      Is obese okay, then?

      How about just simply overweight?

Apparently not. Loony UK medical guidelines (NICE) say even the word "obese" is derogatory!

        Obese Label 'Derogatory', Nice Warns

They advise professionals to use alternative terms!! Really? There can't be any left! Are people really that sensitive? If so they should seek psychiatric advice.

So noticing someone is fat is now the same as hating them and wanting to hurt them? Fascist wanna-be's are about the stupidest people on this planet, I swear it.

If fat people think that they won't be fat or that nobody will notice they are fat if the word "fat" is not used......maybe we should call them "demented" instead since they no longer have a lucid grip on reality.

I'd have to quote every person in this thread to really address this. Let's just say it continues to prove me right about political correctness has gone insane.

So let me see, I am not fat, most people say I am skinny. Do I have the right to say you are hating on me now??

A couple days ago, I saw a midget. I tried to act like all was normal. I certainly wouldn't ridicule him. If he asked me to do something to get him to play in a normal basketball team, I would say "NOPE, you're delusional". I have seen FAT flight attendants that couldn't even stand up on an airplane. I don't call them fat, BUT...

I RESENT being moved for "weight/balance issues" while THEY can lumber around. RESENT them touching me, and nearly breaking my seat because they can't simply walk.
RESENT the fact that they cost the airlines so much and boost my cost.
RESENT that they FEIGN not understanding that asking for thin attendants was mostly NOT due to appearance! If they magically weighed less, EVEN if they looked the same, and didn't cause all the related problems, I would be better with it.

For the record, I am fat. STILL, I am thinner than some of those flight attendants!

HEY, MAYBE they should sue GRAVITY!!!!!!!

HEY, there ARE a lot of OTHER reasons for not hiring heavy people. Did YOU know that MOST ladders, furniture, and scales are rated for only about 250 pounds? That is roughly 120KG.

    My opinion:

Is calling someone fat a hate crime? No.

Is it rude and insensitive? Yes. Why would anyone feel the need to tell someone else they're overweight? Do you think they don't already know? (If you're a doctor then that's a different story. You do have a good reason to comment on a person weight problem.)

Many problems could be solved with a little common sense. Why do so many people feel they have to make everything a law or a political issue.

I've had people ask me for my honest opinion about their weight. I give it to them. They get upset, if they are overweight and I tell them that. You asked, which means you had to at least suspect that you were fat. If you want me to lie to you... don't ask me for my honest opinion. I'm not your boyfriend or husband. I will straight up tell you if you ask me to.

I don't ever mention it unless specifically asked about it, though. If you want to be fat, you can be fat. Not going to bother me a bit and it won't interfere with our friendship. Unless you spill over into my seat at the movies. Then we get a one seat buffer.

Other than that, have fun tubbies of the world!

You have THAT right! If a black gets hurt by a white, a mere claim that the white hates blacks suddenly makes it WORSE? HOW?

A crime should be a crime! If you kill a person, it should be judged SOLELY on the circumstances of what led up to it, and the actual attempt and or result. After all, if a person threatens to kill you to steal your car, if they are the same race, or otherwise like you, it doesn't mean they won't kill you. If you happen to kill them, it is STILL self defense, even if you DO hate them.

Likewise, if you call a person fat, to describe them, discourage them, or just as a casual thing, it should not be a crime. If they are less capable because of the weight, because of running, size, or weight, it should not be a crime. MAYBE if you intentionally but in just to get them fired, or dissuade a competitor or employer, it should be a MINOR crime.

There ARE a lot of cases where weight CAN be meaningful. The military even has gauges for it to exclude some people.

Telling someone they are fat is pointing out the obvious. They probably already know they are fat, don't they?

The problem with overuse of the term "hate crime" is it seems to follow a path of social opinion. The term is used as verbal bling to make a point that has little substance in the first place.

      Consider the potential conversations:

"you are fat" is a hate crime

"I am fat" is a statement of fact

      "I am fat" - "no, you're not" - is a lie

      Where does it end?

In many cases, people are delusional. Anorexic people often think they're fat. I'm reminded of a book I'm reading right now (Younger Next Year). There's a part in it where a doctor is saying how people tell him about their exercise program, and he says (paraphrasing), "No, you don't exercise. You're fat. You can't waddle down the hall without getting out of breathe. You can lie to me but quit lying to yourself, it's killing you."

We humans are excellent at lying to ourselves. I think most of us do it to some degree.

Many problems could be solved with a little common sense. Why do so many people feel they have to make everything a law or a political issue.
You're so right, Rose. The trouble with most people's "common sense" is they think theirs is better than everyone else so they need to force their brand of it on others.

It doesn't end. These people are out to force their opinions and ideas on everyone else. The more you give the more they try to take. They do not understand theirs is just one opinion out of 7 billion on this planet. They want the world to view life through their interpretation of reality.

They're petty little dictators with delusions of grandeur.

An idea worth considering. At the very least we should elect some people to undo the stupid laws instead of thinking up new ones. They don't think they're doing their job unless they pass new laws, so we get new laws, needed or not.

I wish I could remember where I read it, but a few months ago I read that the average American breaks three federal laws a day. Face it, if they want you in jail, there are enough laws to put anyone in jail at any time.
