AND EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING, is that not yet another strategy of war, you military veterans?

      Can't trust your religious institutions,

Can't trust scientist, they need funding and will say anything,

Can't trust the enforcement agencies, they enforce laws ONLY on the small fries, with a few sacrificial semi-big guys for looks,

      Can't trust the schools,

      Can't trust the media,

Can trust products less and less,

      Can't trust the courts,

Too much cancer to save the body, how much cancer you believe that a body can take before the doctor says there is no technology available to overcome it?

Assault in every direction and venue imaginable, and it is just getting started.

You'll only believe it when you see it.

When the "escapes" people run to to be relieved from the worlds problems start getting assaulted, the light may go on.

EVERYONE understands and knows that a flashing red RailRoad crossing is REAL danger, a sign, or lights and sirens from a police vehicle or ambulance is something that cannot be ignored....,

So what are the signs YOU NEED to not just believe, but to KNOW real danger is imminent?

    3. It requires a legal court trial.

That is so much BUNK! American laws do NOT affect foreign companies like this, and a legal court trial by their standard is virtually impossible! I mean tried in THEIR courts by THEIR standards, etc? Sorry, the whole things makes about as much sense as chopping off your arm to cure the appendicitis of someone in another country.

Besides, since you can not affect JUST the company without affecting ONLY that company, then such laws are already on the books, and have been there LONG before the internet. You CAN'T, for example, punish their host, etc... because to do so would punish OTHERS.

Why do people even ATTEMPT such incredibly fallacious arguments?

MMM - you are not the only one. I just spent half the afternoon mailing to websites telling them that there is the third bill (OPEN) and to post it along with SOPA and PIPA on their blackout literature. 3 bills means they are going to keep making different versions until we are distracted enough to miss one of them.

I also tweeted and put a warning about the 3rd bill on FB. We need people to understand there is a third bill so that there will be always someone watching to make sure one doesn't slide through unseen.

As far as Obama - he lied for weeks about his intention to veto NDAA - and then turned around and signed it -- just after a rep made the public comment that it was the administration who asked for the domestic provision to be added in the first place. Nobody in their right mind is going to believe a word out of his mouth about shutting down SOPA until it is actually voted down. Just becuase it's tabled doesn't mean they won't sneak it back in at the first opportune moment. Our reps have to understand good and well that they will be recalled if they allow that to happen. Anyone that is in a jurisdiction where a rep voted for NDAA and isn't signing petitions for their recall should be damned ashamed as well. So far the only state I know of that's on that one is Montana.

We should also be passing out petitions to recall anyone who proposed or sponsored SOPA, PIPA, and OPEN. IF there's a lawyer in the house that can draw up the petitions, I'll be first in line to help them get them out to people in the states with offending reps.

      1. It wasn't meant to target US companies in the beginning drafts - but to add the laws that regulate US sites to foreign sites broadcast in the US

      2. That was the initial excuse given by legislators

      3. It requires a just to receive the complaint and approve or disapprove it.

      Sal -

Isn't the "third bill" the revised SOPA? A few days ago there was a move to remove the blacklist and copyright portions of the bill.

The change didn't get any press or blog attention because everyone is focused on the blackout.

Signed it even though I have little faith in the congress accepting any of this. Not to be pessimistic but, I don't feel like they give a ****.

Who knows HW this thing will go. The media has said they will withhold funding, because they don't like the anti SOPA actions. And I just saw a nice looking, albeit OBVIOUSLY biased and VAGUE, commercial SUPPORTING SOPA and PIPA.

BTW One person mussed that, in swedish, sopa-pipa means trash-pipe, and mused if congress knew swedish!

We, from Europe, don't have to worry about this but it's really sad to see these things going on in US.

It did not go through. But It feels like it would not be the end of the story. More attacks are coming. Big money that want to keep their money intact and do not understand very well how internet works would not leave it along like this. They will try again. Internet is huge power. I am amazed and puzzled by the amount of bad and good opportunities it is able to bring. I believe that there Two possible scenarios of the future: One if pretty scary and super-controlled, possibly something similar to 'Matrix world'. Another possible option is that Internet would bring more connections into the world and allow world become more balanced place. I really hope that this version wins.
