WTH???

A friend of mines daughter was detained ALL NIGHT last night and basically treated like a common criminal...

She's on her way home as we speak...and she's NOT HAPPY!

She's a musician for crying out loud! She's also toured the U. K. previously and already has a decent, growing fan base over there.

I mean...WTH is going on with the lawmakers over there???

    WTF!

So Brit Police is interested in these "dangerous" and "scary" musicians - and yet, they let all these morons who want to rule their country burn their flag, try to ruin their history and culture, and go out on the streets shouting "kill the uk" and whatnot.

    Makes sense.

Actually I just read the article and it is ridculous.

I don't know what's going on but somehow things have become very twisted and back to front.

Makes you wonder if those conpiracy theorists are actually right.

I know who is to blame though and his initials are TB. In my opinion he should be done for treason.

I don't really follow what goes on politically in the UK, I have enough trouble keeping up here, but I have to admit I used to enjoy watching your Parliment discussions and Blake was a dynamic speaker.

Unfortunately it isn't curable. Those of us not infected will just have to wait it out until they off themselves. Then we rebuild.

Tom Brady? He had nothing to do with this :p. Although he does seem to be feeling guilty here:

            It's simple...

If you're a foreigner, a musician playing in a concert for example - it is the responsibility of the musicians agent to organise in advance a Tier 5 visa which gives you the musician the right to work temporarily in the United Kingdom.

If any musician does not have Tier 5 visa clearance (or sponsorship) you will be deported back to your country of origin.

Similarly, I can't just turn up in the United States or Canada to do work over there without the proper visa being applied for in advance.

It matters not what you do whether you're a musician, a business person, an entrepreneur - if you come to the UK to carry out any form of business or work for monetary gain you must have the correct visa at your point of entry.

This is just commonsense. It applies everywhere equally.

      What Mark Andrews said.

Essentially it is a work permit and she didn't have one.

If you want to come to the UK and work without a permit and get a free house to boot, you need to come via the backdoor, look haggard and not speak a word of English.

You have to have the proper visas/permit to come here to work, too. Sounds like she needs a better informed advance team.

She should be unhappy with the person/company who set up the tour - they aren't doing the job.

Exactly. If she had the proper permits / paperwork there wouldn't have been a problem. But she didn't have them obviously and therefore was sent back home again after being held in a detention centre for a few hours which is bog standard practice.

The law applies to everyone equally, just because one is a musician no matter how well known or famous one may be, this doesn't buy you special privileges in the United Kingdom.

The law is there to be applied to one and all without prejudice when said law is broken. Her agent was clearly at fault (or whoever was supposed to sort all of this out for her on her behalf) with the cooperation of the venues concerned at which she was supposed to perform.

There's nothing daft or some hidden agenda about this in the slightest. It's just procedure and is there to protect the citizens of the United Kingdom. Make an exception in one case and where do you stop? Where do you draw the line for future cases?

Is this new? Like I said, she's already toured there before.

Even several of the venues were unaware of this "special" permit.

Dave, it's not a new law - the article you linked to is from 2009.

The responsibility generally falls to the Booking Agents, so perhaps it's not too surprising that some venues would be unaware, especially the smaller places that might not be used to hosting non native acts.

I hope your friend's daughter manages to sort this out and return soon.

                Correct. Spot on.

It's not the responsibility of the venues concerned. As long as they have the appropriate entertainment license this is all that really concerns them.

This is totally the responsibility Dave of the booking agent/s to sort out the appropriate visa not only for the musician but any other band members too.

Obviously if they're from the EU as opposed to The Commonwealth the aforementioned Tier 5 visa requirement would not be applicable.
