As I understand it, a muslim teenager wanted a job. I don't know WHY she applied, but she applied for a job she said she couldn't do, because HER RELIGION FORBIDS IT!

So WHAT HAPPENED? They asked for people having the offending items to not use that line!

Islamization of the Workplace: Wegman's Adheres to Sharia, Halal Checkout Line for Muslim Cashier - Atlas Shrugs

UNREAL!

BTW Christians have had the same problems. They either handle it, or apply elsewhere.
Jewish people have had the same problems. They either handle it, or apply elsewhere.
HECK, the US military has found that some WON'T tolerate killing, so they have been EXEMPTED!

Funny story I once heard. A VERY rich guy, that OWNED a huge advertising company, worked a little too late one friday. He was stuck there through saturday! WHY? Because he was jewish, and it is not allowed to activate electricity, etc... between friday at sundown, and saturday at sundown. So he couldn't operate the elevator, or the car.

It's really simple - you move here, you adapt, or you move back to where you came from. Try moving to a muslim country and asking them to adapt to ANYTHING from the American culture. Not going to happen.

So they didn't have a staircase? I've never heard of a building without a staircase. I sure wouldn't work in one - electric goes out, fire starts and you are a crispy critter.

As far as setting up special for the woman obeying Sharia law - Sharia isn't a religion, it's a political system. This is America. If she wants to be held to sharia law - she needs to go where the country is run on sharia law. She just opened the way for anyone of any religion to walk into that office, make demands to suit their religious beliefs and sue the snot out of the company for discrimination if they do not do so. Sometimes being nice about things is not the smartest way to go.

It WAS a TALL building! If memory serves, it was 40 floors, though it might have been taller. Maybe he didn't want to have a problem with light or something. He was a customer, and my boss told me the story. BTW Such people typically leave before sunset. He slipped up. 8-(

As for sharia? I have been hearing more that it is tied to the religion. Jewish people have the same sort of thing. They aren't supposed to deal with unclean animals, such as pigs, and sometimes aren't even allowed around YEAST! Of course, there are upwards of 5 types of jewish people. Some see it as an old culture, some reform, and even some conservative, don't really care. Maybe even some orthodox don't. ultraorthodox probably do. I believe the man in question was conservative.

I know it sounds odd, but there is a phrase in the bible that says you should not start a fire on the sabbath, and they have taken that to mean that you can't even flip a switch. it is like the phrase that says you should not boil a goat in it's mothers milk, so they don't mix meat or cheese. Again, adherence varies.

What I think doesn't matter. It's in New York - the store owner doesn't mind and the customers say they have no problem with it.

This is one of those cases where I'm not an owner or a worker there - and I don't shop there - so not up to me to pass judgment.

Yeah, it's just the idea. Eventually, it will get worse. The US isn't the first place this has been.

Of course, I just wanted to let people know.

I have noticed that Kay has a disposition of "allowing" others their experience, and thats a form of humbleness. I still felt it was important to post though because I for one got something valuable out of it. Thanks Steve.

I'm all for allowing. Other places would allow it. The clerk is NOT allowing the store to use that lane for those that have pork or alcoholic beverages while she is there.

And I said NOTHING against kay.

I wasnt thinking you said anything against Kay in the slightest. I was just noting something I have noticed about her....and I do agree thats pretty crazy of that store.

Yeah, it isn't like there is a lack of stores.

For those that don't know, the US is actually VERY diverse! There are LOTS of pockets, and some ARE nice areas, where different cultures can live virtually UNAFFECTED! HECK, I didn't know what to think about a musician named Laurence Welk. I thought he had sort of an odd way of speaking, but figured he was American. He was born in North Dakota, in the USA. His first language was that of his community, GERMAN! Heck, I had some relatives that had a lot of german speaking neighbors they could speak german with, in wisconsin. My Japanese aunt came here and lived in a nice area in Long Beach, CA, ALSO in the US. She was slow to learn english, because she could communicate fine with others there in Japanese. And in the main areas, there are various markets that cater to sub groups. The main areas are simply more homogeneous, They tend to be english speaking and less ornate, but generally don't cater just to sub groups. Germans, Japanese, Russians, Jewish, Moslems, etc.... might go there as well, but a butcher will likely have pork, and they might sell alcoholic beverages.

Of course, there are specialty stores THERE too. I stayed at one hotel, in a generally English speaking area, and the only grocery store I found within 5 miles was a korean one. It was nice, and luckily must stuff was obvious, but it was in korean, and they sold items that were definitely NOT something the average American would eat.

If all 3 religions could just get the point:

    (just read this today)

'Beware of making a fetish of your consistency to your convictions instead of being devoted to God...

It is easier to be a fanatic than a faithful soul, because there is something amazingly humbling, particularly to our religious conceit, in being loyal to God."

How deeply profound and meaningful. Jesus ate with the people that others considered sinners and taboo, because he understood that the greater sin was to make others feel less deserving, he was devoted to God and not religion.

This is the best most profound post I have read all week, Im so glad I stopped into the basement this eve.

      Thanks GF!

This strikes me because I am sometimes more devoted to following God than at other times, and in the times when I am, I naturally become more humble, in a way that feels right... (Quick somebody throw a bible at him! His head needs to shrink now we know the secret! lol)

Its not even about a bible or religion to me...Patrician really brought it down to its true essence for me here.

When Im not following God or feeding my spirit I can get fairly, I wouldnt say "arrogant" but some would call it that, and I will use it for lack of a better word. The actual word I want to use is "unbalanced", or "out of harmony".

John - I am so glad you 'grok' Chambers (1874-1917). I am reading his book ('My Utmost for His Highest') for about the 5th time because he just blows my mind. Let me give you the whole 'day' that is associated with this because it speaks to your comments about the two excerpts and is still relevant to fudamentalist fanaticism and legalism.

    Discovering Divine Designs

"I being in the way, the Lord led me..." (Genesis 24:27)

We have to be so one with God that we do not continually need to ask for guidance. Sanctification means that we are made the children of God, and the natural life of a child is obedience - until he wishes to be disobedient, then instantly there is the intuitive jar.

In the spiritual domain the intuitive jar is the monition of the Spirit of God. When He gives the check, we have to stop at once and be renewed in the spirit of our mind in order to make out what God's will is.

If we are born again of the Spirit of God, it is the abortion of piety to ask God to guide us here and there. "The Lord led me," and on looking back we see the presence of an amazing design, which if we are born of God, we will credit to God.

We can all see God in exceptional things, but it requires the culture of spiritual discipline to see God in every detail. Never allow that the haphazard is anyting less than God's appointed order, and be ready to discover the Divine designs anywhere.

Beware of making a fetish of consistency to your convictions instead of being devoted to God. I shall never do that -- in all probability you will have to, if you are a saint. There never was a more inconsistent Being on this earth than our Lord, but He was never inconsistent to His Father.

The one consistency of the saint is not to a principle but to the Divine life. It is the Divine life which continually makes more and more discoveries about the Divine mind. It is easier to be a fanatic than a faithful soul, because there is something amazingly humbling, particularly to our religious conceit, in being loyal to God."

    Oswald Chambers

the whole PC thing increases the pressure on the employers and makes some people to think that they have the right to dictate terms on their bosses because of some consideration or other. I can understand that if the employee provides a unique service to the company and is really good specialist in his/her field, but not if it is just one of the many faceless employees
