You know, I REALLY don't mind helping someone out thats truly in need if I'm in a position to do so, but THIS kind of crap REALLY tics me off...

I honestly don't understand the mindset of people like this. She didn't see anything wrong with what she did? BS....!!!

What do you want to bet she'll be broke and back on the govt dole in 5 years?

"I thought that they would cut me off, but since they didn't I thought maybe it was OK because I'm not working," Clayton told WDIV. "I feel that it's OK because I have no income, and I have bills to pay. I have two houses."
What an idiot - she should be prosecuted...but she won't be.

Watch, a few years from now she'll be broke, $500k isn't really that much money when your buying houses. Then she won't have any money to pay the property tax on multiple houses. Later the houses will be sold at a tax sale & she'll be right back where she started, no money.

A fool & their money soon will part.

I find her actions completely despicable!

Especially since so many families are in dire straits here. When the automotive industries downsized and did massive layoffs, it hurt a lot of families who haven't been able to find new jobs or the jobs they do find are little more than minimum wage! And that's not to mention the trickle effect it caused with smaller auto based companies.

However, I don't find it unbelievable because the leaders in Detroit are just as dishonest, scratch that, more crooked than that.

The mismanagement and embezzlement of funds has been so bad, that now the FBI is involved and more and more public officials in the Detroit area are dropping. There is a new scandal and indictments on the news practically every week and sometimes two in a week, like this week!

A case of monkey see, monkey do?

I saw the interview they mention in the article. When questioned, she responded with such a sense of entitlement, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. When she said she owned two houses, I just about threw my coffee mug at the tv. She didn't have any problem holding her head high - those ones scare me!

  • Even more ironic in the most depressed area in the country...Detroit - This is not an isolated case...there are tons of wealthy people in the country receiving this type of assistance and more - but this type is the one the republicants will run with -

"House Bill 5032 would require the Michigan Lottery to forward names of any resident who wins over $1,000 to DHS to be cross- referenced with public assistance roles, according to Zorn."

Duh...What...like no one has ever thought of this before?

Euline Clayton said her daughter is "stressed out" from the international media attention she has attracted.
    That's a shame...maybe she can apply for Disability - :p

I'm quite confidant that it is, Dave.

A Detroit News article from way back in the 1920's recently surfaced and it was about crooks in office!

This thing has been going on for decades in Detroit, unfortunately.

You're right, unless they think of investing it on a business or perhaps start their own business then the money would easily go away as fast as it came.

There is an illegal alien that SUPPOSEDLY bought, or caused to be bought, a lottery ticket, We will NEVER know if that is even true. He was afraid to collect the money, as he could be deported. Supposedly, he could NEVER collect the money, because they only let American Citizens do so. SO, HE CLAIMS, he gave the ticket to his BOSS to cash. His boss took the money, all $750 THOUSAND.

He SUED!!!!!!!! HOW? WHY? OK, did the judge do the right thing, and kick him out of the country with NOTHING? Well, supposedly, he is going to be kicked out of the country. SUPPOSEDLY! YEAH RIGHT! With one MILLION dollars!!!!!!! ONE MILLION! WHY? An extra $250K for lawyers fees!!!!!

But YEAH, that woman is YOUNG 24! OK, HERE are her claims!

OH, they kept paying me the benefits, so I figured it was OK! I DON'T HAVE a job!
    OH, I DIDN'T get a million dollars! I took it in a lump sum, so I ONLY got $700K! I DON'T have a job!
OH, I DIDN'T get $700K, I had to pay tax on it, so it is like HALF of that! FACT CHECK!!!!!!>>>> She got about $500K
    I DON'T have a job!
    I $350K(err.... $500K) isn't much, I have TWO houses to pay for!

OK, when I was her age, I only made about $35K. That is STILL respectable! $1 million over TWENTY years is $50,000 a YEAR!!!!!!!! THINK OF IT! She could get a RESPECTABLE amount for a GOOD chunk of her life! She could EASILY fund a nice pension AND pay for the 2 homes AND possibly start a business so she would NEVER need a job! $500K, Pays $50K/year for ONLY, *****ONLY***** TEN years!

BTW I make over $50K, but would give it up for the deal she got. I am over twice her age and only have ONE home! She really has SOME nerve!

BTW I saw an interview yesterday with this woman that came up with a stupidly simple and obvious idea. HECK, if I had a need, and figured I could shape it right, I might have tried it. I heard about it DECADES ago! Brook shields got in trouble once when she was a little kid, and starred with george burns in "Just you and me kid", and it was revealed SHE wore something simliar, so she only APPEARED to be naked. So it is NOT a new idea!

Well, Sara Blakely figured SHE could do better. She apparently had little funds(She says it cost $5,000), and never formally advertised. So where is she today? Well, she is now considered to be the YOUNGEST...

SELF MADE BILLIONARE! SPANX - The Official Site of SPANX - Sara Blakely's Story

And she had 1/200th of what that 1M winner was offered!!!!!!

