Whitney Houston was great, but Patti's the greatest!!!

Whitney Houston was an amazing, amazing talent...no question about it. But she's gone now...may she rest in peace...finally. But as great as Whitney was, I've always felt that Patti Labelle was the greatest female vocalist on the planet...bar none. Of course, that's my opinion and I'm entitled to it, just like you're entitled to agree or disagree.

That being said, if you haven't already done so, discover and appreciate Patti, before she's gone too...

      I just listened to "I Will Always Love You" for the first time in a very long time. I have to admit, it gave me chills listening to Whitney sing that song. She truly was an amazing, amazing talent. That being said, it still doesn't change my opinion.

    Yes I agree this is totally tacky of the OP. In fact I listened to an interview with Smokey Robinson about Whitney last night and he was saying how much pressure there is being a star and one of them was people saying stuff like who is better, who is up and coming to replace you, etc.

    The greats are all good and one doesn't take away from what another has achieved - nobody is better or worse - only different. I didn't particularly like the genre of either one but I do appreciate the over the top skill that Whitney and others like her have had.

    RIP Whitney.

    The other thing that just pisses me off is dunderheads that come and say 'oh well that's drugs' - what difference does it make now? Does that make her death any less tragic? It's like going to a funeral and saying well they woulda, shoulda, coulda.

    What difference does it make why or how? Death is final. (for now)

      I'm not a huge Meatloaf fan, but I do like a few of his songs. I especially like "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad." While I don't automatically think of Meatloaf when I think of great male vocalists, Meatloaf is nonetheless a great singer!

          But there are different levels of greatness, and whether you were kidding or not, Meatloaf is a great singer in his own right.

            Intentions aside, whether or not any disrespect was intended, this is a tasteless thread. You just don't do things like this when somebody has just died.

            Personally, I loved Whitney's voice. In fact, she had one of the most amazing voices of all time. I wish the writers had given her better material to work with because most of her songs were geared to appeal to the masses.

            I would have given anything to hear that amazing woman sing an art song, something that exists not for the purpose of making tons of money. Yes, I know this is a business but wow, can you imagine her singing standards like:

            "Climb Every Mountain" from Sound of Music?

            Think that wouldn't just give you chills up and down?

            I can't help but thinking that had she lived longer, maybe someday she would have recorded an old standards CD. It might have not sold much, but it would have been something to hear.

            Patti Labelle is great. But right now, to start a thread like this is cold.

            I'd say more but I'll leave it at that.

            Whitney, as a songwriter and musician for over 30 years, you will be so terribly missed that you have no idea.

            I can only help think...what if?

It was a tragic life that didn't have to end that way. I hope that miserable Bobby Brown sees what he's done.

                    Well, like I said, she was essentially a corporate money machine. The industry used her like they do most people. I honestly don't think she had the personality to handle it, thus the drugs. Bobby Brown was the final nail in the coffin. The man is a menace.

                    This whole thing is just so sad, just like with Michael Jackson who ended up where he did also because of the industry and his father.

                    It all just disgusts me to no end.

      Based on her lifestyle the last few years, I can't say that I was shocked. Just like I wasn't shocked to hear about Amy Winehouse. With some artists, you just know that's it's only a matter of time.

    Well, the OP about patti, as I recall, is NOT a good representation of what she does. Based on that, I like what I remember of whitney better. And my favorite rendition of somewhere over the rainbow is...

    This isn't the best representation of his work, but you have probably heard it in movies, etc... The wizard of OZ may be the ONLY movie not to use HIS version. I must have heard at least FOUR movies that used it! "50 FIRST DATES" DID as I recall, SHALLOW HAL did, as I recall, I think a SHREK DID.

    But, as you say, that is MY opinion. I would NEVER declare anyone THE best singer. They are coming out with new ways to represent songs that a WEEK ago may NEVER have been imagined, etc...

    And I agree with the others that to denigrate someone at their death by saying someone else is better is CRASS at best! I happened to be watching when some *****MORON***** denied taylor swift her due! It was the first time I saw or heard of that idiot, who had NO right to be on stage AT ALL! HIS NAME? Kanye West! and what did HE do? Took the mike from taylor's hands as she was about to speak, I believe she was 19 at the time. It was her FIRST award, and the FIRST such award EVER won for the genre! So it was like three times as important to her as ANY such award would likely be to anyone kanye could mention! Kanye announced that Beyoncé, who wasn't even in the GENRE, was the best! Later, when Beyoncé won, she DID give time to taylor, but it is FAR from the same thing. That time is LOST!

      I don't have a "best singer" - and that's my favorite rendition of Over the Rainbow, too.

      My favorites are based on the music - I like songs sung to feature the content and story of the music...not to feature the warbles and range of the singer.

      Houston's "I look to You" is a good example of a song sung for the music and I love the way she did it.

