My Pet Peeve with Recent WSOs - Not What You Might Think!

First, a confession. I have averaged over one WSO purchase a day over the last year, and have a background as a programmer. These two "facts?" definitely qualify me to ask that this simple practice, below, be fixed.

Many WSOs have multiple downloads, such as many videos. One, several months ago, had over 60 individual downloads possible.

Here's the pet peeve: why do some of these WSOs give you no choice of download location, but force all the downloads to go to the default download location of the C: drive?

Then I need to "cut & paste" these files to the final location, which actually and usually is an external USB-based drive. If the downloads all finish at about the same time, this is not much of a problem, but still is more than an annoyance (dare I say thoughtlessness on the part of the WSO creator)?

From my programming background, I know that it is a simple matter to use either some HTML code or simply cut and paste some simple PHP code to the download page. I know, I've done it many times. Just Google this - the code is easy to find.

However, there may be more to this than meets the eye. The last two "offenders" that I remember were both using Amazon S3 as their download source. Is this somehow different? I did not have the time (or the patience at that moment) to view the page source to try to find out if anything unusual was happening with the Amazon S3 service.

BTW, I'm running Windows 7 64 bit (if this turns out to be relative to what is happening with some of these downloads).

I think there's "less to it" than meets the eye - sellers who give no thought to download efficiency. They have a product or videos and seem to think "more is better" when it comes to downloads.

I'm still trying to grasp buying one WSO a day for a year I buy perhaps one every month or two...and sometimes none for months at a time.

Kay, thanks for the response. With so much going on in the Warrior forum, I wasn't sure that my post would get any replies.

Perhaps it is just that simple - no thought given to the process. To paraphrase a famous line: "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the public!". While I'm not actually that cynical, it often seems necessary to do or say something cynical to drive home the point.

On a related matter, I recently bought a WSO which promised a new traffic source. Everything was good and accurate, to a point - got everything set up as shown in the videos. But once it was all set up, I was left entirely on my own. In truth, I got exactly half a WSO. I contacted the seller on Skype and each time, he said wait, things will move. They haven't in two weeks.

Worse, as I was doing this on that weekend, everything seemed so good that I sent an email to my list of ~1250 subscribers. I promised an update, which I haven't done yet. It won't be an update, it will probably be a confession.

So much for quality control of WSOs! I will probably have to recommend to my list that they stay away from any purchases from that warrior. I'm dreading sending him an "ultimatum" on Skype, but since I'm essentially free of fear, I will eventually be doing it.

Jim, YOU control where your downloads go, through your browser preferences. The actual HTML of the 'download' page has no control whatsoever as to where the file ends up on your computer.

So much for quality control of WSOs!

There are no quality control claims made that I've seen. An offer must meet the requirements of products that can be offered as WSOs - but no one is vetting the products.

I got exactly half a WSO.

Maybe he's saying to wait for the next WSO - which is part 2?

Thats what I thought too. You control where you save from your browser (client browser). On mozzila firefox, its under tools >> options >> click the general tab and choose "Always ask me where to save this files". in your case you probably chose the option "Save files to [C:]"

Steve, I thought so too. If I recall correctly, the links in question would not respond to any form of right-click - so no context menu appeared. I had to left-click on the link and then it downloaded directly to the C: "downloads" directory.

Any comments?

It IS hard to find them though, because of the flaw. You have to close each modal, and try to right click after each. When you can right click, the previous item was an offender.

BTW to those reading. There ARE ways to copy the site, even WITH that code. You only hurt the honest people.

A second thought, Steve.

At times I have had some problems due having too many copies of Chrome open! During those times, I have also used Mozilla and IE. Perhaps these have different browser preferences - but I had never noticed this behaviour in these browsers previously.

The only common denominators I recall were: 1. WSOs; 2. large files being downloaded from Amazon S3.

For Chrome, click on the Customize wrench icon at the top right, then go to the Under the Hood tab. About halfway down you'll see the "Downloads" section. For IE - I don't know. I looked but I didn't see the option out in plain site. I'm sure you can find the info on how to change it out on the web somewhere.

If you sent the preferences right, you won't have to right-click to get the context menu.

I don't know why some people try to disable right-clicking. Not only is it a waste of time, it's a bad user experience.

I like to break my long downloads into reasonable packs and give the purchaser a place( members area )where he/she can download the remaining parts of the package at their leisure.

That makes sense but many of the sellers of WSO give no thought to that. Of course you can choose WHERE to put the download - but my stomach drops when I buy a WSO and I'm presented with about 3 dozen things to download one at a time.

Bundle them up - reduce the number of downloads. If a download is going to take a few minutes, that's fine - I'll do something else. Sitting here downloading one small file after another is time wasted.

The devil is in the details and many sellers seem to miss easy details. They put you on a mailing list when you buy - but you get emails from a totally different name than you purchased from. You buy from one person and get a thank you email (and list signup) from another person. Very few WSO sellers these days seem to go through their own sales/buying/delivery process before launching it.

I truly appreciate it when I buy a product where the download or installation process is seamless....because so many are glitchy.

  Back many moons ago a single .zip file download was a good ideal.
  
  Today, with videos and the large file sizes it's not practical to load 37 videos,
  24 reports, 87 templates and 50 .pdfs into only one .zip file. The time it would take to
  download the package alone would be a problem. You could loose an Internet
  connection and have to start over when your are 98% complete!

  This accomplishes three things. One, it allows the customer to download and review
  part of the package verses spending a massive amount of time downloading the full

  Three, It allows the customer to return and download the info as needed while
  giving them a back up incase their system fails.

I just right click, and put them in a set location. It is RARE that they FORCE the location. I think the only way to do that is to have a special utility do it. It's possible that NOBODY here does that though. But putting them in one zipped package is preferable.

What you are describing is not a WSO....it should be a $1997 Product Launch, when you need someone to help handle that for you I( know just the guy!

I have always said to have a <=10MB option. Still, that allows a zip to have up to 100MB files.

Others addressed the "save" issue so I won't go into that other than to say they are right, you control where your downloads go.

If you end up having to email your list with a "confession" try to turn it into an opportunity. I'm not sure what the confession would be, but see if there's a way to get them to band together with you to help each other overcome whatever the problem is. It could solidify you with them even more, especially if you find success together.

Just a thought . . . problems can often be turned into opportunities if we look a them differently.

Thanks for the comment Dennis - it makes me look at things differently.

I had been waiting over a week to see signs of traffic. When I got one single click, suddenly a whole "bunch" of things fell into place. So I emailed my list with what I had learned. I will be experimenting with it over the next few weeks when I have time, to try to see how I can use it effectively for traffic - then share that with the list.

But, based on what you said, I'm also going to see if there are people on the list willing to work as a group to learn how to use the traffic source effectively - thanks for the perspective!

To answer your OP, nobody can make you save a file in a particular location other than yourself, so I suggest you have a look at your browser preferences and see what the current settings are for saving files.