You're RIGHT! And if she can't pay the $500K she gave up, she should have to somehow pay it over 10 years. If she can't pay it back, maybe pay back 30% of whatever she can with a 13% compounded interest. HEY, it's a better deal than I got when I had to pay those jerks because of something that wasn't even my fault!

It is people like HER that created the whole 2008 fiasco! 24yo? MOST people that age live in apartments, and make LESS than $50K! Most people probably don't even get out of college until about 23yo! Doctors take LONGER! And ***THEY*** are MIDDLE CLASS!!!!!!

The folks on Wall Street were the chief villains in the 2008 crash.

A couple of million bad mortgages would not have tanked the world economy but the exotic investments created by Wall Street that eventually blew up did.

WHY did they create the ability? For people like HER! WHY did the housing market collapse? Because of people like HER! WHY did the second and third waves happen? Because of PEOPLE LIKE HER! Sorry, but it is true! WHAT do you think "sub prime mortgages" were for? They were for HER!

Let me tell you how it happened.

              1. In the 1970s, there was stagflation. Rates went SKY HIGH, and they created new mortgage types to allow the poor(in spirit and treatment of) MIDDLE class to buy homes. The average home cost WELL over 4 times its "purchase price"! So a $100K home would cost over a HALF MILLION DOLLARS! In the 80s, apparently they all but got rid of those. They also had low or no doc loans, and those became harder to get.

              2. Things ran fairly decently, ESPECIALLY when the fed stopped the crazy increases, BUT....

              3. They started lowering rates a LOT, brough back low doc and no doc, etc... People even started ENCOURAGING people to lie! After all, they could charge various fees. They could be WELL into the tens of thousands of dollars, and were FINANCED!

              4. Banks tried to milk this for all they could, so they sold the rights to POOLS of mortgages. THESE are the NOW well known derivatives! Wall street, and the banks got a cut. OH, it may have only been perhaps $1000 on a given loan, but it adds up and refinancing meant MORE money!

              5. Well, time came to pay, and eventually some couldn't comply. They were foreclosed on. Because the group grew, and poorer areas tended to have more, prices started to DROP! This affected ALL of the above! The FIRST WAVE!

              6. This caused some people higher up on the rung to worry, or lose money, or even their jobs, and THEY started to have foreclosures, etc.... The SECOND WAVE!

              7. This caused some people higher up to worry, etc.... The THIRD WAVE!

              8. Sometime around now, and even during the others, all this, and the derivatives did the SAME!

DON'T forget that SOME wanted to refinance, and each wave made it harder which hurt THEM!

SO, 3 and on were because of PEOPLE LIKE HER! And you CAN'T discount that, and DON'T! WHY?

You said "the exotic investments created by Wall Street that eventually blew up did."!

BTW THOSE are the derivatives I spoke of earlier in #4!

Ask yourself..... DIG DEEP! READY? OK....

              1. Do you CARE about exotic?
              2. Do you CARE about investments?
              3. Do you EVEN care it blew up?
              4. Is ANYONE angry at THAT?

Before you answer, consider what happened on the news! Stories about BONUSES! Stories about HIGH salaries! Stories about the PARTIES! About the high prices paid for PARTIES, etc...

I submit that you guys are, as I am, upset about the GREED! The HIGH price paid for NOTHING! The WASTE over that that NOT ONLY hurts others but is like flipping the bird to everyone else!

I'm not saying the sub-prime mess would not have hurt the nation all by itself but...

What you refuse to acknowledge is that the derivatives that blew up, created by the large investment firms...

... is what actually sank the US and world economy not the sub-prime mortgages themselves.

Those investment houses did not, I repeat did not have to create those dangerous investments - but they did, and they blew up - and as a result...

You can speak more on this subject if you like but I'm through...

...as this thread is a about a small time ripoff - not about the causes of the Great Recession of 2008.

I wonder if she will hire a financial adviser - somehow I highly doubt it. I tend to agree with others here who have stated she'll be back in the system in a few years.

I agree with the comments that she should be prosecuted, but unfortunately the law is on her side in this case. Until the laws are changed, there's not much that can be done.

I can understand people being greedy and taking advantage of an opportune situation. (How many people get too much change back from a cashier and just shrug their shoulders, smile, keep it, then tell their friends something like, "It wasn't MY mistake. Why should I tell the cashier?")

What I don't understand is people who get greedy with significant amounts of cash or merchandise and think nobody is going to notice or have a problem with it? That's just dumb.

I agree with other WF members that it probably won't take long for this person to return to her formerly impoverished state.

She'll probably take a loan out on BOTH homes, have BOTH go to foreclosure, and fight tooth and nail! FAR better people than her have gone broke.

I'm surprised no one is wondering how someone who can't afford to feed herself can afford to buy lottery tickets.

ETA I get really aggravated when I am behind someone in the grocery store, with exceptionally nice clothes, professional manicure and hair style, expensive perfume whips out their let's make it look like I have a credit card food stamps.

