Any MS Word Experts in the House? PROBLEM SOLVED

Problem solved, thanks folks!

For some reason, MS Word suddenly decided to start correcting spelling using the UK English dictionary. Since I'm from the US, it should be using the US English dictionary.

I'm using MS Word Starter 2010. I opened the options, and changed it back from UK to US English, but it is still telling me color should be colour, caliber should be calibre, and so on ... even with US English still selected.

It's basically on this one document. If I start a new doc it uses US English like it should. Shutting down and restarting the program doesn't help. It might have gotten switched when I was viewing some PLR, I don't know. I didn't change it manually, I know that. But now this one document I was working on is stuck in UK mode.

Anyone know how to correct this stupid behavior and make it work right again?

Hi Dennis

If this is just one document, try this

Before trying to change it - use ctrl+a to highlight all of the text first.
Then use options to change the dictionary to US

Normally works?

Also at any time - use Shift+F1 to reveal the Formatting (which includes Language setting)

Thanks PJ, but I already tried that. It was already set to US. I also tried copying and pasting the entire contents into a new document. That didn't work either.

When you are in the document - press F7 to reveal the spell checker - what does the Dictionary Language in the window say?

Hi Dennis,

From the ribbon choose Review----> Languages.

When the box opens to set the default language make sure that the box at the bottom is not ticked, because if it is then the document will detect the language automatically and over ride your US English choice.

PJ, it doesn't show a dictionay there. It makes a UK spelling suggestion for the first word it doesn't like. If I click the Options button and the Custom Dictionaries button from the Proofing tag it shows US English as the default.

There are a couple ways I can get into where you choose the dictionary, and US English is selected both ways.

Check spelling and grammar - Office Starter - Office.com

Try turning off automatic language detection. See if that works.

Mark, that did it! I don't know how I missed that. I looked at that pop-up menu several times, but the first couple of searches keep talking about changing dictionaries, so I guess I had "dictionary" on my mind.
