Surfing Internet sometimes makes me dizzy when I see the really weird stuff some people believe. I mean aliens planning to take over the world, odd global conspiracies instigated by ideologically opposed entities joining forces (eg corporate leaders joined with North Korea), dark forces that have been running humanity since prehistorical times (even before Ancient Egyptian civilization), and a vast messy hodgpodge of hogwash.

Well that just about sums up the most of the internet .... and humanity

Its hard not to lose faith in people sometimes, especially if you
take a moment and listen to what they really believe.

    Don't forget these:

    - The earth is hollow and entire civilizations live underground.
    - There are alien bases on on the dark side of the moon (where they can hide from us).
    - Aliens created mankind.
    - Elvis, Hitler, Jimmy Hoffa, etc. are all still alive.
    - The earth is flat (yes, people still believe that).
    - Redheads are all offsprings of aliens.
    - Many of the world leaders are alien shapeshifters.
    - ...or lizard people.
    - NASA faked the moon landings.
    - Paul McCartney is dead. A body double has taken his place.

I'm sure there are many others that didn't pop into my head.

That's people confusing their hollow heads with the earth.

      - There are alien bases on on the dark side of the moon (where they can hide from us).
So that's what Pink Floyd was all about.

      - Aliens created mankind.
I suspect a lot of women would agree with that (including some of my past girlfriends and maybe my wife).

      - Elvis, Hitler, Jimmy Hoffa, etc. are all still alive.
Well, duh? Why else are they still appearing in movies?

      - The earth is flat (yes, people still believe that).
People on the prairies believe that but people who live in mountainous regions believe the world is very bumpy and steep.[/QUOTE]

      - Redheads are all offsprings of aliens.

      - Many of the world leaders are alien shapeshifters.
That would explain why their stated beliefs and opinions change so much.

      - ...or lizard people.
Right. I once came across a pamphlet about that. I had to read it twice, it was so incoherent, but despite my earnest effort it didn't enhance my life even slightly.

      - NASA faked the moon landings.

      - Paul McCartney is dead. A body double has taken his place.

Here's a closely related question and topic. I think it actually pops up here from time to time. Is reality objective or subjective? In other words, is reality a measurable constant or is it malleable according to one's beliefs?

I think the results people get in life are directly related to what they believe even if what they believe isn't accurate. That would point to reality being at least somewhat subjective.

Here's an example. Say there are four people standing on four different corners of an intersection and they witness a car accident. You'd have four very different accounts of that event. Would they all be wrong? How do you sort this kinda stuff out?

I think reality (including "really weird" stuff) is largely subjective. What say ye?

BTW, I've always thought it was common knowledge that redheads were alien spawn.

I would say there is an objective reality, but that our perception of it is subjective. Our perception of reality is influenced by our beliefs, experiences, physical and mental health, emotions, psychological programming, attitude, habits, desires, and other many factors.

So you take 4 people - two feel that the reality is that the earth is flat. The other two think the reality is that the earth is round. It can't be both. There is an objective reality. Our perceptions basically just dictate how we react to it.

That is because their reality is not necessarily a fact - it is only a perceived as a fact.

How does it come to be a fact?

Barring blindness and color blindness we're wired so we all agree to recognize the color yellow when we see it. But what if every last individual on the planet was seeing something different and just recognizes it as yellow? Would that be objective or subjective?

Well, who got to decide it WAS yellow? Who got to name yellow 'yellow'? That was certainly subjective...

And 'what about 'orange'? That guy was a freak! (he just wanted to come up with a word that wouldn't rhyme! :p)

If this were the 5th century, you'd be saying the same thing about the dudes who'd think "What if the world is round?". I mean, of course, let's not go as far as making religions and altering our lives for some ideas that are a bit (or a lot) out there, but let's not forget that humanity has gone through numerous radical shifts in knowledge. And that the greatest discoveries came from apparent nuts.

P.S. Dennis, you forgot Michael Jackson. He's in a jamming session with Elvis and Bob Marley as we speak.

He was included in the "etc." part. That's easier than making an exhaustive list. I'm into easy.

Our conversation always went like this.
        Him "Are you sure?"
Me "Only a fool is sure of himself, Chris."
        Him "So you are sure."
Me "Yes I am, but I'm probably not right."

The name sounded familiar, but maybe you've mentioned his name before here in the WF. I can't say I knew anything about him until watching that video. I didn't read the article. My eyes like more contrast than that gray text offers, and everything in italics is just an added nuisance.

To me, none of these things are any weirder than the picture of reality painted by the mass media. On what basis is this more believable? I don't believe every conspiracy theory -how could I, as many of them contradict each other? But I certainly don't believe that the mainstream view of things is real.

I'm quite familiar with Benjamin Fulford, but that blog from the so-called Former White Hat Operative is known to be either a hoax or a satire. It's written by someone who's either trying to discredit these alternative theories or who is just having fun parodying them.