        I never meant to even IMPLY she had any blame. If I were HER I would be angry at kanye. He cheapened HER experience ALSO! Still, there is nothing ANYONE can do to basically set things right.

        Frankly, given his reputation, that apparently PREDATES the taylor event, kanye should have been BANNED from ANY stage! I mean EVEN if he got an award, or was to perform, HOW could they keep this sort of thing from happening. HELL, that is what they do with securities dealers that get the book thrown at them "You broke the law maliciously, so you are BANNED from the industry! NO LICENSE, and forbidden to do ANYTHING."!

      And it's up to you to declare that or keep it for yoursef. You decide.

      IMHO, it would have been polite to postpone this thread for some time. In civilized society people show respect for someone's tragic death. At least for a while.

      And... it has nothing to do with who is right, better or the best. These are as relative concepts, as people aren't alike.

      Anyway, if you know the showbiz in some extent, then you also know what are the requirements to succeed.

      Steven describes it well. Besides the talent, you must have a strong personality to be able to survive.

      Whitney Houston was born as a talented singer. I loved her voice. And we would be unjust, saying only she could do about what happened and how it happened.

    Well I continue to be offended seeing just the title of this post. (and I wasn't even a Whitney fan, although I do agree with her greatness as a singer). Very rude and disrespectful.

    ... and I note if people stopped responding it would not be on the top of the page today (myself included we have kept supporting it by participating).

    The OP has stuck to his guns, doggedly - and has done a good job of patronizing people for their 'opinion' while not letting it change his MO one bit.

    I am also offended by people blaming Bobby Brown. They have been divorced since 2007 , he did not force her to do drugs or drink. She was an adult with her own mind and will. If he drove her nuts, well she has had 5 years to get past it.

    I did read someplace - I think MTV or TMZ that NO ILLEGAL DRUGS WERE FOUND IN HER ROOM - BUT THAT THEY FOUND XANEX WHICH IS LEGAL -

    The theory being she drank heavily the night before and the combination of that with the XANEX could have caused her to fall asleep in the bathtub, WHERE HER BODY WAS FOUND.

    I notice nobody mentioning this here so just thought I would...

      I agree with some and disagree with other points you've made Pat.

      As for the OP, I have zero respect for him after this thread. I mean ZERO.

      As for Bobby Brown, he was a plague. He wasn't the only problem but he was
      a big part of her problems. He was a terrible influence in her life. As a human
      being, he's not on my list of "shining" examples.

      You're offended I blame him? I'm offended anybody can defend that slime ball.

      But he wasn't the only problem. The business ate her up. She simply wasn't
      able to handle it. Not everybody can.

      This was a good woman who had no idea what she was getting herself into
      some 20 odd years ago.

      Few people do.

      Whitney, you can rest in peace now. The suffering and the misunderstandings
      of you and what you had to deal with are over.

      I wish all the naysayers better luck on their walk through fame.

    Steven - don't get me wrong - I don't know if BB is a slimeball or not.

    You are probably right - but he is one of the people mourning the loss right now and probably remembers all the stupid mean slime ball things he did to cause his divorce (if that was the case).

    I am just saying he is not responsible for her death - he is not responsible for her drug and alcohol abuse -

    ... and again she chose him to begin with - so that is on her for bad judgment if applicable. In this regard and I am sure relevant to this = have you ever seen who her father is? I never see him mentioned at all - that is very telling - and a good reason why she may choose the wrong guy - trust me it is very common to pick the same type as your father and to accept abuse because you think that is all you deserve (and better than him not being there at all). (not)

      Maybe I am naive her ...maybe I am not. I do have experience living with an uncle who was a highly successful recording artiste and performer and the "King" of his music field.

      He was strictly business -- worked like a maniac but never got into any funny business --drugs, call girls etc. But then again --he was no where near Whitney Houston in fame, fortune and pressure

      But like Steve said, not everyone can handle it but here is my thinking. Ok-- the business is getting to you --it is eating you alive (if that was in fact the case) --- why not just leave it.

      I mean Steve Wagenheim has more or less left IM or scaled back considerably and he was/is what I would call a successful IM'er. I get the feeling he did so because his mental and physical health is now more important to him than ever

      Where Whitney was concerned - I mean she had 100 million in the bank --money was never going to be a problem -- at least it shouldn't have been --she was young---beautiful and up to that point healthy --why not just leave the damn thing or scale back

      Nothing is worth your mental health let alone your physical health

      She was not like common folk with some 9-5 job who if they get fired today wouldn't be able to pay the next rent. I honestly feel it wasn't the business that destroyed her.

      My feeling is her addictions killed here in the end -- she may have gotten over BB and whatever else-- but she had a sweet tooth for drugs and the feeling it gave her IMO -- in the same way a person has a sweet tooth for candy and the feeling that eating candy brings.(sugar affects mood)

      There doesn't need to be a reason why she was addicted -- she just was.

      Anyway -- RIP Whitney