A few weeks ago there was a woman in front of me who didn't have enough on her card to pay for everything so she took a few things back from her order all the while muttering that it didn't matter as long as she got her meat. She had bought several bags of meat. Enough for a block party BBQ.

I eat several meatless meals a week because meat is so dang expensive. At least it is good for my health.

Then there are the tribes with 5 kids under 5 with their diaper coupons and food assistance. Should kids suffer? Hell no! But if you can't afford to feed them, put your knees together dammit.

It's WELL KNOWN at this point that many of them buy lottery tickets. Many cost only $1! But they should be FORBIDDEN to benefit from lotteries. Lotteries are SUPPOSED to be there to give the government a net GAIN to help pay for schools, etc.... Those that are illegal, felons, or are a net drain on the public funds can NEVER give a net gain with $1. They are, in fact, risking NOTHING! They should have no reward.

AND many have kids because they get paid MORE money to have them! Just today I saw a talk show, and they were talking about giving the poor money and deals to have pets. GIVE ME A BREAK! If they can't afford the purchase, will they afford anything else? I would LOVE a nice little dog, but I travel too much, and it wouldn't be fair.

What they SHOULD do is take the kid, and charge the parents some amount like $100 a month to care for the kid. But NOPE, they figure that that kid will be brought up as THEY want and are happy to pay them OTHER peoples money.

I have to assume this is at least 2nd generation
A social service worker I knew years ago got so disgusted because mothers would come in to sign up their 18 yr olds on their birthday "so he can get his own benefits"...and it was perfectly acceptable under the system then.

This was on the news again today for some reason - they were pointing out the woman has been "cut off" - but no attempt to get the money back or to prosecute her. Her excuse is she needed the food stamps because "now I have two houses to pay for". They should have prosecuted her and TAKEN some of those winnings to repay to taxpayers for ALL the money she's received.

EXACTLY! And the mother probably didn't do that for the kid, but so that SHE could get MORE money. After all, when he was 18, she probably lost "benefits".

People might say my idea about putting the kids in foster care, and having the parents pay maybe $100 a month is WRONG, etc.... It DOES succeed in TWO ways though:

          1. The kid is isolated from the parents, and may break the loop you are talking about.
          2. The parents would not be isolated from the act, and it might cause THEM to break the poverty loop. You see, NOW they are isolated from the act, so they see NO problem with having 10 or more kids. In fact, they look at it like a JOB!

Current deal? People stay in poverty, the population grows exponentially, and we get ALL the problems, including bigger deficits.

The deal I said? 2 generations could leave the poverty area, the population will level out, and it could solve a lot of problems.

HEY, everything is in place! Simply consider the propaganda of poverty as mistreating a child, as it IS, and fine them $100/month for the act! all the laws may already be on the books. Who knows, maybe they have this idea and are merely not enforcing it.

Why is a 24 year old on benefits? Aren't young people supposed to work!

Young people ARE supposed to work but many, especially some of the POOR, feel all should work for THEM!

They are ALSO not expected to have homes, but some of the POOR figure all others do so THEY should!

They are ALSO, BY DEFINITION, NOT expected to make more than maybe $20,000 per household, with maybe another $500 per kid. HECK, a single person would generally make LESS!!!!!!!

She has her priorities ALL MESSED UP! That means that if we gave her a billion dollars TAX FREE, she would likely spend it within a decade, and possibly in only a few weeks.

Ever see brewsters millions? He was given $30,000,000 and told to spend it on anything and everything he could! He could not get the FULL inheritance until he spent ALL of that money, and got VALUE, but ended up broke! He EVEN found loopholes, like buying an EXPENSIVE, RARE, PRISTINE, stamp, and using it to mail a letter to the law firm. It was cancelled making it virtually worthless. He STILL had trouble getting rid of it.

But SHE doesn't care if there is value! SHE isn't working towards a bigger goal. She thinks $50K a YEAR is NOTHING!

I'm surprised she was even able to get food stamps with 2 houses. Seems they would have made her sell one of them. They have a restriction on how many cars you can own and still get help.

Not unbelievable at all - just disgusting to the extreme.

Sal - I think the second home was the one she bought with lottery winnings.

This is the second time this has happened in Michigan - at what point do govts start monitoring the handouts?

They have been monitoring them for *******DECADES*******! To claim otherwise is just so much GARBAGE! The IRS has a law that has been on the books for DECADES that ****ALL**** big winnings are to be reported ASAP! And they often assess the taxes accordingly! They ARE reported! FURTHER, ALL welfare, etc... is supposed to be reported! They created a great little invention that you or I maybe could only use for about 40 years, but the US had them for more like 60 years! It is called a COMPUTER!

As one that is in the business of helping companies comply with all the laws, and track this down to the item and penny, it is a TOUGH sell for them to convince me that this "wasn't reported". OK, WHO failed? The STATE, or the federal government? If it were the state, you could BET that the IRS would be breathing down their necks, and have the federal government on their case!
