Talking about tribute bands....which ones have impressed you?

Mecury Queen tribute band

I saw this band live 10 years ago. Freddie was a lot thinner with more hair.
This local band blew me a way, they were so like the queen

John Lennon The Cavern
tribute to the beatles

i saw this guy Gary Gibson on a program called Stars in their eyes.
He is so like Lennon in looks and sound.

I don't see the point either, and for the life of me I can't fathom why people pay to see them. If they are good enough to do a passable imitation of the original, they should be good enough not have to trade on another group's already established name.

The "point" is pretty simple, to have fun. It's ironic you guys don't get the point, as it seems you two have your own tribute band...

Certainly this is the best tribute band I've ever seen (tes, I know they're Australian!), and I've seen them twice.

They've now been going longer than the original, and as you can see, they can fill the Albert Hall, which is no mean feat for a mere tribute band.

I was impressed with the sheer professionalism of the group, their Swedish accents and Abba mannerisms, and the absolute showmanship that was the essence of the Abba stage shows.

The two boys "Benny" and "Bjorn" played a set with just them by themselves, and their musicianship was superb, especially "Bjorn" on the piano.

And of course the girls were not only nice to look at, they could really sing. They had the audience (including me) eating out of the palm of their hand - you can see the same reaction in the audience in the video. All in all, a show I've never forgotten.

Well crap, now I have to go watch the real thing.

They weren't so bad, I'll admit - and it does take a bit to fill the Albert Hall.

Ask yourself do you like impersonators? commedians, etc? well this is an extention to music, they are fun and it is amazing when you see lookalikes producing the same sound as original bands.
not everyone likes commedian impersonators, so I suppose not everyone likes tribute bands.

Bon jovi played with the tribute band Bon Jovi experience.
We saw these in my Town 5 years ago they were great!

I LOVE comedians and good impersonators. And satire and parody. And I would call a band like Dread Zeppelin a band that falls into that category.
I think our definition of tribute band differs though.
I would definitely call a band that tries to look, sound and act like the original is a tribute band, like the Queen and Abba posts, and I can appreciate their talent, but still don't see the point. Why listen to them when I can still listen to the original? And as Steve J pointed out, if they have that much talent, why not put it to making it as original bands instead of copying?

On the other hand a band like Dread Zeppelin IS different than a tribute band, they aren't copying, but instead adding their own twist to it. By the way, I've listened to them since their IRS years.

In that vein, here is one of my favorites:

See Kim you either like or dislike...I do see the point of them. not everyone can afford to see the real thing. As Freddie has passed away, other Freddie`s have kept the music going, etc, etc.

i had a conversation with one guitarist / vocalist of a tribute band. He was a session musician who has played with the great bands,/ artists. He is as good as any artist i have seen on stage, amazing guitar player. He told me there are hundreds of bands in every town, city trying to make a living full time. Do you know what it is not easy, at least this job gave him full time work, cruise ships and other venues that pay higher than the blues band he used to belong to. after all every band plays well known tunes from famous bands mostly. Most of them have written there own music, but very few bands make it.
At the end of the day we speak as we find.

'Dread' Zeppelin - at least the name is fitting. And I guess they are at least a little original, I mean who would think of marrying Elvis and Plant?

And I just plain don't know what to say about KimW's and my tribute band...really don't

No disrespect to you Steve, or Kim either.

At least somone gets my humor.

As Johnny Carson used to say, you're a "cult of one".

Now we just have to decide which one is Statler and which one is Waldorf.

PS Terra...This kind of reminds me of a thread I started a while back called something like "The world's greatest drummer" and I posted a video of Animal from the Muppets.

Everyone started posting their own real favorite drummers, missing the humor. LOL

Well, I can't help it, I thought it was hilarious!

I mean Kim and Steve dissing all of the tribute band acts like a couple of grumpy old men, it was perfect.

I love the Muppets too...It was one of the shows that was truly funny for both kids and adults.

PS...I'm still trying to figure out which one is Statler and which one is Waldorf.

Hmmm, based on his posts, I'm going to go with Steve as Statler and Kim by default then, would be Waldorf even though he refers to himself as a grumpy old man.

You know I love ya, right Kim?

As for the Muppets, yeah, I used to watch them with my mom. She was the one who wouldn't let anyone watch anything else during that time slot, lol!

As for me, I've always loved Kermit. I used to collect frogs when I was a kid and Kermit was the ultimate frog.

    Check out Battery. disasterarea.org

Metallica started showing up at their shows back in the early 90's. Later they took them on tour with them. A very unique tour. Metallica covered bands that they followed when they were younger and Battery played the only Metallica tunes on that tour. Read the stories from that tour on the scroller on the bottom of the site. The site is in hard shape and is being replaced soon but the info is all there.

Check out the Guitar Magazine story and when they went to prison in New Hampshire because of a pyro accident and other adventures. They are still playing. I think you could find some of their stuff on YouTube.

And just to irriate our own Statler and Waldorf a little more...Here's a video I put together for one of my best friends. He books Las Vegas talent and showgirls.

This is Shane Paterson, an Elvis tribute artist and one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet, with some Las Vegas showgirls.

BTW, I didn't shoot the video, only put it together.

        Hey Kim,
I thought I would put this in...there was a guy Mickey Gee, he played around the pub circuits.
We were talking to him between sets in a local a few years ago. He hates i know tribute bands, any brass instruments, etc. But I recall him playing a chuck berry number, `Let in rock`
His guitar playing was just like Chuck, and he manged to put on an american accent when he sang LOL, great stuff all the same.

Here he is Mickey Gee playing with Dave Edmunds and Andy Fairwater low.

Sadly he died about three years ago too young. He played with the best but did not make big time long enough.

Amazingly he could play any style guitar, including classical.

Just found these guys on YouTube.

It's amazing that they do in one take what the Beatles and George Martin probably took a week to do. (Mind you, to be fair, they had to work out all the chords and harmonies - these guys had it all on a plate)

Even Kim would appreciate the musicianship
I would put them in the same class as Bjorn Again, and for me that's saying something!
