I'm a high school dropout and don't have any specific qualifications. Most skills, disciplines and habits I learned & acquired, I learned by myself.

Educational background is just not important in running a business, but the right mental attitude.

I'd make a bet of all the people who have high qualifications, very few ever manage to create a full time income in an online business. Because most people get trained to work a job, similarly the way a dog gets trained!

The mindset needs to be on working ON the business, rather than IN the business.

But it doesn't matter whether or not you have a high educational background, because you can succeed anyway.

Really?

I'd bet the opposite. I know a lot of educated people doing very well online...

Just because you do not have an education do not knock those who have.

I would bet that very few online marketers have no education. You only hear from a a select few that haven't as they are 'poster boys' but I'd bet that the vast majority have some form of formal education.

Education changed the way I think and approach business. It taught me not to follow the crowd as so many do in IM but instead to create my own blue oceans...

Many of the people I have been partnering with online recently have been very highly educated too. Many of them making lucrative incomes online in less then a year...

and just to add. I seriously thought about dropping out of uni in 1999 to chase my IM dream, so glad I didn't .....

Very nice.

I got my Bachelors in Business, but with an emphasis in Information Systems. Ultimately I'd like to say that I got my "MRS" degree (met my husband in college), but I suppose that was not the original, ultimate goal. LOL - certainly something I'm proud to have accomplished, though.

I am glad I have my degree but sometimes I wish I would have just hit internet marketing full force instead of sidetracking to college and becoming a zombie for 5 years trying to do school, work and take care of 3 kids.

The upside is that I will live forever since they will keep me alive to keep paying on those loans! lol

But really, I know I could have gotten everything I needed to be successful in IM on my own without having to go to college. So don't let that hold anyone back. Give it your all and don't worry about 'qualifications'.

I was a honour student in high school, but I dropped out of college after making the silly mistake of choosing micro-economics as a subject. I mean, if I had gone full-tilt into the arts, either in music or drama, I probably would have graduated with at least a BA. But no, micro-economics killed my interest in post-secondary education. Plus I was more interested in making money and partying than studying at the time, if the truth be told. That was a heck of a long time ago.

Would I have done anything different?
Maybe...

But I've learned long ago not to regret anything.

There's nothing wrong with educating oneself, but I do know too many people who spent enormous amounts of money on an education but have been unable to ever get employment in their chosen field. That is a crying shame.

BS in Computer Science and working a lead position with an IT Contractor.

Really desire to make the hop form the cube cell, but health insurance for the wifey is of major concern right now... So, need to jump when this is no longer of concern and can provide via online income streams.

Unless your going for a specific skill or discipline (doctor, technian, lawyer etc), school is really all about "learning how to learn". Really, critical thinking and time managment skills, with all the related entrapments, should be mandatory in the early years of school.

There are wide open niches and some nice product development in these personal development arenas and those who apply and maintain such awareness skills will do well.

They can then quickly determine what truly works. Opportunities can exist in simply determining failed marketing attempts of sound product and service ideas and then improving the marketing approach (target audience and methods). The biggest challenge is customer service and trust.

Of course this is for the professional and not the ones who simply try and game the system. Those days are closing fast and most won't last. Acquire your customers with respect and keep in contact as you would with decent collegues, it will all follow!

Still working this all out!!

P.S I will publically and respectfully state that I am a Christ follower and aim to treat all with respect and dignity. If others have similar beliefs please drop a PM as I'd like to start a "Christ-centered" marketing string sometimes...

This is not about religion, but living a life of respect to all, with understanding and peace - no wars here! If this violates any policy or offends, my apologies... just want to make contact with like-minded believers... that all!

Credentials can be deceptive-i have encountered some very bright people with nothbing but high school education-while have also met some damned ignorant Phd's...
Me, A B.A in politics, philosophy and sociology, follwed by a grad dip in adult education
commenced a masters in IT, pulled out of that, have done a lot of IT courses for my job. Am a full time scholar at University of life

Education does help. It is not the ultimate decider of success but lets not knock it. I'm qualified to coach marketers only because of my qualifications, so for me being a dropout would be a hindrance to my chosen path...

But I am a postgrad, perhaps looking into part time university lecturing too.

To me, if you have an education, that's great. I've debated going back to college several times, because I like learning.

But I admire someone, who despite his or her lack of education, rises up and becomes a success.

In the end, it's not whether you have the educational qualifications or not, it's what you do with what you got that's important, I think.

Does any of the above matter online? No. I make more more than I ever did in law (and believe me I worked for some of the top firms) but more important to me is the lifestyle IM gives me and the best of all is helping others get to where they want to be.

I take some what offence to the comments of GeraldGigerl as in my case I see an education/profession as no bar to making it online.

