I have a good friend who is allergic to spiders. He was bite 5 times in the stomach one night while he was sleeping. His stomach swelled up and was as hard as a turtle shell for a while, came close to killing him also

He still prefers spiders to the insects they eat

I used to be scared crapless of spiders. Then one day I went to swat one and it cringed, scared. I got a sudden wave of compassion for the little terrified thing. I don't kill spiders now - I just catch them and put them outside. They are just another creature thrown onto the planet without knowing why and trying to do the best they can to survive.

I can't kill a rodent either. I live trap them and take them where they will have what they need to survive far enough from humans to not get into someone's home that will kill them.

I hate snakes. Scorpions and centipedes too. I'm getting better with spiders but the gigantic tarantulas scare me. Brown recluses here too, very scary. Kim, sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope she has a speedy recovery.

Just heard on the news last night the rattlesnakes are coming into yards trying to find water. We're experiencing a drought and snakes are trying to find water.

Gotta keep a close eye on the kid and dogs.
And I don't go too far into the brush to find golf balls.

Hi Terra. I'm not sure if you're joking or not however I think squishing them is a bit “cruel.”

Usually I just put a glass over them and put them outside. : ) In the UK they’re harmless creatures anyway.

I don't mind snakes. My cat brings them to us a couple times a week, we just throw them outside in the grass. I don't know where he's getting them really. I don't mind any live insect while it's minding it's own business. I did accidentally touch a dead fly yesterday. I screamed my head off. I surprised myself with my terror!

OK guys...you are all missing the most important new icky buy of all time. Bedbugs. They're spreading like wildfire and once you get them it can take a major effort to get rid of them. Plus their #1 food source is human blood. Have you been bitten by a bedbug or bedbugs? If you've been attacked by bedbugs you will never again hate spiders. Trust me. LOL.

I live just north of Cincinnati. The Bedbug capital of the USA.

Fortunately, we've avoided them.

But, They are definitely on my hate list.

A friend of mine has a brother who lives across the river from Cincy. My friend said his brother and wife said the same thing about Cincinnati being The Bedbug capitol of the USA.

Is it because of the close proximity to the river or the humidity in the summer? Or is there some other reason? He also said that they get tons of spiders there at certain times of the year? Again is it the river or the climate?

I guess if I had to pick I would avoid bed bugs but spiders would definitely be #2 on my Bug Hate List.

Have no idea why. There are several large cities along the Ohio River
but they seem to have the problem.

Fortunately I'm about 25 miles north. Apparently, just far enough away to avoid them.

Nothing can live in my bed. I sprinkle salt and herbs between the mattress and sheets and am a faithful bedroom vaccuumer. Always citrus peels around the room - I have all sorts of not so bug friendly tricks.

I had a pet scorpion for a few years though - he was really cute. He was small enough that he would have still been hitching a ride on mom, but we had a wind storm. I almost washed him down the tub drain - he was small as an ant and didn't even look like a bug, at the last second I noticed the little tail - so I fixed him up a cage with rocks and dirt and a few plants and a little water and kept some bugs in it that he could catch. He wasn't all that fun, though - liked to dig under the rocks and hide. Finally let him go. He was educational at the least.
