    I hear you.

    Just make sure you include...

    - No tail gating:

Stay at least 2 1/2 car lengths away from the car in front of you at all times while moving.

    Stay the hell away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    - Sudden lane changes:

Be very slow and cautious when making lane changes.

If you follow those two rules above you'll avoid 75% of all accidents.

Thanks to Kurt of the WF for this info.

At 70mph that's WAY too close.

A better rule of thumb is a car length for every 10mph.

Those dealing with this, in CA at least, say 2 SECONDS away! Pick a landmark, and make sure you pass it AT LEAST 2 seconds after the car in front of you. If you go ten times as fast, it will be 10 times the distance.

      - Sudden lane changes:

Be very slow and cautious when making lane changes.
Make sure you are far enough in front of the car you will be in front of, and far enough behind the car you will be in back of, or you can CAUSE an accident!!!!!!!!

        You're right about that Steve.

I take a look back whenever I plan on making a turn.

I'm a great brake pumper to put the person behind me on alert.

If I can't see your headlights...

You're too damn close to me, I'll speed up a bit to get some distance and you'll also get a couple of brake pumps for your infraction - until you respect my space.

But if you do what we were taught, the one car length for every 10mph,all you do is get jerks passing and cutting in in front of you.

      I don't mind at all.

If I'm going to have an accident, I'm determined that it won't be my fault.

I've avoided plenty of accidents by staying away from the car in front of me.

One time a car in front of me stopped on a dime and swerved so that it's butt was almost sideways - but it extended into the next lane.

Since I was quite a ways away from that strange behaving car in front of me it was easy for me to avoid an accident with plenty of room to spare.

I simply waited and went around the car.

      - Plus...

Staying away from the car in front of me allows me to have a less pressurized drive.

If you're tailgating you must seriously concentrate and hope that car in front of you does not stop suddenly.

      My drives are very relaxed.

      - I do not need to be king of the road and I blow my horn a lot more than the average driver - just to be sure.

    My three rules of driving:

    1, Don't hit stuff.
    2. Don't let stuff hit you.
    3. Watch for predators (police).

If you just take the attitude that you are invisible, you never will get hit.

And I'm sure that a LOT of people on their damned cell phones didn't see the other car. You hit me while talking or texting and I survive, you'll be having that thing surgically extricated from your rectum.

I DO mind because THAT is what causes the accident in the first place. I don't know if you have ever driven in high traffic areas, but you can be the safest driver in the world and be in an accident.

I live in the D.C. metro area which is one of the most congested in the nation - always in the top 5 nationwwide for congestion.

      - Even after the rush hours there's always a lot of traffic out there.

      - Of course someone can be the safest driver in the world and still get into an accident.

All I'm trying to to is minimize the chances of it being me - thanks to someone who got absent minded or wouldn't follow the rules.

    I agree totally TL ().

IF you aren't near other cars you can't hit them, they can't hit you. I always look for pockets to drive in. If someone won't get off my butt I slow way down to let them pass and if they won't pass, I pull over. Let them suck someone else's tail pipe.

Just got back from running a few errands for the family and someone tried to hit me as they were coming out of a drive way.

Just as I was blowing my horn to make sure they wouldn't do it, they were about to do it, but the horn blow stopped them in their tracks.

I'm blowing my horn when ever I'm about to pass someone waiting in a driveway every time from now on.

    No exceptions!

I thought I remembered you saying what area you lived in before, but I wasn't going to post it. Yes, I am very familiar with driving in the DC area too,and that is what made me make the comments I have.
I literally drove around the beltway for years. And I saw it grow from 2 lanes to the monstrosity it is now. I don't think there has been a time in the last 25 years that they haven't been doing some kind of construction.
So, we both drove in the same area and just each developed different methods of defensive driving.. Nothing wrong with that.

      Kim,

      - I like a lot of space between me and the car in front & back of me.

      - I'm a horn blower most every chance I get. ( call me Horatio )

( Cause I'm not counting on the other person to be alert )

      - I'm blowing my horn when passing people waiting at drive ways and even stop signs from now on.

      - I'll speed up and pump my brakes a couple/three times if someone if tailgating me and if necessary - I'll pull over and let them pass.

      - I take my time changing lanes.

      - Before making a turn I check on the car behind me.

I've seen alot of wrecks due to prior work...

I'll make it simple, there are two MAIN reasons for wrecks

      1. Distractions
      2. Speed

Thats pretty much it, people get distracted for whatever reason (phone, text, radio, hot girl walkng on sidewalk, dazing off due to thinking about work, family, etc, or distracted due to some impairing substance which is now out of their control) and because they are not paying attention they hit something because in fact, they did not see it, or see it in time to avoid it.

Speed is another big issue, regardless of what you think, speed limits are set for a reason, when people speed, their reaction times are drastically reduced which makes it almost impossible to avoid an accident if something happens in the road ahead of them.

Everyone who drives (or even rides in a car) should be forced to watch this video, I just wish they'd show it on U.S. tv

      and this video...

      not so funny huh?

The main reason for car accidents is apparently excessive speed.

It's logical when you think about it. Even if you were only doing 1 mph when you hit something. That was 1 mph too fast.