In fact I have learned more sitting in client meetings (in my former career) with some of the sharpest business minds in the world and just watching/listening to how they operate and that is priceless!

Nothing applicable to marketing or business, really. Like most, I finished high school with 10 or 12 GCSE's — decent grades (except in maths, which I loathed). I can't say I very much liked school, with its regimented customs and being surrounded by utter twerps for 6 hours each day. Later did a couple of other short courses that earned me a few additional certifications/qualifications, hardly of an academic nature.

So, I guess by educational standards you could say I'm a bit of a dunderhead.

I do. I have a very convoluted yet cohesive education.

BA - Majors credits in English and Majors credits in Ethnolinguistic (post grad level studies in linguistics) Majors credits in Sociology.

Minors credits in political science, philosophy. Something else too, but I can't remember what it was, lol.

My education has been instrumental in ALL aspects of everything I've ever done.

I've also researched natural medicine and healing for about 30 years. I've now been studying earth science - some areas in depth - for about 5 years.

You can tell what areas I'm well versed in because I will write about them - I don't like that "I can write on anything attitude". You CAN write on anything - but to write excellent material - you have to have the background.

As far as people slamming education.........if you've noticed.......the only ones who slam it are the ones that don't have it. The person without is like a person inside a room without windows- they can be expert at everything in that room - but they can't see outside of it. The person outside (with the education) can see inside the room and be an expert as what is there - and see outside the room and be able to die all of the information from inside and outside together to find conclusions not available to those inside the room.

I think EVERYONE needs some education - it doesn't matter if it's in a subject meant to get you cash or just one that really floats your boat. Take a course or two and see what a charge it can be.

Worked for Microsoft. Responsible in coming up with technical solutions when everyone in this world can't resolve any computer security issue in his/her computer.
I hate following rules from someone whom I feel and know that I am much better than him/her. That's why I hate being an employee.

I had a rough childhood so I left home early, got my high school diploma a year early and went on to college where I got my BA in English and Journalism. I would like to add that I did this while working full time and taking care of my daughter who I had my freshman year of college. It was challenging but ultimately the most rewarding thing I had done at that point in my life.

I'd like to state before anything else that the most important factor in my business is me and whether I went to college or not, I'd still be me.

BA in the arts majoring in drama. I started college while still in high school and also took numerous courses in journalism, English and education along with with some psychology.

I also earned my degree in the medical field in medical assisting specialist and medical secretary.

I have earned other licenses and certificates as well but I'm not going to list them because as I alluded to in my first sentence, I don't believe they are the qualifying identifiers of what I do. I am and my educational studies are merely an extension of me.

I done gradjiated from the sixth grade. Only took me 14 years to do it. I looked at taking the 7th grade but they done told me I was too smart fer that and I should look into becoming a crash-test dummy. I'm gonna suit up and start practicing tomorrow!

Did well in school as a kid, skipped the 8th grade and managed to maintain straight A's throughout my Freshman year of high school. The year after that, I got depressed and bored so I dropped out.

Wasted a few months in beauty school before realizing I hated that kind of stuff. Survived a year working in fast food. Then finally moved to a bigger city and started escorting. The rest is history, as they say.

Started exploring a few different online methods of making money in the past year and a half or so...

  LOL! Yeah, I suppose you could say that my first real internet marketing venture was writing some rather creative online advertisements back in the days of Craigslist.
  
  I've always considered myself a writer, so coming up with new stuff for the ads was fun for me. These days I'm trying to learn how to write sales copy for the web...but maybe I already know how!
  
  Granted, you don't have to be talented with a pen to write effective ads for selling "erotic services." Those pretty much sell themselves, no pun intended. Still, having that experience certainly can't hurt now that I'm writing to sell other things. :-)

Multiple certificates in many business related training programs.

However, as much as I learned in that, I think that (and I state this often) I am self taught by reading tons of books, listening to audio, watching videos and attending lectures in most everything that has really helped me in business.

I do recommend higher education and did to my children and all my nieces and nephews just because it shows a level of dedication and persistence that is the norm of understanding for the masses and thus opens doors.

This doesn't really mean anything until it's compared to the population at large.

In 2002, the high school graduation rate was 68%. From 1990 to 2009, the graduation rate ranged from 68 to 70%. These numbers are for the population as a whole. Women graduation at a slightly higher rate. One source stated the standard rate for women is 72%.

Comparing just the 68% (or 72%) number above to the 75% doesn't include people with GEDs who go on to have "some college education." I'm sure this number is small, but we're already talking about figures that might not be statistically significant.

If anything, the numbers seem to be average to slightly above average. And, as you mentioned, these numbers are easily skewed due to the small sample size.
